Chapter 1 - A Giratinatar

A creature floated in nothingness, as it kept thinking to itself from infinite nothingness. If it was still human, it would call this emotion boredom, but the soul lacked such emotions due to his nonexistent body.

This soul was David. A young man, who had recently died. He was nothing special. This fact pained him infinitely and he spent his entire life trying to remedy it.

Ever since he was young, he had wanted to do everything, experience everything, and see everything! His ambitions were too grand for the world ever since birth! He couldn't remember where this ingrained drive for completeness came from, but from as far back as he could recall, he had yearned to become nothing less than perfect. Yet, he was never allowed to.

In school, he studied as much as he could and achieved perfect graders. He wasn't naturally smart, but what was a bit of talent compared to absolute dedication? He maintained the best grades all the way until high school. Then came his first shortcoming. Calculus didn't click for him, and that was when his perception of perfection shattered. He didn't get a 99% or 99.9%;,he got a 5% score. The third question was something he couldn't solve, and his will broke then.

With a broken will, it didn't matter to him if the rest of the questions could be solved at all. If that question was left unsolved, he would not be what he wanted! David's reasoning was a binary scale, a yes or no, either you're yes 100% the time, or you are not perfect. As soon as it stopped being yes, even for that one rather insignificant thing, he stopped seeing himself as perfect.

In his pursuit of perfection, he failed. His goal was never to be the best or achieve the most, he wished to never fail, something against the very nature of humans and he still hadn't recovered to that moment. He wished to redo the test, to cleanse this blemish, but that small mistake didn't decide his grade, so the teacher didn't allow it. It was then that he gave up.

Who wouldn't? Most people wouldn't, but David wasn't most people. Even when giving up, he searched for the perfect reason to and it came easily to him. He learned, that the human body was fundamentally not even good, much less perfect. Even if he became the perfect human, that would simply mean he would just wait and his perfection will be gone before he hits thirty.

He could no longer be perfect and he realized it was never even achievable. He quit exercising, studying, and barely passed every following exam. Why continue when perfection became unobtainable? The only reason he stayed alive was the hope of one day being able to transfer his consciousness to another body and restart or using gene modification to resurrect his goal, but science never got there. Now, he was just a disembodied voice floating through the void. At least he managed to give a little girl a shot at the perfection he couldn't achieve by saving her before he died.

A booming voice interrupted his thoughts, "What an interesting little soul." David looked back to see a giant mass of tentacles, morphing and changing shape until it settled into the form of his 15-year-old self, the last time he felt complete.

"I want to commend you for saving that little girl. You overcame your very nature and did something good. You've caught my interest, so I will extend a helping hand. Tell me, little soul, what do you desire the most?"

David intended to talk, having nothing better to do, but before he could answer, the younger version of him nodded and said, "Quite ambitious, but impossible. Even if I grant you this wish and send you back, you will never achieve what you seek. How about I make you a different offer? I see you liked many games: Skyrim, Pokémon, Dark Souls, The Binding of Isaac, RimWorld... even Minecraft! That's quite interesting. How about this: I can recreate a world for you. Whichever of these you deem most interesting, I will allow you to reincarnate into. There you can achieve your goal, as such world's have a pinnacle and a quite achievable one."

David's mind lit up. The unachieved goal of perfection in his old world didn't weigh him down for the first time in years. He no longer felt dead and down. Now he would have a new body to achieve perfection with! And would not fail this time. *I wish to be reincarnated in the Pokémon world!* he thought.

The creature nodded and said, "Alright, but do you truly wish to go to such a world? Humans there are weak and not compatible with your goal. I won't grant you aura, as such powers aren't for common men."

David hadn't considered that. *I want to be reborn as a Ditto! With it, I will have several methods to achieve my one true goal!* The humanoid smiled. "That is MUCH more appropriate, but my willingness to help you isn't enough to do such a huge favor. At most, I'll let you choose one Pokémon you have used as a starter in the past. That is as far as I am willing to go."

David pondered this limitation. His best starter Pokémon was a modded Charizard, but Charizard had many weaknesses. Should he choose Chikorita or Greninja? What was a starter Pokémon that was the best... A thought suddenly surfaced within David's mind.

