Chereads / The Gaunt Legacy / Chapter 77 - Welcome to Remnant

Chapter 77 - Welcome to Remnant

Gwendolyn landed and rolled, jogging a few meters as she tried to kill the momentum from her arrival. However, she didn't manage to stop in time and slammed heavily into somebody's door. Holding her head from the pain, she groaned and looked up just as the door opened.

Standing in the doorway was a man with light blond hair and a concerned expression. "Are you okay?" he asked, his voice warm and fatherly.

Gwendolyn winced, rubbing her head. "I'll be fine. Just a rough landing. Sorry about your door."

The man chuckled softly. "No harm done. I'm Taiyang Xiao Long. Who might you be?"

Gwendolyn managed a smile despite the pain. "Gwendolyn Grimshaw Gaunt. But you can call me Gwen."

Taiyang nodded, stepping aside to allow her to enter. "Come in, Gwen. You look like you could use a drink and a place to rest for a bit."

Gwendolyn hesitated for a moment but then nodded gratefully, stepping into the house. The interior was cozy and welcoming, a stark contrast to her chaotic arrival. Taiyang led her to the kitchen, where he poured her a glass of water.

"Thanks," Gwendolyn said, taking a sip. "I appreciate it. I've had quite a journey."

"I can see that," Taiyang replied, his eyes filled with curiosity. "Where did you come from, if you don't mind me asking?"

Gwendolyn took a deep breath, gathering her thoughts. "It's a long story. I've been traveling through different worlds, trying to find my way back to my friends and family. I guess I took a wrong turn and ended up here."

Taiyang raised an eyebrow, clearly intrigued. "Different worlds, huh? Sounds like quite the adventure."

"You could say that," Gwendolyn said with a small laugh. "It's been a mix of excitement and danger."

"Well, you're safe here," Taiyang assured her. "This is Patch, a relatively peaceful place compared to some other parts of Remnant. You can stay here as long as you need."

Gwendolyn felt a wave of relief wash over her. "Thank you, Taiyang. That means a lot."

Taiyang smiled warmly. "No problem. Now, why don't you tell me more about your journey? I'm sure you have some fascinating stories."

As they sat down at the kitchen table, Gwendolyn began to recount her adventures, from her time at Hogwarts to her journey through the void, her stint with the Red-Haired Pirates, and her return to Orario. Taiyang listened intently, occasionally nodding or asking questions.

As the evening wore on, Gwendolyn felt more at ease. Taiyang's genuine interest and understanding made her feel welcome and safe. For the first time in a while, she felt like she could truly relax.

"So, what's your plan now?" Taiyang asked, leaning back in his chair.

Gwendolyn sighed, looking out the window at the setting sun. "I'm not entirely sure. I need to figure out where I am and what this world is like. But for now, I think I'll take you up on your offer to stay here and rest. I need to recharge before I make any more jumps."

Taiyang nodded. "Sounds like a good plan. Take your time, Gwen. There's no rush. And if you need any help or guidance, I'm here."

Gwendolyn smiled, feeling a sense of gratitude. "Thank you, Taiyang. I appreciate your kindness."

As night fell, Gwendolyn settled into the guest room Taiyang had prepared for her. The bed was soft, and the room was peaceful. She felt a sense of calm she hadn't felt in a long time. Despite the uncertainty of her journey, she knew she had found a safe haven for now.

Lying in bed, she thought about her next steps. There was much to learn about this new world, and she was determined to make the most of her time here. With a final, contented sigh, she closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep, ready to face whatever challenges and adventures awaited her in Remnant.

-

The next morning, Gwendolyn was woken by the sounds of activity in the house. She got up, stretched, and made her way downstairs to the kitchen. There, she found herself in the company of three new faces.

A girl around her age with bright yellow hair and a confident demeanor was chatting animatedly with a younger girl who had striking red-black hair and an enthusiastic expression. A tired-looking man with black hair was sipping coffee at the table, his eyes reflecting both fatigue and amusement.

As Gwendolyn entered, the two girls turned their attention to her with bright, curious eyes.

"Hi there!" the older girl greeted, her voice cheerful. "I'm Yang Xiao Long. And this," she gestured to the younger girl, "is my sister, Ruby Rose."

Ruby's eyes sparkled with excitement. "Hi, Gwendolyn! Tai told us all about you! You're from another world, right? That's so cool!"

Gwendolyn smiled warmly, appreciating their enthusiasm. "Nice to meet you both. And yes, I've been traveling through different worlds. It's been quite the adventure."

Yang's eyes gleamed mischievously as she leaned in slightly. "So, Gwen, what's it like being a magical traveler? Got any cool stories or... special talents?" Her tone had a flirtatious edge.

Gwendolyn raised an eyebrow, a smirk playing on her lips. "Oh, I have a few tricks up my sleeve. Maybe I'll show you sometime."

Taiyang, who had been quietly observing the interaction, coughed pointedly. "Alright, you two. Let's keep it friendly."

Gwendolyn glanced at Taiyang with a playful smile. "Don't worry, Tai. I'm not one to back down from a challenge, no matter how small."

