Chapter 1 - Blair and William

- DAD! DAD! -

A little girl was jumping around the bed, excited.

- Good morning Blair, what's happening. -

The man woke up and smiled for her.

- HAPPY BIRTHDAY! -

She shouted moving her arms, bug legs and tail in a gesture of commemoration, after that, she put a drawing on his bed.

- Thanks Blair, but it's not my birthday. You're such a good artist! -

He told her calmly, while petting her head. He got out of bed, put on his shirt and went to the kitchen, where he put the drawing on the fridge with a magnet, puts her on her highchair and starts to make breakfast.

- Awwn! Why don't you just tell me when is your birthday? -

- Because it is not that important. -

- But my birthday is impotant! And you are impotant! YEAH TOAST! -

- Yeah, it's a toast! -

Blair picks the toast and brings it to her left "eye".

- Blair… What have I told you about eating? -

- Oh, sorry. -

Blair puts the toast down to her mouth.

Out of all the kids in the country, Blair is possibly one of the weirdest ones. She has a demonic tail, while most demoniac descendents start growing one during puberty. She has sharp horns, covered by her pale skin. She has 4 bug legs coming out of the sides of her head. All her teeth and tongues are big and spiky, even the ones on her "eyes". And most importantly, her eyes and mouth looks like 3 holes for and infinit empty black void, where her eyeballs were supposed to be, there were just 2 big holes, that could transform into sharp toothed mouths, yet she was still able to see. Besides her monstrous features, she was an adorable looking kid, with straight platinum hair, pale skin, pink cheeks and an adorable facial structure that resembles her dad a lot. She was also almost always smiling with her permanent mouth. Her dad always dressed her up with beautiful pastel color dresses, mainly pink ones. They were a happy family of two in a small apartment, in a big city.

Rhyolite is the most diverse country in the world, not just because of the large waves of immigrants they had in the past, but also because Rhyolite is the queendom of Spirits. Spirits can have any shape of form and every kind of magic as long as it is related to the winds or the plants. Currently the only pure spirits of the queendom are the royal family and some nobles. It is the most perfect place to go if you want to disappear. Just be sure you know the basics of the spirit language.

William and Blair are not spirits, not even 1%, they are mostly vampires. He is mostly vampire, nobody knows what kind of creature Blair is. The Windbreak Foundation theorizes that Blair has some kind of mutation that made her develop characteristics of extinct creatures that may be lost in her bloodline.

- Don't forget to brush your tongues. -

- But I just used one! -

- But that doesn't mean you can just not brush them. -

William was trying to teach Blair how to take care of her own basic hygiene, since she was already 3 years old. Time really does fly, It's almost like the Windbreak Foundation found them yesterday, or maybe the trauma was still too vivid on William's head. It was quite hard for William to teach Blair to brush her teeth, because of the constant need of looking at the mirror. William's face had been deformed on the left side, and one of his canines was missing. It wasn't his fault, but he just didn't want to be reminded of that.

- I finish! Let's go to my restaurant? -

- Okay then. -

Blair picks William's sleeve and starts guiding him to her room. Then she makes him sit on the floor and starts setting up her imaginary restaurant. He asks her if she needs any help but she denies it because it's her restaurant. She gives him a lot of imaginary foods and then starts singing happy birthday in sedento, the same way he did on her birthday last week, but with a small empty pink toy plate instead of an actual cake.

- Umm! Everything was delicious! But it's not my birthday today. -

- Then it will be ten tens of Belles! -

- What? Why is it so expensive? -

- Because IF it was your birthday, it would be for free! -

Blair gets pissy and crosses her arms angrily. William gets up and pets her head again.

- Don't worry, it is nothing, okay? -

- BUT! But! I WANNA PARTY FOR YOU TOO! -

Blair opens her arms and stomps hard on the floor, and after 2 seconds she starts crying. William gets a little nervous with the situation, but rapidly tries to recompose and hugs her, and starts softly passing his hand on the back of her head. He continued for 20 minutes until Blair finally stopped crying.

