"Please come in," the maid Aiko beckoned her, then opened the door. The bedroom was spacious, with the bed draped in light gauze looking a bit cozy in the gentle night breeze.
"Thank you, you can go rest as well, no need to stand guard outside tonight," she said.
"Yes, Miss," Aiko curtsied and then withdrew.
She really was obedient. The girl had thought that the maid might demur, but it seemed she had been overthinking things.
In the night, the hazy moonlight filtered through the glass window, spilling into the room, Hexia slept somewhat sweetly, no longer waking intermittently as she used to. Perhaps she hadn't realized that she seldom dreamt about her sister and mother anymore. Maybe it was only now that she truly let go of those grey memories, gradually emerging from that dark house to reveal her own colors.
The next day, the girl awoke to birdsong and morning light.
Still feeling a bit sleepy, she didn't want to get out of bed, Hexia thought as she lay there.