Yang laughed, clearly enjoying the banter. "I like her already."

Ruby, unable to contain her excitement, chimed in, "Can you show us some of your magic, Gwen? Please?"

Gwendolyn nodded, her smile softening at Ruby's eagerness. "Sure, Ruby. I'd be happy to. But first, how about we have some breakfast? It looks like a busy day ahead."

As they all settled around the table, the atmosphere was filled with a mix of curiosity and camaraderie. Gwendolyn felt a sense of belonging beginning to form, a feeling she cherished after her long and uncertain journey.

Over breakfast, they shared stories and laughter. Gwendolyn talked about her adventures, while Yang and Ruby filled her in on life in Remnant. Taiyang watched them with a contented smile, pleased to see his daughters so engaged and happy.

As the day progressed, Gwendolyn found herself feeling more at home. She knew there would be challenges ahead, but with new friends by her side, she felt ready to face whatever came next in this strange and fascinating world.

After breakfast, the group headed outside to a spacious area where they could safely practice and demonstrate their abilities. Gwendolyn felt a mixture of excitement and curiosity, eager to both show her magic and learn about the unique powers of this world.

Gwendolyn stood in the center of the clearing, her eyes closed as she focused her energy. She raised her hand, and with a flick of her wrist, conjured a shimmering shield of magical energy. The translucent barrier sparkled in the sunlight, mesmerizing the onlookers.

Yang whistled appreciatively. "That's pretty cool, Gwen. What else can you do?"

Gwendolyn smiled, feeling the familiar surge of mana within her. "Watch this." She extended her other hand, and a burst of fire shot out, forming a blazing phoenix that soared into the sky before dissipating into sparks.

Ruby's eyes widened with awe. "Wow! That was amazing! Your magic is so different from anything I've seen."

Taiyang nodded, impressed. "You've got some serious talent, Gwen."

Gwendolyn lowered her hands, the magical energy fading away. "Thank you. Now, I'd love to learn more about the powers in this world. Could you explain how they work?"

Yang and Ruby exchanged excited glances. Yang stepped forward, her posture confident. "Sure thing. In Remnant, we have something called Aura. It's a manifestation of our soul that acts as a shield and can enhance our abilities."

Ruby added, "And then there are Semblances, unique powers that are different for everyone. It's like an extension of your Aura. Mine, for example, allows me to move really fast."

Gwendolyn listened intently, absorbing the information. "Aura and Semblances... fascinating. Do you think you could help me unlock mine?"

Yang grinned. "Absolutely. It'll take some training, but we'll get you there."

Taiyang nodded in agreement. "It's all about finding and understanding your inner self. We'll guide you through the process."

Gwendolyn felt a surge of gratitude and excitement. "Thank you. I'm ready to learn."

The group spent the rest of the day training. Yang and Ruby demonstrated their abilities, showing Gwendolyn how to tap into her Aura. Taiyang provided guidance and encouragement, his experience evident in his patient instruction.

As the sun began to set, Gwendolyn felt a strange sensation within her. With the guidance of her new friends, she focused inward, reaching for the core of her being. A warm, protective energy began to flow through her, surrounding her like a comforting embrace.

"I think I feel it," Gwendolyn said, her voice filled with wonder. "My Aura... it's activating."

Yang and Ruby cheered, their excitement contagious. Taiyang smiled proudly. "Well done, Gwen. This is just the beginning. With time and practice, you'll discover your Semblance too."

Gwendolyn nodded, a determined smile on her face. "I can't wait to see what it is. Thank you all for helping me."

As they made their way back to the house, Gwendolyn felt a sense of accomplishment and anticipation. She had begun to unlock the powers of this world, and with the support of her new friends, she felt ready to continue her journey of discovery and growth.

With a beautiful golden glow surrounding her, Gwendolyn stood in the clearing, her Aura finally awakened. The warmth and protection it provided felt like a gentle embrace, enhancing her senses and making her feel more connected to the world around her.

Yang and Ruby watched in awe, their excitement palpable. Taiyang stood back, a proud smile on his face as he observed Gwendolyn's progress.

At that moment, a new figure emerged from the shadows of the trees, a man with disheveled black hair and a red cloak. He took a swig from his flask before speaking. "Well, well. Looks like someone's got some talent."

Gwendolyn turned to face the newcomer, her golden Aura still glowing. "Hello. I'm Gwendolyn."

The man nodded. "Name's Qrow Branwen. I heard you've been learning pretty fast. That Aura of yours is impressive."

Gwendolyn smiled modestly. "Thank you, Qrow. But honestly, I just have a lot of practice with sensing different energies. It helped me tune into my Aura quicker."

Qrow raised an eyebrow, clearly intrigued. "Different energies, huh? Sounds like you've had quite the journey."

Yang stepped forward, still grinning from ear to ear. "Gwen's been traveling through different worlds, learning all sorts of magic. She's amazing."

Ruby nodded enthusiastically. "And now she's one of us! Well, kind of. She's learning about Aura and Semblances."

Qrow chuckled, taking another sip from his flask. "Well, you're in good hands with this lot. Just be careful—unlocking your Aura is one thing, but mastering it is another."