- You're good now? -

- Y-Yes… -

- If I give you another toast, would you be happy? -

- YES! -

Blair's expression rapidly changes from upset to super happy, so happy she was almost shining. So William gives her another toast. While she was eating, he receives a message from work on the light green screen they have on the wall that Blair nicknamed weird green painting. "Why on my day off?" William asked himself while going to check. Luckily, it was just an invite to an event that would happen next week. But not so luckily, this event was mandatory and was going to be ridiculously huge, considering that 3 of the most important companies that deals with the irrational monsters, mutations and the overall magic related dangers of the world would be there as well. The only thing he can do after reading the invitation was looking at Blair feeling a mixture of sadness, apprehension and worry.

Because of the nature of her mutation, she could either be seen as a super valuable weapon and be forced out of his care to be used as such or be instantly killed to prevent nothing bad would be caused by her mere existence. And because of the way it works, he can't hire a babysitter or put her in daycare. "Maybe if I pretend to get sick… No, no, bad idea, I would need to prove it. Should I actually get sick? But what if I pass it to Blair? bad idea! Bad idea! If Blair gets sick, do I need to prove it? No, no, better not risk. Wait a minute, if it's child free I could stay at home!" He reads the invite again.

- Dad, what happened? -

- Blair… Do you want to go to a event with me? -

- YES! YES! YES! I TOLD YOU! I TOLD YOU! I TOLD YOU! -

- Blair, the event is not for me, and it's not a party. -

- Ah what? Then is for who? -

- It's just an event. Let's get you a dress, shall we?

- WOOHOO! SHOPPING! -

Blair jumped out of her seat and William helped her to change her lilac bunny pajamas to a light green t-shirt, pink overalls and a pink bonnet with white round sunglasses. William put on a dark gray jeans and a facemask, he picked her bag and passed over 2 minutes in front of the door before actually opening to go out. They went to the closest shopping mall, Phantom Park Mall, and bought a super cute sparkling pink dress with long sleeves. They passed in front of several stores with monster based products and William noticed the sales of these products were increasing a lot, that was considerably disgusting for him but he thought maybe it was just culture shock.

The day of the event finally comes and Blair is ready. She looked like some sort of cupcake princess with that dress and, bug legs were covered by a white bonnet and her tail was secured with a band wrapped around the abdomen, she had some doll-like shoes, her white round sunglasses and a very small heart shaped purse where she herself put her essentials (a bib and an emergency lip balm). But William wasn't ready, he had been staring at the mirror for over half an hour now. He tried to cover that huge scar with makeup, but it was too painful and the surface of the area didn't help either. At first, he thought about using a more formal hairstyle, but the disgust of his own face was screaming louder. "What if I meet someone actually important there? I should really have tried to get sick." So he decided to use his hair down as always, covering half of the scar with his platinum bangs. That wouldn't hide that much but was better than showing that never fully healing wound that was going from his hairline to almost his upper lip. After slowly stopping focusing on the left side of his face, William noticed that his only eye had a massive eye bag, and that combined with the bangs made him look like an emo edgelord teenager that probably identifies with any swordmaster with a dark color pallet and at least one rage scene. But that was the best he could do for now. He transferred the things from Blair's bag to a backpack. He wore the face mask and stood still in front of the door for 2 minutes before opening it. They went by barefoot to the teleporter and went to the event by the workers entrance. It was dark and empty, probably because almost nobody wanted to enter by the teleporter to such an important event. They went to the corridors and made their way to another teleporter inside the building to the place where the event was happening.

- So shining! Look! Look! There is food there! -

Blair is super excited while William is quite uncomfortable with the amount of people there. She picks William's sleeve and starts guiding him to the buffet. He quickly stops and tells her they should get a table first. Actually William instantly recognized the manager of the upper rank and wanted to avoid her at all costs.

The Windbreak Foundation is the biggest organization that deals with magic in Rhyolite. They have a total of 14 schools around the country, 10 official magical labs and 12 M.M.D (Monster/Mutants Departament). The M.M.Ds are the place with most of the employees of the Foundation. They capture or kill the monsters and mutants, and are ranked from 5 to 1. The few who are on the A rank usually are turned into celebrities. William is very interested in NOT calling that much attention, so he avoids becoming a A ranked the best he can. Only B rank hunters and above were invited so most of the hunters weren't there. Becoming a C rank hunter the moment he entered was already way too risky, so he usually finishes the missions as fast as possible and runs away.

