Chereads / The Gaunt Legacy / Chapter 22 - The Duelling Club

Chapter 22 - The Duelling Club

The tension at Hogwarts continued to mount, and rumors about the Chamber of Secrets spread like wildfire. The whispers in the walls, the petrified cat, and the ominous message had everyone on edge. In an attempt to address the growing fears and perhaps provide some sense of security, Professor Lockhart announced the formation of a Duelling Club.

Excitement and curiosity rippled through the student body. Duelling was a chance to learn defensive spells and techniques, to feel empowered in the face of the unknown threat. For Gwendolyn, it was another opportunity to showcase her skills and explore the darker aspects of her magic in a controlled setting.

The Great Hall was transformed into a makeshift duelling arena, with long tables pushed aside and a raised platform in the center. Students gathered eagerly, filling the space with a buzz of anticipation. Gwendolyn arrived with Draco and Daphne, her eyes gleaming with excitement and a hint of madness.

"Welcome, everyone, to the first meeting of the Hogwarts Duelling Club!" Lockhart announced, his voice booming with enthusiasm. "I am your host, Gilderoy Lockhart, winner of the Witch Weekly's Most Charming Smile Award five times in a row. But today, we are not here to talk about my many accomplishments. We are here to learn how to defend ourselves!"

Professor Snape stood beside Lockhart, his expression a mixture of disdain and bemusement. "And I will be assisting," he said curtly, his eyes sweeping over the gathered students.

"Now, let us begin with a demonstration," Lockhart continued, flashing a dazzling smile. "Professor Snape and I will show you the proper way to duel. Wands at the ready!"

The students watched with rapt attention as Lockhart and Snape faced each other on the platform. Lockhart struck a dramatic pose, while Snape looked decidedly more practical and focused.

"Expelliarmus!" Snape called out, his wand flicking with precision.

Lockhart's wand flew from his hand, and he stumbled back, clearly unprepared for the force of the spell. The students erupted in laughter, and Lockhart's smile faltered.

"Yes, well, you see how effective that spell is," Lockhart said, attempting to recover his dignity. "Now, pair up and practice the disarming spell."

Gwendolyn turned to Draco, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "Care to duel, Draco?"

Draco smirked. "Try not to hurt me too badly, Gwen."

They took their positions on the platform, wands at the ready. Gwendolyn felt the familiar thrill of anticipation, the darkness within her stirring eagerly.

"Three... two... one... duel!" Lockhart called out.

"Expelliarmus!" Gwendolyn shouted, her wand moving with fluid precision.

Draco's wand flew from his hand, but he quickly recovered, casting a shield charm to deflect her next spell. They exchanged a flurry of spells, their movements graceful and controlled. Gwendolyn felt the power of her magic surging through her, a heady mix of control and chaos.

Across the hall, Harry and Ron faced each other, their expressions serious. Harry's mind was still preoccupied with the whispers and the fear that gnawed at him, but he was determined to improve his duelling skills.

"Expelliarmus!" Harry called out, successfully disarming Ron.

"Nice one, Harry," Ron said, retrieving his wand. "Let's go again."

The duelling practice continued, with students pairing off and casting spells. The room was filled with flashes of light and the sounds of magic, a temporary reprieve from the fear that had gripped the castle.

As the session drew to a close, Lockhart called for attention. "Excellent work, everyone! Remember, practice makes perfect. And always be prepared to defend yourselves. You never know when danger might strike."

Snape stepped forward. "Let's have a demonstration duel to finish off. Potter, Malfoy, up here."

Harry and Draco exchanged wary glances but stepped onto the platform. They faced each other, wands at the ready.

"Begin!" Lockhart called.

Draco started with a quick, "Serpensortia!" A snake shot out of his wand and landed between him and Harry, hissing menacingly. The students gasped and backed away.

Harry raised his wand, but then something strange happened. He spoke to the snake, and it stopped hissing, turning its head to look at him.

"Leave him alone," Harry said softly.

Gwendolyn felt a strange sensation in her mind, a connection to the hissing sounds. To her astonishment, she understood the words. The realization that Harry was speaking Parseltongue, and that she could understand it, sent a shiver down her spine.

The students around them gasped, and whispers spread through the hall. "He's a Parselmouth!" someone shouted.

Draco looked both surprised and impressed. "A Parselmouth," he muttered, his eyes flicking to Gwendolyn for a moment. She met his gaze with a knowing look.

