Chapter 3 - ALICIA ROBERTS.

Alicia was a strikingly beautiful young woman, her mixed heritage evident in her striking features. With her father's piercing blue eyes and her mother's lush, ebony curls, Alicia was a captivating blend of both her parents' lineages. Her skin, a rich, warm caramel hue, was a testament to the love that had blossomed between her white father, Robert, and her Black mother, Shirley, in a time when such unions were still met with hostility and prejudice.

Despite the challenges they faced, Robert and Shirley had refused to let the disapproval of their families and communities deter them from their love. In the late 1980s, when they first met, the world seemed to be against them, but their bond only grew stronger in the face of adversity. They married in a small, private ceremony, surrounded by only a few close friends who supported their decision to unite their lives.

The birth of their daughter, Alicia, in 1995 was a joyous occasion that filled their hearts with immense pride. Alicia was truly a vision of beauty, inheriting the best features of both her parents. Her father's striking blue eyes, which seemed to peer into one's soul, were accentuated by her mother's lush, voluminous curls that framed her face in a halo of ebony. Alicia's skin, a rich, sun-kissed tone, was a harmonious blend of her parents' contrasting complexions, creating a unique and captivating appearance.

As Alicia grew, she followed in her parents' footsteps, learning the secrets to brewing the perfect cup of coffee and mastering her mother's renowned baking skills. The family's humble café, which they had started in their community, quickly became a beloved gathering place, with locals flocking to indulge in Shirley's delectable pastries and the rich, aromatic brews that Alicia had perfected.

Now, as Alicia's parents were nearing retirement, it only made sense that she would take over the beloved café. However, Alicia had no intention of abandoning her current career, determined to balance her professional aspirations with her desire to uphold her family's culinary legacy. With her boundless energy, her unwavering dedication, and her innate talent, Alicia was poised to ensure that the café continued to thrive, becoming a cherished institution in their community for years to come.

Now, I'm missing a lot of details.

Alicia had always been a driven and ambitious student, excelling from kindergarten all the way through high school. It was widely expected that she would get accepted into a prestigious university, perhaps even Harvard or another top engineering program in the country. Engineering had been her passion, and the plan was for her to pursue a degree in that field.

However, Alicia's plans took an unexpected turn when her mother fell ill. Her mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and Alicia made the selfless decision to put her own academic aspirations on hold in order to be there for her family during this difficult time. Rather than applying to colleges, Alicia chose to stay home and care for her ailing mother for nearly two years.

"Baby, you don't have to quit because of me," her mother had said to her, visibly concerned that Alicia was sacrificing her own dreams.

"I'm not quitting, mum. I would just rather teach," Alicia responded calmly as she folded her mother's laundry. "I know how much you loved engineering and how your eyes would light up when you talked about it. I don't want you to give that up," her mother pressed.

Alicia looked into her mother's eyes and replied, "Mum, I promise you, I don't love engineering as much as I love you. And teaching is not a bad path - it's what I want to do now." Her mother could see the sincerity in Alicia's expression and relented, saying "If that's what you want, then that's fine. I'll support you."

After her mother's cancer went into remission, Alicia did indeed go on to become a teacher. She excelled in the classroom, quickly becoming a beloved figure among her students. In her free time, she helped manage her parents' café, which they had opened after retiring. The café was a hub for the community, and Alicia's warm presence made it an even more welcoming space.

It was a warm summer evening as Alicia sat around the dining table with her parents, Shirley and Robert, who had just returned from their latest international adventure - a trip to the romantic city of Paris. Ever since they had retired a few years ago, Shirley and Robert had been taking full advantage of their new found freedom, traveling the world and experiencing all that it had to offer.

Alicia watched fondly as her parents recounted their Parisian escapades, their faces alight with joy and excitement. She was grateful that they were finally able to enjoy their retirement to the fullest, after years of facing societal obstacles due to the racial prejudices of the past.

"You know, there was this young French man your mother thought would be the best husband for you," Robert said, a mischievous twinkle in his eye.

Alicia let out a good-natured chuckle. "Mum! I've told you that I'm fine," she said, shaking her head.

