In the middle of the jungle beside the big pond, there could be seen a man running left and right. Behind him was a big snake about six or seven meters long, pursuing relentlessly. And Yes, it was David who was being chased by mutated water snake like there was no tomorrow.
David was jumping around, dodging the mutated water snake's attacks. While Yuna was staring him with a deadpan look on her face. He could fight it easily as the mutated water snake was just a C rank beast, he was acting scared again. It was not his first time running from monsters. He would sometimes do this when faced speed types monsters to test his agility. It was good to test things out but it was turning into habit now, which annoyed Yuna.
"David," Yuna called loudly, her voice echoing in the forest. "If you don't start fighting the snake within a minute, I throw you into the lake to join the snake family. I mean it." She said, as she was irritated seeing this going on for last ten minutes.
When David heard that, shivers ran through his with fear. David's habits of wasting time by running away from monsters has caused him much problems. He was punished many times by Yuna. But this time David wanted to avoid being punished.
David stop running and turn to face the snake with a determination showing in his eyes. "Show me what you got, snake." He said as he readied himself to block the coming attack from the monster. The snake lunged at David with its full speed, with its mouth open. The snake attack was lethal but David jumped in the air and dodged the attack.
David landed a counterattack kick on the snake, pushing snake few meters away. The snake wasn't affected much because of its tough scales. Snake's eyes burned with rage and it attack David with its tail. The impact was so powerful, David was thrown far away stumbling on ground. He stopped when he collided on a big tree.
"Arhh, son of a_" David cursed in pain. "I really have to get serious." David stood up, ready for round two.
He turned around, only to see three more snakes coming from the water. It seems the got alerted by the noise of their fight. David looked at Yuna, she gave him a knowing nod. Yuna waved her hand and the ice wall appeared around the the lake trapping everything inside. It happened in a matter of second.
Now that the other monsters were trapped, David focused on his fight. He lunged at the snake, he landed a punch in its head. The snake staggered but launched a counterattack with lightning fast speed. David jumped to the left side to avoid getting hit by its tail again. As the snake was off-balance, David launched barrage of punches in the snake's big body.
David didn't let snake to recover, he kept on punching and the snake was wailing in pain. At last He summoned all of his power in his fist, a punched hard leaving a big hole in the snake's body. But it was not enough to kill the snake so David jumped in the and landed a flying crescent kick on it's head. Then the snake lied flat on the ground, unable to move.
Yuna who was on the side said, "It took 10 minutes. Too slow, use your martial arts more." She complained as she opened the small space in her ice wall. Another snake little bigger than the one he fought came out and she closed the ice wall again. "Let's see, how you do with the B rank monster. We are not leaving until you finish fighting all of them." She said with a evil grin in her face.
"Yuna, you are doing it again." He said as he saw her grinning. "Will you at least give me some time to rest between fights." He requested.
"No can do. If I do that, it won't be a training anymore, it will just be hunt." She rejected because she wanted David to grow faster as things were uncertain.
Throughout that whole day, David fought with remaining three snakes. One of them was C rank while other two were B rank. Fighting C rank wasn't hard but B rank was like a death match. If he lost his focus even a little bit, he was dead. Many times Yuna had to interfere to save David in the fight with B rank. David had become a strong than before but he couldn't survive fighting B rank alone.
It took him 3 hours of constant struggle to win against a B rank snake and he died nine times in the process. It can be said dying as he was saved by Yuna that many times in a single fight. And the last one was a disaster, David didn't manage to land even a single blow at it. Seeing David had no hopes of winning, Yuna killed the monster using her 'water bullet' magic spell.
The magic spells are usually used by mages. Centuries ago when the world faced a catastrophe because of dark guilds, the gene evolution had been banned. After that a new practice started with the help of elves.people who were Evolved before the ban, managed to learn magic but others who didn't go through evolution process, couldn't. People with the inferior gene didn't have good luck but people with the advanced gene could grow more.
As most of the people were already evolved, their children didn't need to go through the process because they would born as evolved. It was a huge plus point for humans. Elves shared there magic spell books with humans while humans shared their technologies. It was a win-win for both parties as they both could advance.
When one they David and Yuna went to the market to sell their hunt, they found about the spell book being sold. They were in need of it so they bought it with huge sum of 3 gold. Spell book were rare and mostly owned by powerful families and most influential Royal magic academy. To learn magic normal people have to either buy paying hefty price or participate in entrance trails of the academy to be a student.
After buying the book, Yuna tried to learn other magic spells besides her water and ice but couldn't do it. They then asked Kevin about it and he explained everything. People only could use the magic of their attributes and most people had only one magic attribute. It was very rare to find human who could use more than one type of magic. There were only two genius this year who had more than one attribute in the magic academy.
After understanding about attribute, Yuna read the book. It had only five spells and all basic at that. And there was only water bullet spell that fit her expertise. In the following days as David trained fighting monsters, Yuna refined her spell shooting at long distance targets or trees. David didn't learn it as he was busy with gaining fighting experience and building his muscles.
Back to the present,
When they finished with everything they realized, it was almost 8 in the evening and they had gotten late to return to the city. They decided to camp rather than doing back and forth. They instructed Teresa to bring the spaceship there. That's right, the spaceship was always their camp when they lost track of time.
Yuna helped David to walk inside the spaceship when it arrived. It wasn't fetal but he was wounded very badly this time. Yuna helped clean his wounds as they sat inside the cockpit. Yuna pulled the health potions they had bought in the market from their magic pouch. David drank the potions and it was already showing effects. It was a low quality product but it was the only thing they could afford after buying a spell book and the magic pouch. Yuna also applied ointment as well on David's wounds for fast recovery.
Same time later, David could walk on his own. As they were talking about what to do next, David's stomach growled. He was hungry and out of energy because of the training. They went to the lobby to prepare dinner. When the food was ready, David eat few plates alone leaving Yuna to make more. He apologized to her for finishing everything alone but Yuna didn't seemed to mind. She just smiled and cooked lot of food like rice curry, meat.
After enjoying a hot meal, they went to their quarters to rest. Next morning, after having breakfast, both of them stepped out of the spaceship. David's wounds were all healed, he looked more energetic. Now they wanted to find few preys that would sell for a good price so they moved forward searching monsters.
As they were walking, Yuna had a thought. David fighting monsters head on for trainings was not that effective and also wounded him. She thought if he could use the magic, the possibility was endless. She stopped walking and pulled the spell book from the magic pouch.
"David. I think, you should try practicing magic to see if you can use it." Yuna said giving the spell book to David.
"Alright. But how do I do it. Should I just read the spell like in the novels?" David asked excited and nervous at the same time. He was worried that he couldn't use magic.
"Reading the spell is important but you have to feel the sensation when you read the spell. If you managed to grasp it, you don't have to chant the spell, just like me." She placed her hand on his shoulder and said, "Go ahead, relax yourself and try to feel the mana in the air."
David opened the book, the first spell was basic fireballs spell. He read the instructions and closed his eyes. He stretched one of his hand forward and focused, trying to sense mana in nature. A minute later, his mind went in a trance and his heart became still as water. He could feel stream of warm and peaceful flow of mana. He realized this was the right moment and said out loud the spell.
"Fire ball."
