Chapter 49 - Ch:49

As the group trudged deeper into the sewers, their footsteps echoed off the damp, grimy walls. The darkness was nearly absolute, the only sound the dripping of water and the shuffling of their feet. Fay squinted into the blackness, her hands stretched out in front of her to avoid walking into anything.

"Umm, Raika, we can't see a thing down here," Fay said, her voice tinged with nervousness.

Raika stopped in her tracks, turning back to the group with an apologetic smile. "Oh, I totally forgot. I can see in the dark with my built-in night vision. Sorry about that!"

The team let out a collective groan, and Fay chuckled despite herself. "Well, it's nice to know at least one of us can see where we're going."

Katsuya snorted. "Next time, maybe share that little detail before we trip over each other."

Nana giggled, "Yeah, Raika, we don't all come with built-in headlights!"

Raika laughed along, her eyes glinting with a soft green glow as her night vision activated. She then stretched out her hand, and a bright light glowed from her palm, illuminating the dark sewer.

Nana and Fay's eyes widened in awe. "Wow, we can see now! It's so bright!" Fay exclaimed.

Just as they started to move forward, Nana suddenly froze and pointed, her face contorting in disgust. "Eww, what is that? Is that a rat?" She squealed, sprinting over to Katsuya and gripping his arm tightly. "A rat! A rat!"

The rest of the group burst into laughter, the sound echoing off the sewer walls. Even Raika chuckled, her hand still glowing brightly. Katsuya patted Nana's hand, trying to calm her down while suppressing his own laughter.

"Don't worry, Nana," Katsuya said, grinning. "It's just a rat. They won't bite... much."

Nana shot him a glare, but her expression softened as she joined in the laughter, albeit reluctantly. The group's spirits lifted as they continued their journey, the light from Raika's hand leading the way and banishing the darkness around them.

Raika glanced at her team and raised an eyebrow. "I've been wondering, guys. Why didn't any of you bring a flashlight?"

They all started whistling, looking up at the ceiling as if it were the most fascinating thing in the world. Raika crossed her arms, a smirk playing on her lips.

Fay smiled sheepishly. "Ah, haha, we forgot because of our excitement."

Lay nodded, rubbing the back of his neck. "Me too. I forgot to bring one because of... my personal problem."

Nana chimed in, shrugging. "I thought the sewers would be bright."

Katsuya laughed, shaking his head. "Same here. Guess we all had the same idea."

Raika chuckled and shook her head, her glowing hand casting playful shadows on the walls. "Well, at least now we know. Let's stay focused and stick together, okay?"

The group nodded, their spirits lightened by the humorous moment as they continued their journey through the dimly lit sewers.

Raika glanced around the dim, grimy surroundings and mused aloud, "Hey, I've been wondering. With all the advanced technology we have, why is this place still so outdated?"

Fay replied, shrugging, "It's because the sewers have been in working condition for many years. No need to upgrade what's already functional."

Raika nodded thoughtfully. "Makes sense. I guess not everything needs a high-tech overhaul."

Nana chuckled. "Yeah, but a few lights here and there wouldn't hurt."

The team shared a laugh, the sound echoing through the old tunnels, their camaraderie easing the tension of the mission.

Raika paused and said, "I think I need to use the nanomachines."

The team looked puzzled. "Nano what?" Fay asked.

"You'll see," Raika replied with a smile. She reached into her dimensional pocket, grabbed a handful of nanomachines, and spread them like dust. The tiny machines flew like fireflies, spreading far and wide and glowing softly like bioluminescent creatures.

Fay and Nana's eyes sparkled with wonder. "Woah!" they exclaimed in unison.

"Impressed?" Raika asked, grinning.

Katsuya nodded. "You never cease to amaze me, Raika."

Lay watched in silent wonder, his eyes wide and speechless. The glowing nanomachines lit up the sewers, creating an almost magical atmosphere as they continued their mission.

As they continued their investigation, they looked from side to side, checking every pathway of the sewers. Nana shivered slightly and said, "I can't believe it's still creepy even with the lights from your nanomachines, Raika."

Raika nodded, her eyes scanning the dark corners. "Yeah, me too. It's eerie down here, even with the glow."

The dim light from the nanomachines cast long shadows, creating an unsettling atmosphere. The deeper they went, the more the silence and the occasional distant drip of water seemed to amplify the sense of foreboding. The team stayed close together, their senses heightened as they ventured further into the depths of the sewers.

As they walked, Fay broke the silence. "Umm, Raika, I've been wondering why you didn't tell us you were part cyborg. You look like a human to me."

Raika sighed. "Actually, I'm 98% human in this second form."

Everyone stopped in their tracks, eyes wide. "What? But how on earth did you hide your functionalities?" Fay asked, bewildered.

Raika smirked. "They're hidden in my brain."

They all laughed, thinking it was a joke. "What a funny joke, Raika," Fay chuckled.

"No, it's not a joke," Raika said, her expression serious. She held out her hand, and an energy saber materialized, humming with power.

Lay and Katsuya's eyes widened in astonishment. "Impossible! It's like magic," Katsuya breathed.

"Me too," Lay muttered, still in shock.

Fay, still curious, pressed on. "It still doesn't answer the question, Raika. Why didn't you tell us?"

Raika's gaze softened. "Because if you all knew I was a cyborg back then, I might have been killed."

