Damon watched Jessica, his expression unreadable as he stopped a few feet away from her, waiting for her to say something.
The silence between them stretched out, awkward and thick. Jessica looked down at her hands, suddenly unsure of what to do or say. Her fingers still tingled from the music, but now the vulnerability felt too real. She could feel his eyes on her, searching, but she wasn't ready for whatever conversation might come next.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to interrupt," Damon said after a while, feeling now like an intruder in his home.
Jessica shook her head. "I… I just thought you weren't going to be home tonight."
He nodded, his gaze lingering on the piano. "Plans changed."
"How long have you been standing there?" She asked, and he shrugged.
"Long enough," he said softly, still keeping a respectful distance.
