In a moving RV.
Carl sat in his seat, shivering around a sheet.
Lori glared at Carl unhappily, then hugged Carl into her arms again.
"I told you not to take a cold shower, but you insisted on taking one. I wonder what you'll do if you catch a cold."
"But I haven't showered for days. I can't just keep not showering."
"I can boil some water for you."
"Mom, this is a waste of time, and it's everyone's time that's wasted. I'll just take it easy for a while."
"But Sofia takes a bath with hot water." Lori felt a little unbalanced. They were all children. Why could others take a bath with hot water while her own child had to suffer the cold?
"She's a girl, and besides, you guys were doing laundry at that time, so you didn't waste time. It would be too late for me to boil water."
"You, you." Lori pinched Carl's nose unhappily, "You are so young and you want to imitate others to be a hero."
Carl smiled without saying anything, looking out the window. Autumn had already arrived unknowingly, and the leaves of the oak trees on both sides of the road had begun to turn yellow.
In a month or two, you'll be able to see oak leaves covering the roads.
Compared to the romance of sycamore leaves, oak leaves are more resolute, darker in color and harder.
Since ancient times, autumn has been a sad and lonely season.
Karl suddenly understood this somewhat distant ancient poem.
If there weren't those zombies on the road, the scene outside the window would have been a beautiful one.
The RV continued to move, and after a while Carl felt much better and not so cold anymore. He wanted to take off the bed sheet, but Lori didn't allow him to.
There was no choice but to continue putting on the blanket. Soon, the RV returned to the fork in the road.
Passing the fork and heading towards Hershel's farm from the other direction, Carl smiled slightly thinking of his previous conversation with Sean. I think so.
Not long after the RV started driving, the view suddenly became clear. The road changed from an asphalt road to a dirt road, and the dense oak trees on both sides turned into lush grass.
In front of us, a wire fence came into view, and in the distance, there was a house.
That's right, Hershel's farm is right in front of us. It seems so familiar to Carl, yet also a little strange.
The armored vehicle stopped in front of the wire fence first, and the RV stopped shortly after. Sean hesitated for a moment, then got out of the car with the pistol and dagger he carried with him.
The door of the RV opened and everyone got out impatiently.
The people on the farm also heard the noise, and Otis was the first to walk out of the house with a shotgun.
Then he looked at the people outside the wire fence in shock.
Then, other people came out, and Karl was a little stunned when he saw the people in front of the house.
Familiar yet strange, the most familiar stranger, this title couldn't be more appropriate.
Hershel, the old farmer, is a kind-hearted and wise man.
Maggie, Beth, is so beautiful, and so is that fat guy, Otis, who accidentally hurt her.
Of course, there is another person, Jimmy, the extra boy Jimmy, Beth's current boyfriend.
Everyone on both sides was stunned for a while. After a while, Hershel asked his two daughters to go back to the room, and he took Otis and Jimmy and slowly walked to a place not far from Carl and his group.
"Who are you?" Hershel was alert.
He couldn't help but be alert, but Hershel had to come over. There were more people on the opposite side than him, and there was also an armored vehicle, which could not be stopped by a wire fence alone.
"We are just some survivors who want to find a safe place to live," said Sean.
"There are many safe places, but you are not welcome here." Hershel said lightly, while raising his own vigilance.
Sean looked at Carl, and Carl smiled and took a step forward. Perhaps because Carl was a child, Hershel was not too nervous.
Carl smiled kindly, "Grandpa Hershel, can we talk alone?"
"You're talking to me?" Hershel was a little surprised, but he realized something even more surprising, "Why do you know my name?"
"I'll tell you when we talk, so, can we talk alone?"
"Hey, Carl, what are you doing?" Lori couldn't help but speak out. Although the old man didn't look like a bad person, it was too dangerous for Carl to be alone with him.
"Lori, it's okay, don't get excited, Carl knows his limits." Sean held Lori back.
Lori looked at Sean in surprise, "How can he, a child, know his limits? What are you talking about? Sean, are you hiding something from me?"
Sean nodded helplessly, "I'll tell you when this is over, but now just believe Karl, okay?"
At this time, Hershel finally made a decision, "Boy, do you want to come in?"
Apparently Hershel had not completely let his guard down and was not about to step outside of this wire fence.
"Originally, I should go in to show my sincerity, but I don't want my mother to worry too much, so I hope you can understand." Carl bowed to apologize.
Hershel was stunned for a moment, then smiled, "You're quite interesting, kid. How about we talk here?"
"No." Carl pointed to the side, "We can move to the side, away from other people, and then talk behind the wire fence. I believe you will feel at ease this way."
"Okay, I agree with your proposal."
Carl and Hershel walked in the same direction and stopped when they were about a hundred meters away from the others.
"What do you want to talk about, kid?" Hershel said with a smile.
Perhaps because he thought that with so many children and women in the team, they couldn't be that bad, and the person he was talking to was also a child, Hershel relaxed a lot.
"Please allow me to introduce myself first. My name is Carl Grimes." Carl politely saluted like a gentleman.
"Karl? Nice name. Would you like to introduce yourself? But you already know my name, and from what I can remember, I don't seem to know you."
"Of course, I know your name. And not only do I know your name, I also know a lot of information about you." Carl smiled confidently.
"Oh? Carl? What do you mean?" Hershel was confused.
"Your name is Hershel, you are a veterinarian, and you have two daughters, Maggie and Beth, from your two different wives.
But unfortunately, your two wives... You used to be an alcoholic, but you quit drinking because of the birth of your daughter..."
"Hey, how do you know all this? Have you investigated me? Who are you?" Hershel was shocked beyond words.
Karl smiled and said, "Don't be too nervous, I have no ill intentions. First of all, do you think I can find out your information in such a doomsday situation?
If you think I investigated you before the end of time, why would I investigate you?"
"Then how did you know that?" Hershel knew that what Carl said was true, and this made him even more surprised.