Snape quickly stepped in, banishing the snake with a flick of his wand. "Enough!" he said sharply. "Duelling Club is dismissed."

The students began to disperse, murmuring excitedly about Harry's ability. Harry, looking bewildered and slightly embarrassed, hurried over to Ron and Hermione.

"Harry, why didn't you tell us you were a Parselmouth?" Hermione asked, her voice filled with concern.

"I didn't know," Harry replied, looking genuinely confused. "It just happened."

Gwendolyn watched from a distance, her mind racing. She had always felt a connection to snakes, a dark affinity that she couldn't quite explain. The fact that Harry shared this ability intrigued her deeply.

As the students filed out of the Great Hall, Gwendolyn caught up with Draco and Daphne.

"Did you see that?" Draco said, his eyes wide with excitement. "Harry Potter, a Parselmouth. Who would have thought?"

Gwendolyn nodded, her thoughts already turning to the implications. "It makes sense, in a way. But there's more to this than we know."

Daphne looked between them, worry etched on her face. "This can't be a coincidence. The Chamber of Secrets, the whispers, and now this. We need to be careful."

Gwendolyn smiled, a dark glint in her eyes. "Careful, yes. But also curious. There's so much more to discover."

As they made their way back to the Slytherin common room, Gwendolyn felt a sense of anticipation. The connection she felt to Harry, the shared ability to speak to snakes, was another piece of the puzzle. The Chamber of Secrets was a mystery waiting to be unraveled, and she was determined to be at the heart of it.

Harry, meanwhile, was grappling with his newfound ability and the fear it brought. The whispers in the walls, the visions of the serpent—everything was converging, and he knew he had to find answers. With Ron and Hermione by his side, he felt a glimmer of hope amidst the darkness.

The duelling club had revealed more than just duelling skills. It had uncovered deeper connections, hidden abilities, and the ever-growing tension that would shape the events to come.

--

The next day, Gwendolyn did something that had never been done before—or at least not in recent memory. As the students filed into the Great Hall for breakfast, she made her way to the Gryffindor table and, without hesitation, sat down directly across from Harry Potter. Her presence caused an immediate ripple of shock and murmurs among the Gryffindors.

Ron Weasley, seated beside Harry, looked up, his mouth full of toast. "What do you think you're doing?" he sputtered, crumbs flying.

Hermione Granger, always one to observe before reacting, narrowed her eyes in curiosity. "Gwendolyn," she began cautiously, "is there something you need?"

Ignoring the initial reactions, Gwendolyn focused her intense gaze on Harry. "So... snakes?" she said, her voice calm and unwavering.

Harry blinked, clearly taken aback. The surprise on his face was evident as he set down his fork. "Yeah," he replied slowly. "Snakes."

Ron, recovering from his initial shock, leaned forward aggressively. "What are you playing at, Grimshaw? Why are you sitting here?"

Gwendolyn glanced at Ron, her expression one of mild amusement. "I'm here to talk to Harry," she said simply. "I didn't realize that was against the rules."

"It's not," Hermione interjected quickly, shooting a warning look at Ron. "It's just... unusual."

Harry, still processing the unexpected conversation, finally spoke up. "What do you want to know?"

Gwendolyn smiled faintly, a glint of interest in her eyes. "You spoke to that snake yesterday. In Parseltongue. That's a rare gift."

The table fell silent. Harry's eyes widened slightly, and Hermione's curiosity deepened. Ron's face was a mixture of confusion and frustration.

"You can speak Parseltongue?" Hermione asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Gwendolyn nodded. "It's a unique ability. Not many people have it. It's interesting that you do."

Harry studied her for a moment, then nodded. "Yeah, it's strange. I didn't even know I could do it until recently."

Gwendolyn leaned in slightly, lowering her voice. "There's more to this, Harry. The whispers, the Chamber of Secrets... There might be more connections than we realize."

Ron huffed, clearly uncomfortable with the direction of the conversation. "You think you're connected to the Chamber of Secrets? That's mad."

"Maybe," Gwendolyn said, unfazed. "But ignoring it won't make it go away."

Hermione looked between Gwendolyn and Harry, her mind working quickly. "You might be right. There's something going on, and it's not just coincidence. We should work together."

Ron looked scandalized. "Work with a Slytherin? Are you serious?"

"Yes, Ron," Hermione replied firmly. "If Gwendolyn has information that can help us, we can't afford to ignore it."

Harry nodded, a determined look in his eyes. "Alright, Gwendolyn. We'll work together. But we have to be careful."