Gwendolyn nodded, her determination shining through. "I understand. I'm ready to put in the work."

Taiyang stepped forward, placing a hand on her shoulder. "You've already made great progress, Gwen. Just keep practicing, and you'll discover your Semblance soon enough."

Gwendolyn looked around at her new friends, feeling a deep sense of gratitude. "Thank you all. I couldn't have done this without your help."

Qrow smirked. "Well, if you ever need a sparring partner, you know where to find me. I've got a few tricks up my sleeve too."

Yang laughed. "Just don't let him drink too much before the match, Gwen."

Gwendolyn joined in the laughter, feeling a sense of belonging and camaraderie that she hadn't felt in a long time. The journey ahead was still uncertain, but with her Aura awakened and the support of her new friends, she felt ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.

As the golden glow of her Aura began to fade with the setting sun, Gwendolyn took a deep breath, savoring the moment. She was on the right path, and with each step, she was becoming stronger and more confident in her abilities.

The next few days were filled with intense training and practice. Gwendolyn worked tirelessly to hone her Aura, learning to use it in various ways under the guidance of Taiyang, Yang, Ruby, and even Qrow. Each lesson brought her closer to discovering her Semblance, and each day, she felt more at home in this new world.

One evening, as she sat with the group around a campfire, Gwendolyn couldn't help but feel a sense of peace and fulfillment. She had come a long way from the chaos of the void, and now she was building a new life filled with hope and purpose.

Looking at the faces of her friends illuminated by the flickering flames, Gwendolyn knew that whatever came next, she was ready. She had found a new family in Remnant, and with them by her side, there was nothing she couldn't achieve.

As the days passed, Gwendolyn's bond with Yang grew stronger and more vibrant. Their relationship blossomed quickly, fueled by their shared love of banter and the thrill of combat. The two often sought each other out for sparring matches, their skills and competitive spirits pushing them to new heights.

One sunny afternoon, after an intense sparring session that left them both breathless and exhilarated, Yang and Gwendolyn sat on the grass, cooling off and chatting.

"You know, Gwen," Yang said, brushing a strand of hair from her face, "you're really something else. I've never met anyone quite like you."

Gwendolyn smiled, feeling a warm glow in her chest. "Same here, Yang. You've got this incredible energy that's just... infectious."

They laughed, the bond between them growing stronger with each shared moment.

A few days later, as they gathered for dinner, Yang and Ruby exchanged excited glances. Taiyang, noticing the look, cleared his throat. "So, girls, have you told Gwen the news yet?"

Yang shook her head. "Not yet, Dad. We were waiting for the right moment."

Ruby, unable to contain her excitement, blurted out, "We're going to Beacon Academy! It's a school for Huntsmen and Huntresses. We'll be training to become the best of the best."

Gwendolyn's eyes widened in surprise. "Beacon Academy? That's amazing! I'm so happy for you both."

Yang grinned, though there was a hint of sadness in her eyes. "Yeah, it's a big deal. We've been looking forward to it for a long time. But... we're going to miss you, Gwen."

Ruby nodded, her enthusiasm tempered by the realization. "Yeah, we will. But we'll keep in touch, and maybe you can visit us there!"

Gwendolyn felt a pang of sadness but smiled through it. "I'll miss you both too. You've become such important parts of my life. But I know this is a great opportunity for you. You're going to be amazing Huntresses."

Taiyang placed a reassuring hand on Gwen's shoulder. "And you're always welcome here, Gwen. This is your home too."

Gwendolyn nodded, grateful for their support. "Thank you, Tai. I appreciate it. And who knows? Maybe I'll find a way to keep busy while you're at Beacon."

Yang chuckled, nudging her playfully. "Knowing you, you'll probably find some wild adventure to get into."

They all laughed, the mood lightening despite the bittersweet news.

In the days that followed, Gwendolyn cherished every moment with Yang and Ruby. They trained together, shared stories, and made plans to stay in touch. As the day of their departure drew near, the reality of their impending separation set in, but they faced it with determination and optimism.

On the morning of their departure, Gwendolyn stood with Taiyang, watching as Yang and Ruby prepared to leave for Beacon. The air was filled with excitement and a touch of melancholy.

Yang hugged Gwendolyn tightly. "Stay out of trouble, okay? And keep practicing. You're going to be amazing."

Gwendolyn hugged her back, her voice thick with emotion. "You too, Yang. Knock 'em dead at Beacon."

Ruby bounded over, giving Gwendolyn a big hug. "Bye, Gwen! We'll see you soon, okay?"

Gwendolyn nodded, her heart full. "See you soon, Ruby. Take care of each other."

As Yang and Ruby waved goodbye and set off for Beacon, Gwendolyn watched them go, a mixture of pride and sadness in her heart. She knew they were off to do great things, and she was grateful for the time they had spent together.

Turning to Taiyang, she smiled. "Guess it's just us for now."

Taiyang smiled back. "Yeah, but don't worry. We'll find plenty to keep busy. And they'll be back before you know it."

Gwendolyn nodded, feeling a sense of resolve. She had faced many challenges and adventures in her journey, and she knew there were more to come.