"No, you are not. You can't be single at 31 and happy," Martha insisted, her brow furrowed with maternal concern.

"But I am happy," Alicia assured her, a serene smile playing on her lips.

Sensing the need for a topic change, Robert turned to his daughter and asked, "How is it at the café?"

"It's fine," Alicia replied. "I hired a new chef. Remember, I said Mrs. Fenegan quit? She's moving to Chicago to stay with her daughter."

"Yes, you said that. How are you, baby?" Shirley asked, reaching across the table to give Alicia's hand a gentle squeeze.

"I'm fine, mum," Alicia said, her eyes crinkling with amusement. "Work is good, and my students still love me." She chuckled, and the others joined in.

"That's good, baby. I am happy that you are fine," Shirley said, her expression softening. "Meanwhile, did you make this cornbread?" she asked, taking a bite of the golden-brown bread.

"Yes, I did," Alicia answered, a proud smile spreading across her face.

"It's really good... like really, really good," Shirley proclaimed, her eyes widening in delight.

"I just used dad's recipe..." Alicia said, grinning.

"Well, it tastes different and it's a good different, I must say," Shirley remarked, nodding approvingly.

"Thank you, mum," Alicia said, her cheeks flushing with pleasure.

Eager to learn more about his daughter's various endeavors, Robert asked, "How have you been preparing for the Feeding the Homeless event?"

"Well, it's been going all right," Alicia replied. "Nissa and Sarah have been helping me plan."

"Oh! How's Nissa and her baby?" Shirley inquired, her eyes alight with genuine interest.

"Her baby is fine," Alicia answered. "They'll be coming to the café tomorrow, so you can stop by if you'd like."

"Yes, we were planning to do that already," Shirley said, her lips curving into a warm smile.

As the family continued to converse, Alicia felt a sense of contentment wash over her. She was grateful for her loving parents and the support they provided, even as she navigated the challenges and joys of her independent life. The evening passed in a comfortable rhythm of laughter, shared memories, and the familiar flavors of her father's beloved cornbread recipe.

The clock on the mantelpiece struck midnight, its chimes echoing through the dimly lit living room. Alicia sat curled up on the plush couch, her brow furrowed in concentration as she meticulously graded the stack of test papers before her. A mug of steaming coffee rested on the side table, its aroma wafting through the air and keeping her alert during the late-night study session.

Alicia's eyes scanned the pages, her red pen moving swiftly as she marked answers and scribbled notes in the margins. Teaching was her passion, and she took great pride in ensuring her students received the guidance and feedback they needed to succeed. Even if it meant sacrificing her own sleep, Alicia was determined to provide the best possible education for the young minds under her tutelage.

Just as Alicia was about to embark on the next student's test, the sound of soft footsteps caught her attention. She looked up to see her mother, Shirley, entering the living room, a worried expression on her face.

"Baby, you are still up?" Shirley asked, her voice laced with concern as she approached her daughter.

Alicia offered a tired smile. "Yes, mum. I have to grade my students' tests... couldn't sleep?" she replied, setting down her pen and stretching her weary muscles.

"I got up to get water," Shirley explained, her hand reaching out to gently caress Alicia's cheek. "I feel parched."

Nodding in understanding, Alicia said, "Okay, mum. I'll be going to bed soon, in an hour maybe."

Shirley's brow creased with motherly worry. "Don't stay up late, baby," she urged, her gaze fixed on Alicia's exhausted features.

"I won't," Alicia assured her, mustering a reassuring smile. "Good night, mum."

"Good night, baby," Shirley said, her lips pressing a featherlight kiss on Alicia's forehead before turning and exiting the living room.

Once her mother had disappeared, Alicia let out a deep sigh and returned her attention to the stack of test papers. She knew she couldn't avoid her responsibilities, even at the cost of her own rest. With renewed determination, she continued her work, her fingers grasping the pen as she meticulously reviewed each student's responses, determined to provide the thoughtful feedback that would help them grow and learn.