Gwendolyn's smile widened, a hint of satisfaction in her expression. "Agreed. We'll need to keep this between us. The more people know, the more dangerous it becomes."

As the bell rang, signaling the end of breakfast, Gwendolyn stood up. "Meet me in the library tonight. We'll go over what we know."

Harry nodded. "We'll be there."

As Gwendolyn walked away, the Gryffindors continued to stare, their expressions a mix of shock and curiosity. Ron leaned over to Harry, his voice low. "Mate, are you sure about this? She's a Slytherin."

Harry nodded. "I'm sure. We need all the help we can get."

Hermione looked thoughtful. "We'll have to tread carefully, but I think Gwendolyn could be a valuable ally."

Ron sighed, shaking his head. "If you say so."

That night, Harry, Ron, and Hermione made their way to the library, their minds buzzing with questions and uncertainties. Gwendolyn was already there, a stack of books spread out before her.

"Glad you could make it," she said, looking up with a small smile. "We have a lot to discuss."

Harry, Ron, and Hermione sat down, their expressions a mix of curiosity and caution. Gwendolyn wasted no time, diving straight into the topic at hand.

"The Chamber of Secrets is a legend, but it's real," she began, her voice low and intense. "It was created by Salazar Slytherin to purge the school of Muggle-born students. The monster within the Chamber is said to be a basilisk, a serpent of immense power."

Harry and Hermione exchanged glances, the gravity of her words sinking in. Ron, however, still looked skeptical.

"So, you think you know what's in the Chamber?" he asked, his tone dubious.

Gwendolyn nodded, her eyes gleaming with a strange mix of excitement and madness. "Yes, and I believe there's a connection between us and the Chamber. Harry, your ability to speak Parseltongue is a clue. And there are whispers in the walls, voices that seem to be calling."

"Whispers?" Hermione asked, her curiosity piqued. "What kind of whispers?"

Gwendolyn leaned in closer, her voice barely above a whisper. "Voices, speaking in Parseltongue. I've heard them too. They're guiding us, calling us to the Chamber."

Harry felt a chill run down his spine. "And you don't see this as a threat?"

Gwendolyn's smile widened, a hint of something dark and unsettling in her expression. "No, I see it as an opportunity. The darkness, the power—it's all part of something greater. It's fascinating."

Ron recoiled slightly, his unease evident. "You're mad."

Hermione shot him a warning look but couldn't hide her own discomfort. "Gwendolyn, this is serious. The Chamber of Secrets is dangerous. We can't take it lightly."

Gwendolyn's eyes flashed with a mix of defiance and excitement. "I'm not taking it lightly. I'm embracing it. The power within the Chamber is something we can harness, if we're brave enough."

Harry, feeling the weight of responsibility, spoke up. "We need to understand this power, but we also need to be careful. If there's a basilisk, it could kill anyone who looks at it directly. We can't let that happen."

Gwendolyn nodded, her expression serious. "Agreed. We'll need to be cautious. But we can't ignore the potential. The Chamber holds secrets that could change everything."

Hermione, ever the voice of reason, sighed. "We'll need more information. We should research the history of the Chamber and find out everything we can about basilisks. Maybe there's a way to control it, or at least protect ourselves."

Gwendolyn's smile returned, this time more genuine. "Then let's get to work."

As they poured over the books, Harry, Ron, and Hermione couldn't shake the feeling of unease that Gwendolyn's presence brought. Her enthusiasm for the dark and dangerous aspects of their quest was unsettling, but they couldn't deny her knowledge and determination.

Hours passed as they delved into the ancient texts, uncovering fragments of information about the Chamber of Secrets, Salazar Slytherin, and the dreaded basilisk. The more they learned, the more they realized the enormity of the task before them.

At one point, Ron leaned over to Harry and whispered, "Mate, she's definitely mad. But we need her."

Harry nodded grimly. "I know. We just have to be careful."

Hermione, overhearing them, added softly, "We have to keep an eye on her. She's valuable, but unpredictable."

Gwendolyn, absorbed in her reading, seemed oblivious to their whispered conversation. Her mind was racing with thoughts of the power that awaited them, the darkness that called to her. She knew that her fascination with the Chamber and its secrets was bordering on obsession, but she couldn't help it. The allure was too strong, the potential too great.

As the night wore on, the group grew weary but resolute. They had a long road ahead of them, filled with dangers and uncertainties. But together, they were determined to uncover the truth and face whatever challenges lay in their path.