Nana gently tapped Raika's shoulder. "No way. We are your friends. We would never do that to you."

"Yeah," Fay agreed, nodding. "We're here for you."

Katsuya added, "It might have been a misunderstanding at first, but I accept you, Raika."

Lay remained quiet, absorbing everything, but the camaraderie in the group was clear. Raika felt a surge of gratitude, knowing she could rely on them.

Raika suddenly stopped in her tracks, her arms spreading wide to halt the group. "Hold on," she whispered, her eyes narrowing. "There's something big and mechanical up ahead."

Her interface chimed in, displaying a warning. "Warning, warning: Unknown entity detected up ahead. Please proceed with caution."

Raika turned to her team, her expression serious. "Guys, it's better if we fall back."

Fay's eyes darted nervously. "Are you sure, Raika?"

"Absolutely," Raika confirmed. "We can't risk a confrontation without knowing what we're dealing with. Stay close, and let's retreat slowly."

Nana clutched Katsuya's arm, her face pale. "I knew this place was creepy."

The team began to backtrack cautiously, the eerie glow of the nano machines casting long shadows on the sewer walls. The atmosphere was tense, each step echoing ominously in the dark, dank tunnel.

Suddenly, a metallic voice echoed through the tunnel, sending chills down their spines. "Nearby life forms detected. Capturing them in motion."

Red glowing eyes flickered to life in the darkness, fixing on the team.

Raika's heart pounded as she shouted, "Run!"

The team sprinted back the way they came, their footsteps splashing through the murky water. The sound of mechanical gears and heavy footsteps grew louder behind them, the unknown entity giving chase. Nana clung to Katsuya's arm, Fay kept glancing over her shoulder, and Lay's expression was one of grim determination.

Raika's mind raced as she led the way. "Stay together! Don't look back!"

As they sprinted through the dark, grimy sewer, Raika skidded to a halt. "We can't make it. You go first, guys!"

Fay and Nana's eyes widened in horror. "Raika, no!" they shouted in unison.

Katsuya, with a firm grip, pulled Nana forward, while Lay quickly grasped Fay's arm. "She can do it!" Lay urged as they continued to flee.

Raika stood resolute, her eyes determined. "I'll hold them off. Just get out of here and find help!"

With a final, pained glance, Raika turned and faced the encroaching mechanical beast. The monstrous entity's red eyes glowed menacingly as it advanced. As her friends disappeared into the distance, Raika braced herself for the confrontation, her heart pounding with a mixture of fear and resolve.

Raika's eyes narrowed as she faced the towering monstrosity. With a determined breath, she called out, "Phailax sword, activate!" She reached for her hairpin, the Phailax emblem glinting ominously in the dim light. Tossing it high into the air, the pin began to shimmer and expand, transforming into a massive, gleaming sword.

As the Phailax sword materialized in her grasp, Raika caught it deftly, its weight settling comfortably in her hands. The mechanical beast roared, its red eyes blazing as it swung one of its colossal, sharp-clawed arms toward her. The air crackled with tension as the claw descended, its edge glinting with deadly intent.

Raika met the attack head-on, bringing Phailax's sword up in a powerful block. The impact was explosive, sending a shower of sparks cascading around them. The force of the collision resonated through her, her stance wide and firm as she struggled to hold her ground. The monstrous arm was relentless, pressing forward with unyielding strength. Raika's muscles tensed, her arms quaking under the intense pressure of the beast's attack.

Her grip tightened around the sword's hilt as she maneuvered to counter the onslaught. Each clash of metal against metal was accompanied by a blinding burst of light, the sparks illuminating the darkened sewer like fleeting stars. The metallic screeching of the sword meeting the beast's claws echoed through the tunnels, creating a symphony of chaos and defiance.

Raika's determination was palpable, her face a mask of fierce concentration as she channeled all her energy into the defense. The Phailax sword glowed with a brilliant, ethereal light, reflecting her unwavering resolve as she faced the monstrous adversary.

The mechanical beast roared as it swung its massive claws again, the air humming with the force of its attack. Raika, anticipating the move, leaped into action. She executed a flawless backflip, her body twisting gracefully through the air while gripping the Phailax sword with precision.

As she descended, Raika's eyes gleamed with determination. She targeted the beast's feet, slashing with a swift, powerful strike. The impact was dramatic—sparks erupted from the point of contact, and the mechanical giant staggered, its footing unstable. With a groaning screech, the beast skidded backward, crashing violently into the wall with a deafening thud. Debris and dust exploded around the impact site, adding to the chaotic scene.

Raika landed smoothly on her feet, her eyes flickering with an intense, focused light. The Phailax sword's radiant glow cast sharp shadows on her determined face. The voice of Phailax echoed in her mind, a cool, calm presence amidst the turmoil.

"Are you okay, Master?" Phailax's voice in her thoughts was laced with concern.

Raika responded swiftly, her mind steady despite the adrenaline pumping through her veins. "I'm okay. Thanks for asking."

Phailax's voice continued, a note of urgency creeping in. "This monster is a dangerous type. Be careful."

Raika nodded, even though Phailax couldn't see her. She adjusted her stance, preparing for the beast's inevitable retaliation. The air crackled with the tension of the battle, every movement and clash magnified by the dim, flickering lights of the sewer.
