Wang Jianguo's home was located at the base of Rock, with two daughters, both of school-going age.

Through a loan, Wang Jianguo bought a second-hand niche-brand car from the used car market. He would rise early and return home late, shuttling back and forth between the suburbs and the city center to pick up passengers—what's commonly known as "driving a black cab."

Without a business license, and without company management, the money he earned, after deducting fuel and maintenance costs, was still the main source of income for his family.