The alliance between Gryffindor and Slytherin was tenuous, built on mutual need and a shared goal. But it was also a sign of the lengths they were willing to go to unravel the mystery of the Chamber of Secrets. And as the whispers in the walls grew louder, more insistent, they knew that their journey was only just beginning.

As they packed up their books and prepared to leave the library, Gwendolyn looked at her newfound allies with a mixture of curiosity and anticipation. "Remember, we have to stay focused. The Chamber holds the answers we seek. And we will find them."

Harry, Ron, and Hermione nodded, their expressions serious. The path ahead was fraught with danger, but they were ready to face it together. And with Gwendolyn's unique insight and determination, they knew they had a fighting chance.

The Chamber of Secrets was a dark mystery waiting to be unraveled, and they were determined to uncover its secrets. The whispers in the walls were growing louder, more urgent, and they knew that the true challenge was yet to come.

-----

As Harry, Ron, and Hermione made their way back to the Gryffindor common room, their minds were buzzing with the evening's revelations. The flickering torches cast long shadows on the walls, and the cold air of the castle seemed to seep into their bones. They walked in silence, each lost in their own thoughts.

Finally, Hermione broke the silence. "She's definitely knowledgeable, but there's something off about her. The way she talks about the Chamber, the power... It's unsettling."

Harry nodded, his brow furrowed. "I know. She seems almost... excited by it. Like she's fascinated by the danger."

Ron, walking beside them, sighed heavily. "She's mad, that's for sure. But she knows things we don't. We need her, even if it feels wrong."

Hermione glanced at Ron, her expression serious. "We have to be careful, Ron. Gwendolyn's information is valuable, but we can't let her obsession lead us into danger. We have to stay focused on finding the Chamber and stopping the attacks."

Harry stopped and turned to face his friends, his eyes determined. "Gwendolyn might be unpredictable, but we have to work with what we have. The Chamber of Secrets is real, and if we don't figure this out, more people could get hurt."

Ron ran a hand through his hair, looking frustrated. "I get that, Harry. I do. But how do we know we can trust her? What if she's leading us into a trap?"

Hermione placed a reassuring hand on Ron's shoulder. "We don't know, Ron. But right now, she's our best lead. We have to stay vigilant and watch her closely. If we sense any danger, we'll deal with it."

Harry sighed, the weight of responsibility heavy on his shoulders. "We'll keep an eye on her. But for now, let's focus on what we can do. We need to find more information about the Chamber and the basilisk. Maybe we can find something in the restricted section."

As they continued their walk, the tension between them eased slightly. The sense of purpose and determination grew stronger with each step. They knew they had to rely on each other and their combined strengths to navigate the treacherous path ahead.

When they finally reached the portrait of the Fat Lady, Harry spoke the password, "Caput Draconis," and they climbed through the portrait hole into the warm, familiar embrace of the Gryffindor common room. The fire crackled invitingly, and a few late-night students glanced up at their arrival before returning to their books and games.

The trio settled into their favorite armchairs by the fire, the familiar setting providing a sense of comfort and normalcy. Hermione pulled out her notebook and began jotting down everything they had discussed with Gwendolyn, her mind already working on a plan of action.

Ron stretched out, his eyes half-closed. "So, what's the plan for tomorrow? Do we go back to the library?"

Hermione nodded, her pen scratching across the paper. "Yes. We need to find out more about the Chamber's history and any records of Parselmouths. And we need to look into basilisks—how to recognize them and, more importantly, how to protect ourselves from them."

Harry stared into the flames, his mind drifting back to Gwendolyn's intense gaze and her unsettling excitement. "We also need to keep an eye on Gwendolyn. She might know more than she's letting on. If she really has heard whispers and understands Parseltongue, she could be crucial in finding the Chamber."

Ron groaned. "Great. More time with the Slytherin. Just what I wanted."

Hermione shot him a look. "We have to put aside our differences, Ron. This is bigger than house rivalries. We're dealing with a serious threat."

Ron sighed again but nodded. "Yeah, yeah. I know. It's just... she gives me the creeps."

Harry managed a small smile. "She's not exactly easy to get along with, but we need her. We'll just have to be careful."

Hermione finished her notes and closed her notebook with a determined snap. "Alright. Tomorrow, we hit the library and start digging. The sooner we find answers, the sooner we can stop whatever's happening."

The trio sat in silence for a moment, each lost in their own thoughts. The path ahead was uncertain, fraught with danger and unknowns. But they had faced challenges before, and they would face this one together.