After getting a table, William sees that the upper rank manager is still on the buffet so he forces Blair to wash her hands and starts tricking her till the manager finally gets out of the buffet so they can go get her food. They end up with a plate as big as Blair's head. While she puts her bib all by herself, someone approaches.

- WILLY! Long time no see! How are you doing? -

Luckily, it was just Dustine. They worked together on a considerable amount of missions. She had a pair of antlers and pointy ears with a lot of earrings. Her hair was pitch black, straight and long, her skin was olive and her eyes were dark green. She was wearing a lot of jewelry and a basic black dress and black high heels.

- We're fine. How are you? -

- I'm fine too! Oh hi Blair! You look so cute! -

Blair didn't answer because she was with her mouth full, but she smiled. Dustine sits with them and starts talking.

- More please! -

Blair says holding her plate up to William.

- Wow! That. Was fast. -

Dustine says, jokingly.

- It's because I'm growing! I'm going to become a super giant woman when I become an adult! -

- Sure you are! -

- Dustine, can you look at her for a while? I'm getting more food for Blair. -

- Sure! I love that little girly! -

William leaves while Dustine is poking Blair's cheek with her index finger. Dustine is, besides Blair, William's only friend. He made his first mission ever with her and she helped him learn the rhyolitan language (the language spoken in Rhyolite). Because she never asked questions about his past, unlike most people he had to deal with in his first months at the Windbreak Foundation, so they ended up becoming friends. The only real problem to William is that Dustine seems to be a little too popular. She is a B rank, but the speed she went from 5 to 2 was a record. Her extrovert personality also helps her to continue to be popular.

- Tine! I have been looking for you all night! You look awesome! Is that your daughter? -

Sarah Klaw walks towards Dustine, she was majoritarily an orc with reddish skin, big muscles, dark eyes, white straight hair braided with flowers, spiky tusks and was wearing a sparkly blue sheath and white high heels. Sarah was also a considerably known A rank, not like the top 10 of the Foundation, but still somewhat of a celebrity.

- Nah, I'm just looking at her for her dad. -

Sarah instantly grabs William's chair and sits, excited. While Blair just looks quietly and confused at the women talking.

- Oh my! Is he your boyfriend? Is he pretty? -

- Oh no! He's too young for me! -

- Oh. Who is he after all? -

- He's right there! -

William stood still far away from them, with Blair's plate and clearly bothered with the A rank present on the table with his mutant toddler. But, he didn't move, the fear of being recognized freezed him. But Dustine noticed just his presence and pointed at him. Blair stretches to see where aunty Dustine was pointing at, sees her plate and jumps off the table to pick her food. Dustine tried to catch her, but Blair was not only faster, but Dustine was wearing heels. Blair gets to her dad and grabs his leg, waking him up.

- Why are you taking so looooong? -

Blair asks, upset.

- Oh, sorry. Do you… Want to go back and eat? -

- Why can't I eat now? -

- Because you can't eat a meal standing up. -

Blair jumps a little bit until she grabs his right forearm and tries to bring him back to the table while William tries to equilibrate the plate with his left hand.

- Get out! That's dad's place! -

Blair tells Sarah aggressively while making a move gesture, she usually gets quite angry when hungry. William internally freaks out and freezes again, luckily, Sarah thought that was quite funny and cute, so she giggles and stands up. Blair tries to put her dad back to the table, but the moment he unfreezes and sits down with her, he lectures about how wrong it is to treat people that way. And that makes Blair even more angry.

- Awn! Just let her, she's just a kid! -

- If I just let her act the way she wants, she is going to become a spoiled adult and get in trouble for thinking she's superior to any rule!… -

William answers angrily, but just when he finishes his answer, he notices it wasn't Dustine's voice. He slowly turned to the left scared and saw Sarah, she seemed to be chill, but he was convinced that they messed up but he was too scared to say a word. So Blair decided to eat all the food on the plate all by herself while her dad was freaking out the fourth time in the evening. Dustine didn't noticed William discomfort, since they met, William didn't had been physically expressive, especially about his feelings, she also didn't know about the fact that William didn't want by any cost to go higher on the ranks, she just thought he was shy and still adaption to the new country and she wanted to break the awkward silence.