The warm, golden sunlight filtering through the delicate lace curtains gradually roused Alicia from her slumber. Though it was a Saturday morning, the familiar sound of her alarm clock had dutifully stirred her awake at the usual weekday hour. With a soft groan, Alicia reluctantly peeled herself from the plush comfort of her bed, her body protesting the decision to stay up well past midnight grading the last batch of essays for her English Composition course.

The alluring aroma of freshly baked bread and sizzling eggs wafted through the bedroom, beckoning Alicia towards the kitchen. Rubbing the sleep from her eyes, she shuffled into the en-suite bathroom, where she meticulously went through her morning routine. First, she splashed cool water on her face, the crisp sensation helping to chase away the last vestiges of drowsiness. Then, she picked up her trusty toothbrush and methodically scrubbed away any lingering residue, the minty taste invigorating her senses.

Clad in a plush, terrycloth robe, Alicia emerged from the bedroom and made her way towards the tantalizing smells emanating from the kitchen. As she entered the living room, she found her mother, Shirley, standing at the stove, her gaze focused intently on the contents of a well-worn cast-iron pan. Alicia's father, Robert, was seated at the kitchen table, watching Shirley with an adoring expression, his eyes sparkling with contentment as she playfully fed him a bite of the golden-yellow scramble.

"Good morning, mum. Good morning, dad," Alicia greeted, her lips curving into a small, affectionate smile as she crossed the room and poured herself a steaming cup of freshly brewed coffee from the carafe on the counter.

"Good morning, baby," Shirley replied, her voice warm and soothing, her eyes shining with maternal love as she acknowledged her daughter's presence.

"Good morning, baby," Robert echoed, his brow creasing with concern as he studied Alicia's face. "Did you get any sleep? I heard you moving around late last night."

Alicia nodded, taking a sip of the aromatic brew, the rich, bold flavor jumpstarting her senses. "I got some sleep, but very little. I have to meet with Nissa and Sarah at the café this morning to go over the plans for the food drive."

Shirley nodded in understanding, her nimble fingers expertly maneuvering the spatula to ensure the eggs cooked to perfection. "Okay. You should eat breakfast then, but I'll be over at the café when I'm done here to bake some pastries."

"Oh! That would be lovely. Thanks, mum," Alicia said, her eyes brightening with anticipation at the prospect of her mother's homemade treats. "I'll have some of the eggs."

Shirley promptly served a hearty portion of the fluffy, golden scramble onto a plate and placed it in front of Alicia, the steam rising in tantalizing wisps. "Thank you, mum," she said, digging in with gusto, savoring the perfect balance of savory and richness.

"Will you be coming to the store too, dad?" Alicia asked between bites, glancing over at her father, who had been watching the exchange with a fond smile.

Robert grinned, scooping another spoonful of eggs into his mouth, his expression radiating pure delight. "I'll be coming with your mum, too. I heard everyone has been asking for my special cornbread."

Alicia nodded enthusiastically, her eyes lighting up at the mention of her father's renowned baking prowess. "Yes! I tried to bake some, but it didn't taste the same. I don't know what I'm doing wrong."

"Well, I'm here now," Robert said, his eyes twinkling with a hint of mischief, as he prepared to impart his culinary wisdom to his beloved daughter, eager to share the secrets behind his legendary cornbread.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alicia stepped through the familiar doors of the cozy café, the comforting aroma of freshly brewed coffee and baked goods enveloping her senses. Her gaze quickly found Nissa and Sarah seated at their usual table near the back, mugs of steaming liquid in hand as they pored over a stack of papers. A warm smile spread across Alicia's face as she made her way over to join them.

"Morning, you two," she greeted, her voice laced with a hint of weary affection as she slid into the chair across from them. The late nights spent grading essays had taken a slight toll, but her excitement for the upcoming food drive had her spirits lifted.

Nissa glanced up, her own face brightening with a smile. "Hey, Alicia! I'm so glad you're here. We've got a lot to go over." She gestured to the papers spread out before them, the organized chaos a testament to their meticulous planning.