He remembered a specific pokemon version, a version he played... and the start he chose in that version. If he still had a body, his heart would be pounding from adrenaline, as excitement rushed through his soul!

THAT Pokémon was TECHNICALLY a starter for him. It was the first creature he chose in that world and, even though illegal, it was a starter he made... and maybe this would work! Maybe absolute perfection would become possible as well as achieving the peak. *I wish to be reborn as Tyrant, the Giratinatar I used!*

"..."

Silence...

The young creature closed its eyes, as its gentle face looked at David. It opened its left eye... But it wasn't the hazel colour David remembered. The eye was blood red. There were no pupils d the eye suddenly split down the middled.

The eye opened like the eye of Cthulhu, it turned into a mouth and stretched towards david, swallowing his soul whole within a second.

The entity vanished, and David felt a massive headache, as if something extracted his mind to study it and then forcefully threw it back in, as if his body was a rubbish bin and he was a random ball of paper.

Before he could realize what was happening, the white void he was relocated into turned to black. Black tendrils encircled his surroundings, and a planet-sized, gigantic red eye appeared before him. He didn't know what was going on, it all happened too fast, but his soul instinctually knew the answer.

He was directly absorbed into the entity's soul. He was assimilated and the eye was now going to destroy his will and sense of self, fully devouring him and ending his existence. The eye was the core of the entity's soul, while the void was nothing but the sheer power allowed to escape the core.

The red eye split open as the colossal thing began speaking, "YOU DARE TRY SCAMMING ME!" Every word shook David's very being. Just looking at the eye felt like it was slowly destroying him. His mind couldn't function and all he could say was "I...I...I-I-I-I..."

This surprised him to no end!David couldn't speak! He didn't have a body, how could he "hear" himself "speak"? He looked down to see a small humanoid body, as if he was suddenly resurrected. The entity suddenly closed its eye-mouth, and everything returned to how it was a second ago. If not for his soul continuously screaming in fear, he would think that was all just an illusion.

The younger version of David was back, with an angry grin on its face. "I resurrected your body for a second and destroyed it again so I could read your memories! To even THINK about abusing my goodwill! I should have you—"

Even without a body, David felt an icy chill run down his spine as the young version's left eye turned into a red eye-mouth again. And the eye-mouth continued speaking, "—obliterated! Turn you into simple essence and EAT YOU!"

David didn't know why, but this method scared him even more than death. "But I thought of a more interesting punishment!"

He had a bad feeling about this. "I will grant your wish! That is your punishment! Do you like the good news?!"

Alarm bells went off in David's mind as he tried to figure out the creature's intentions, but it simply read his mind again and chuckled. "Hehe. I have a complete grasp of what is fundamentally you! It will be more fun if I explain and watch you squirm! I will modify your genetics and allow you to evolve to a Giratinatar!"

*That's... not as bad as I expected?* David thought. The entity smiled and chuckled, "You will have five evolutions!" David's heart sank when he heard that. "You are realizing, aren't you? Yes, your evolution stages will be Larvitar, Pupitar, Tyranitar, Mega Tyranitar, and the final stage will be Giratinatar. And ALL evolutions will be locked by conditions you are unfamiliar with! I will only tell you the final condition. To become a Giratinatar, you need to slay Giratina itself and wear its skull to fully awaken the bloodline!"

*WHAT?!* David's mind raced. Giratina in the games wasn't special, but the actual Giratina in the Pokémon universe was akin to a god! How could a Tyranitar, a simple mortal creature, fight off a Pokémon god? *I wish for perfection, and such an impossible means is not acceptable. You know what, I give up. I'll just end myself and not play this game!*

The creature frowned. "That would be pleasant to see, but not as enjoyable as watching you infinitely struggle to achieve the unobtainable perfection you seek. I will allow you a single wish, but the scale of said wish will come with a cost!"

David thought of a simple request. *I want a system that can help me keep track of my abilities, like in Pokémon.*

"Hahahaha!" It laughed at David's request... That wasn't a good sign. The creature nodded and its laughter decreased to a chuckle. "I knew you would choose that, so I came up with the BEST price! You will be the ONLY Pokémon in a world of monsters!"

*What does that mean?* David wondered, but the creature smiled and didn't answer. It waved at him, and suddenly, everything went black, as if he no longer had eyes to see the world with.
