As one of the largest law enforcement agencies in the world, the FBI falls under the United States Department of Justice and wields tremendous power within America.
Compared to the global rabble-rousing CIA, the FBI is more akin to a combination of the National Security Agency and the Ministry of Public Security, functioning as a direct administrative department. It has certain counter-espionage capabilities while also exercising law enforcement power within America.
Of course, just as American movies and TV shows depict, the FBI also participates in criminal investigations. This includes enforcing laws against drug trafficking, smuggling, and to some extent, regulatory powers.