"Absolutely," Alicia agreed, reaching for the mug of coffee that Sarah had thoughtfully prepared for her. She took a grateful sip. "So, Nissa, you'll be in charge of getting the shirts printed, right?"

Nissa nodded, her brow furrowing in concentration. "Yes, I'll go over there on my way home today. Hopefully, we can have them ready in time for the volunteers."

"Thank you, Nissa. I really appreciate it," Alicia said, her gaze warm and sincere. "And I'll be baking the pastries, and my mum is helping with the food preparations."

Alicia turned her attention to Sarah, her smile widening. "Sarah, you'll be in charge of getting the water and drinks, yes?"

Sarah nodded, her expression thoughtful. "Okay, so are we getting more hands for that day? You know how overwhelmed we were last year with the crowd."

Alicia's expression turned slightly sheepish. "Yes, I spoke to some of my students, and they've agreed to come and help with serving the food. Hopefully, that will take some of the pressure off."

Nissa let out a relieved sigh, her shoulders visibly relaxing. "That's great news. I remember how chaotic it was, trying to keep up with the demand. Having extra volunteers will make a huge difference."

"Absolutely," Alicia agreed, her gaze shifting between her two friends, the bond of their shared purpose evident in the way their eyes sparkled with determination. "I think we're really going to make this year's food drive a huge success."

Sarah reached across the table, giving Alicia's hand a gentle squeeze. "With the three of us working together, I have no doubt about it. This community is so lucky to have you, Alicia."

Alicia felt a warm flush creep up her cheeks, her heart swelling with gratitude. "Thank you, Sarah. But I couldn't do it without the two of you. This is a team effort, and I'm so glad to have you both by my side."

The trio fell into a comfortable silence, each lost in their own thoughts as they sipped their coffee and contemplated the tasks that lay ahead. Alicia couldn't help but feel a sense of pride and excitement, knowing that their hard work and dedication would make a tangible difference in the lives of those in need.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

The cozy, inviting atmosphere of the café enveloped Alicia, Nissa, and Sarah as they sat around the small, circular table nestled in the corner of the room. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and baked goods mingled in the air, creating a comforting ambiance that seemed to wrap around the three friends like a warm embrace.

Alicia leaned back in her chair, a contented smile playing on her lips as she regarded her companions. "So, I'd have to say that was a really productive meeting we just had," she remarked, her voice lilting with a sense of satisfaction.

Nissa nodded in agreement, her own smile widening. "Absolutely. I'm so glad we were able to accomplish everything we set out to do today." She took a sip of her now-empty coffee mug, her gaze shifting between Alicia and Sarah.

Alicia's eyes gleamed with anticipation as she met Nissa's gaze. "In that case, shall we plan to meet again next week? I feel like we've really laid a strong foundation that we can build upon."

Sarah, who had been quietly listening, perked up at Alicia's suggestion. "Next week works perfectly for me," she replied, her tone enthusiastic. "I'm definitely in."

Alicia pushed her chair back and stood, smoothing the wrinkles in her flowing, floral-patterned dress. "Wonderful. In that case, I'm going to refill my coffee and grab a little something to eat. Can I get either of you anything while I'm up?"

Sarah shook her head regretfully, a sheepish expression crossing her face. "No, thank you. I actually need to be heading out soon. I have to pick Linda up from daycare, and I don't want to be late."

Alicia stepped around the table and enveloped Sarah in a warm, affectionate hug. "Okay, well I'll see you in a few days then?" she said, her voice softening.

"Definitely," Sarah replied, returning the embrace. "See you soon." With a final wave, she grabbed her oversized purse and made her way towards the exit, the jingle of the cafe's door chimes trailing in her wake.

Nissa watched the exchange with a contented expression, her gaze following Sarah's retreating form before turning her attention back to Alicia. "In that case, I'll take a fresh cup of coffee and one of those delectable chocolate muffins, if you don't mind," she said, her lips curling into a playful grin.

Alicia's eyes lit up, and she flashed Nissa a bright, enthusiastic smile. "Coming right up!" she exclaimed, her steps light and energetic as she made her way towards the counter, her mind already contemplating the week ahead.