- Sarah! Remember that guy I told you about? -

- Which one? -

- That one that messed up a lot of spells and was super fast at slaying the monsters. -

- Yeah, I remember! You said something about recuperation about that guy too… -

- That 's him! -

Dustine slaps William twice on the back, which almost made him scream and made him freak out even more. "I DEFINITELY SHOULD HAVE STAYED AT HOME!" he thought.

- Oh! That 's so cool! Was the fast slaying an accident or not? -

Blair finally ended her meal, so William without a second thought picked her up and left.

- … I… think we embarrassed him. -

Sarah said, a little worried and ready to follow him to apologize. But Dustine grabs her arm to stop her.

- Just let him, he's shy. I apologize later. -

William goes outside and sits down with Blair in his arms.

- Dad? -

- … Oh, sorry. What? -

- Why are we so distant from everybody? -

- It's… Nothing. -

- THAT AGAIN? -

- Blair… -

- THE BIRTHDAY IS NOT IMPOTANT! THAN YOU ARE NOT IMPOTANT! THAN THE PARTY IS NOT IMPOTANT! WHAT IS IMPOTANT? -

Blair stood up on the bench they were and started screaming sounded like she was about to cry, but something worse was starting to happen. Her body was getting bigger, especially her arms. Her voice was getting deeper, her tooth sharpener, including the ones in her "eyes", the bug legs started to become sharp like spikes and grow bigger, her ears were shrinking, an eye opened on her throat, it was pitch black, but was watering and angry. The band ripped and her tail was also growing. This is what happened when a well fed Blair was almost starting to throw a tantrum. But before the transformation became noticeable to the ridiculous amount of hunters inside the building and Blair actually started a tantrum, William maneges to calm her down offering her the lip balm. Blair eats the lip balm but continues angry, after going back to her regular body and sitting down, William redoes the bow that held the bonnet and puts back her sunglasses that she dropped while transforming because her ears were shrinking.

- You know, Blair… Dad is… A little afraid of this place. -

- Why? -

- You will understand when you get older. -

- But I want to know now! -

- You wouldn't understand now. We can go back earlier if you want, besides eating, it doesn't seem like there is anything for you to do here. -

- But I like eating! -

- You can do it anywhere honestly. -

- Can we get more food before going home? -

- Sure! But first let's hide this, okay? -

William points at Blair's tail and Blair awkwardly follows his finger with her head, and then she looks at him and nods after 2 seconds of staring at him. They stand up and she shoves her tail very poorly under her skirt, so he picks her up and uses the texture of the dress along with his arm to hide her tail. They re-enter the building and William goes stray up to the buffet and gives Blair a piece of meat when more unwanted attention comes in.

- Mister Leech, long time no see! -

It was Jack Wilton, his rank manager. He was a tall man with dark skin, pointed ears and long hair. He was usually cheerful and kind, but the positive attention he gave to William was dangerous for his regular and not media relevant life.

- Hi sir. We need to go now, it was a good event anyway but you know how kids are. -

William was less nervous with his manager than with Sarah. Even if being in a too positive light with Jack could make him an A rank, therefore some kind of sub celebrity, being seen with someone like Sarah Klaw would be enough for him to end up in a gossip magazine.

- Can we talk for a moment? -

Jack seemed to be serious, it was hard to see him like that. William already assumed the worst: He would either get fired or get promoted. Luckily or unluckily, Blair started to get agitated and her tail started moving a bit, so William grabbed her dress harder.

- Sorry, I really need to go now! -

William walks away quickly and moves back to the portal where they came from.

- Wilton, didn't you find mister Leech? -

The A rank manager, Rosalind Redrot, a short older and elegant lady, with pinkish skin and a pair of fairy red and black wings, asked, slowly getting closer. She wasn't an example of patience.

- I think he had an emergency, Redrot. -

- So mark a reunion with him. I want the answer by next week! -

She replied aggressively, while getting her plate and picking fruits. William finally gets back home, relieved. They change into their pajamas and just before going to bed, Blair wants a snack. William gives Blair just one cookie and makes her brush all her teeth. He puts Blair on her bed, covers her up and kisses her on the forehead.

- Good night Dad. -

- Good night Blair. -Â
