Chapter 2 - Divorce

Sasha eyes fell on the wheelchair-bound Dexter.

He was able to move his arms thanks to routine muscle training.

Filled with uneasiness, Sasha sat herself down at the dining table as Amy set up a place for her.

Dexter did not say a word even as Sasha picked up her fork. She could not help but sneak a peek at him, which immediately garnered Dexter's attention.

His eyes were like bottomless black holes that could swallow a person whole.

"Dexter--You remember- me" Sasha stammered anxiously.

Dexter picked up his cup of coffee and leisurely sipped at it. His voice was dull and indifferent as he said, "So, you're my wife."

The color disappeared from Sasha's face, and her mind went blank.

Dexter remained silent. He picked up his cup of coffee and took a sip.

Sasha finished her meal hurriedly, then got up to go get her bag from the room so she could get out of the house.

"Get your documents ready. We'll be divorced soon," Dexter said coldly.

Sasha stopped in her tracks, but she was not surprised. Her heart tightened and couldn't utter a single word.

His tone was calm as he said those words.

"Why would we get divorced?" Sasha asked as she slowly turned to face Dexter.

Dexter's thin lips parted slightly, and his voice was dull and indifferent as he spoke, "I underestimate you, Sasha."

----

Next day, Rosalie made her way to Dexter's mansion.

"How's your health, Dexter? What did the doctor say? When will you be able to stand up again?" Rosalie chirped in high spirits as she smiled gently at her son.

"The doctor said I'm recovering quite well," Dexter replied. "There's something I'd like to discuss with you, Mother."

The smile on Rosalie's face died a bit as she said, "Is this about your marriage? I was the one who arranged it. You know Sasha is Mrs. Cooper's daughter and she is a lovely girl."

"We will get divorce tomorrow." Dexter declared.

"Dexter, it's because I know too well exactly what you're thinking that I can't allow you to do this. Sasha is a good girl. It's fine if you don't love her. You just have to stay together, even if you're only husband and wife in name!"

Dexter pursed his lips and did not answer his mother.

"As long as I'm sure, you can't chase Sasha out! Divorce isn't out of the question… You just have to find a girl you like. I will not allow you to spend the rest of your life alone!"

At this point, Rosalie's eyes welled up with tears of agony. She could feel herself running out of breath as she said those last words.

Dexter did not expect his mother to be so stubborn. He also did not expect her to be so furious.

-----

In the guest room, Sasha held her knees in her arms as tears quietly streamed down her face. She heard everything that was happening outside the room.

Dexter did not say much, but he still managed to provoke his mother to the point of fainting.

She sobbed until she fell into a deep slumber.

Crack!

The crisp sound of shattering porcelain broke the silence of the night, making her suddenly open her eyes and wake up from her nightmare about something that had happened a half year ago.

Her father was admitted into hospital when his company went under. Her stepmother, Lily Cooper, turned on Sasha and forced her to marry into the Foster family so she could reap the benefits. She had made it sound like the marriage was for the good of the Cooper family, but Sasha knew that this was Lily's way of getting rid of her! What was least expected, was the fact that her groom was Dexter Foster, her first love.

"Daniel, get your ass over here now!" A man's cold and angry voice was heard from a large bed in the middle of the bedroom.

Sasha shuddered and turned on the light, and then got off the bed and walked quickly to the bedroom.

Under the warm lamplight, Dexter was lying on the bed, eyes opened wide, shining like stars. The blanket only covered his legs and waist. He was wearing a pair of purplish blue silk pajamas, with the few buttons in the chest area left undone.

Beside the bed, a purple clay cup was broken in two. It was most likely the source of the noise that woke Sasha up just now.

"What are you doing here?" Dexter snapped.

"I'm sorry." Sasha apologized in a low voice and turned quickly.

"Stop!" Dexter said icily.

Sasha involuntary stop her tracks and turned slowly.

Dexter pressed his thin lips together. A moment later, he said, "Go and call Daniel."

Sasha hesitated for a few seconds then suggested, "Dexter, How about I...."

"Do I need to say this again? Go and call Daniel." Dexter stared at her coldly with an extremely impatient look in his face.
