Chapter 3 - -3-

The clock read 8:30 AM as James stepped into the office, the buzz of early morning activity already filling the air. The city outside was bathed in the soft glow of the rising sun, casting long shadows across the streets. James took a deep breath, trying to shake off the lingering effects of a restless night.

As he walked through the office, he noticed Alexa at her desk, her demeanor markedly different from the night before. She was the picture of professionalism, her posture straight, her expression composed. It was as if a switch had been flipped, transforming her into someone he barely recognized.

"Good morning, Mr. James," Alexa greeted him, her tone formal and distant.

"Morning, Alexa," James replied, playing along with the charade. He understood the need for boundaries, especially in a professional setting, but it still stung a little to see her so guarded.

He made his way to his office, the door closing with a soft click behind him. Sitting at his desk, James powered up his computer, his mind already racing with the tasks ahead. The familiar hum of the machine filled the room as he navigated through his emails and project files.

But his focus wavered as a news article caught his eye. It was a feature on the most commercial tech company in NYC, now ruled by Edward, the man who had betrayed him and taken over his former company. The headline boasted of their latest success, a cutting-edge technology that had taken the market by storm.

James felt a surge of anger, his fingers clenching into fists as he stared at the screen. The memories of betrayal and loss flooded back, the pain still raw even after all these years. He had worked so hard to rebuild his life, but seeing Edward's face, smug and triumphant, brought it all crashing down.

Alexa knocked softly on his door, her presence a welcome distraction. "James, you have a meeting in ten minutes," she reminded him, her voice gentle but professional.

James nodded, trying to mask his frustration. "Thanks, Alexa. I'll be there."

As she turned to leave, she hesitated, her eyes lingering on him. "Is everything okay, James? You seem... tense."

James forced a smile, shaking his head. "I'm fine, just a lot on my mind."

But Alexa wasn't convinced. She could see the storm brewing behind his calm exterior, the flicker of anger that he tried so hard to hide. "If you need to talk, I'm here," she offered quietly before slipping out of the room.

The meeting was a blur of presentations and discussions, James struggling to keep his mind from wandering back to the article. He participated, nodding at the right moments and offering input when necessary, but his heart wasn't in it.

By the time the workday ended, James was exhausted, both mentally and emotionally. He made his way to the parking garage, the familiar comfort of his car a small solace. As he pulled out onto the street, he noticed Alexa standing at the bus stop, her eyes focused on the horizon.

Impulsively, he pulled over and rolled down the window. "Need a ride?"

Alexa looked surprised but grateful. "Sure, thanks."

She climbed into the passenger seat, the tension between them palpable. James navigated the evening traffic, the silence in the car heavy with unspoken words.

"James, what happened today?" Alexa finally asked, breaking the silence. "You seemed really upset."

James gripped the steering wheel tighter, his knuckles turning white. "It's nothing, Alexa. Just some old issues resurfacing."

Alexa frowned, not satisfied with his vague answer. "You can trust me, you know. Whatever it is, you don't have to face it alone."

James sighed, glancing at her briefly before returning his focus to the road. "It's complicated, Alexa. My past... it's not something I like to talk about."

The car fell silent again, the only sound the hum of the engine and the distant murmur of the city outside. Suddenly, Alexa's phone rang, the sound cutting through the tension like a knife.

"Excuse me," she said, answering the call. "Hi, Mom. Yes, I know. No, I'm not avoiding him, I just... I can't talk about this right now."

James listened, his curiosity piqued. When she hung up, he couldn't help but ask, "Everything okay?"

Alexa sighed, looking out the window. "Just my mom. She keeps pushing me to marry this guy I don't love."

James felt a pang of sympathy. "That sounds tough. Why does she push so hard?"

Alexa hesitated, then looked at him, her eyes filled with a mixture of frustration and sadness. "It's complicated. She thinks it's a good match, for family and business reasons. But I just can't see a future with him."

James nodded, understanding more than she realized. "I'm sorry, Alexa. That sounds really difficult."

She smiled faintly, appreciating his empathy. "Thanks, James. It helps to talk about it."

As they neared Alexa's apartment, James felt a sense of unease. There was something she wasn't telling him, something that seemed to connect their lives in ways he hadn't anticipated. But he didn't press her, respecting her need for privacy.

"Here we are," he said, pulling up to the curb.

"Thanks for the ride, James," Alexa said, her hand lingering on the door handle. "And for listening."

"Anytime, Alexa," James replied, watching her as she got out of the car and walked towards her building.

As he drove away, his mind was a whirlwind of thoughts and emotions. The revelation about Alexa's family pressure, combined with the resurgence of his past grievances, left him feeling more unsettled than ever. There were too many pieces of the puzzle still missing, too many questions left unanswered.

The night air was cool and crisp as James navigated the familiar streets, his thoughts drifting back to the conversation with Alexa. Her vulnerability had struck a chord with him, reminding him of his own struggles and the battles he had fought to regain control of his life.

But there was something else, a nagging feeling that there was more to her story than she had let on. The way she spoke about her mother, the pressure to marry, it all felt too familiar, too close to home.

As he pulled into his apartment's parking garage, James couldn't shake the feeling that their lives were more intertwined than either of them realized. There were too many coincidences, too many connections that couldn't be ignored.

He parked the car and made his way to his apartment, the weight of the day's events pressing down on him. The familiar hum of the city outside was a constant reminder of the challenges he faced, the battles still to be fought.

As he settled into bed, his mind raced with thoughts of Alexa, Edward, and the tangled web of their pasts. There were too many questions left unanswered, too many secrets still hidden in the shadows.

And as he drifted off to sleep, one thought lingered in his mind: their story was far from over. The journey ahead was still uncertain, but with Alexa by his side, James felt ready to face whatever came next.

"To be continued..." he whispered to himself as he drifted off to sleep, a sense of determination settling over him. The pieces of the puzzle were slowly coming together, and he was ready to uncover the truth, no matter what it took.
