Chapter 10 - 10.Royal Reckoning

The sun had just begun to set, casting long shadows over the forest as Akira and his team returned to their base. The victory over the dragon had come at a great cost, leaving Akira physically and mentally drained. Despite his exhaustion, there was no time for rest. The kingdom's next move could come at any moment, and they needed to be prepared.

The base was bustling with activity as operatives tended to the wounded, reinforced defenses, and prepared for the next battle. Akira moved through the chaos with Maya and Rylan by his side, his steps heavy with fatigue.

"Akira, you need to rest," Maya urged, her voice filled with concern. "You've pushed yourself too hard."

"There's no time," Akira replied, his voice low and strained. "We need to stay vigilant."

Before Maya could argue further, a scout rushed into the room, his face pale. "Shadow Phantom, we've captured a high-ranking prisoner. A prince from the kingdom and his wife, a princess. They were found trying to sneak into our territory."

Akira's eyes narrowed. "Bring them to me."

The scout nodded and hurried away. Moments later, two figures were led into the room. The first was a young man with an air of arrogance and entitlement, his eyes filled with defiance. The second was a woman with a calm, composed demeanor, her hand resting on the hilt of a sword at her side.

Akira stepped forward, his exhaustion replaced by a cold determination. "Who are you, and why are you here?"

The young man sneered. "I am Prince Edwin, and this is my wife, Princess Elara. I've come to end this rebellion and defeat the infamous Shadow Phantom myself."

A murmur of disbelief rippled through the room. Akira's eyes narrowed further, his patience wearing thin. "You have no idea what you're dealing with, boy."

Prince Edwin laughed, a sound filled with arrogance. "You think you can scare me? I'm a prince! I've been trained to fight since birth. You're nothing but a coward hiding in the shadows."

Akira's expression hardened. He was too tired to care about the prince's bravado. "I'm giving you one chance to leave and never return."

Edwin drew his sword, pointing it at Akira. "I don't need your permission. I'll defeat you and end this rebellion."

Before Akira could respond, Edwin lunged at him, his movements wild and uncoordinated. Akira sidestepped easily, his exhaustion giving way to a calm precision. He caught Edwin's wrist, gently but firmly disarming him and sending the sword clattering to the ground.

"You're out of your depth," Akira said evenly.

Edwin stumbled back, his face red with embarrassment and rage. "You'll pay for this!"

With a quick, decisive movement, Akira caught Edwin's shoulder, guiding him to sit down. The room fell silent as the prince sat there, gasping for breath.

"Enough," Akira said, his voice filled with finality. "You're not worth my time."

But before he could turn away, Princess Elara stepped forward, her eyes blazing with determination. "You won't touch him," she said, her voice calm but firm. "I may not agree with my husband's methods, but I won't let you harm him."

Akira met her gaze, respect flickering in his tired eyes. "You're brave to stand up for him, but bravery won't save you here."

Elara drew her sword, her stance confident and practiced. "I'm not afraid of you, Shadow Phantom. I'm a trained warrior, and I will defend my husband."

Akira sighed inwardly, recognizing the determination in her eyes. Despite his exhaustion, he knew he had to face her. "Very well. But know that I don't want to hurt you."

Elara nodded, her grip tightening on her sword. "Let's see if your skills match your reputation."

The two circled each other, the tension in the room palpable. Elara struck first, her movements fluid and precise. Akira parried her attacks, his fatigue making each motion a struggle. Despite his exhaustion, his skills remained unmatched.

Elara was skilled, but Akira's experience and training gave him the edge. He countered her strikes with precision, each movement calculated to disarm and incapacitate without causing unnecessary harm.

As the exchange continued, Akira's fatigue began to show. His movements slowed, and he could feel his strength waning. Elara saw her opportunity and pressed her attack, her strikes coming faster and harder.

In a final, controlled move, Akira stepped back, catching Elara's wrist and gently guiding her sword away. She stumbled back, breathing heavily, but her eyes remained defiant.

"It's over," Akira said, his voice filled with exhaustion.

Elara fell to her knees beside Edwin, her eyes filled with a mixture of defeat and determination. "Do what you must, but know that we fought for what we believed in."

Akira shook his head, his expression softening. "I'm not a monster. I don't harm without reason."

He turned to Maya and Rylan. "Secure them and treat their injuries. They're not our enemies, just misguided."

Maya and Rylan nodded, moving to help Elara and Edwin. Akira watched them, his exhaustion finally catching up to him. He knew the fight was far from over, but for now, they had a moment of respite.

As he turned to leave, Elara called out to him. "Shadow Phantom, you could have harmed us. Why didn't you?"

Akira paused, his back to her. "Because despite everything, I still believe in a future where we don't have to harm to survive."

With that, he walked away, leaving the prince and princess in the care of his operatives. The shadows ahead were filled with uncertainty, but Akira knew he had to remain vigilant. The fight for Eldoria was far from over, and the Shadow Phantom would be ready to face whatever came next.
