Damien's mind was racing, but he was unable to come up with anything else.
He shouted back, "Keep running!" his voice hoarse from the strain and the dust. He felt a rush of natural energy that drove him to continue running, and his heart pounded in his chest.
The sound of falling stones and the terrible anxiety that they wouldn't survive overwhelmed every second as the minutes flew by like hours. The tunnel seemed to be closing in, with the ceiling above them splitting beneath the pressure and the walls trembling.
Even though Damien could feel the panic growing in his chest, he forced it down and concentrated on moving forward.
They soon noticed a dim light at the end of the tunnel just when it seemed like they could go no farther and that it would go on forever.
"There!" With an unpolished voice, Damien yelled. "We're nearly there!"
Though too exhausted to respond, Vynira nodded and accelerated her pace.
