Hannah woke up surrounded by something warm and wet pressing in on her from all sides. The sensation was surprisingly pleasant, so much so that she wanted to slip back into unconsciousness to enjoy it longer. As the warmth began to dissipate, however, Hannah suddenly realized that she wasn't really breathing. She had the air she needed somehow, though. What was going on? Her mind cleared as she focused on her body's sensations to try and figure it out. Her lungs were barely moving, yet they were filled with all the air she needed through… her skin?! Was that right? Surely not, that's impossible! Yet… that had to be it. Weird.
With a jolt, Hannah remembered her encounter with Dokjin. What on Earth had happened to him? None of the aliens they had run into over the years were capable of doing whatever it was that had been done to his chest, and aside from that concerning development, how was he even alive with a hole that big in his torso? And why had he attacked her? Was he even Dokjin the Hero anymore? Something very strange was going on and she had a feeling it was dangerous. Just like everything had been, these last several years.
So, back to her current situation, where was she? Wiggling around, she found that she was floating in some sort of enclosure filled with a semi-viscous liquid. She opened her eyes and found there was no light whatsoever. Great, she thought, how am I supposed to get out?
With that, she noticed something else. Something smelled(?) delicious. She couldn't really smell, since she was in liquid, but she could tell somehow that it did. Her stomach announced its hunger with a pang like she'd never known before, and instinct took over. She was surrounded by food. Lukewarm, wet, delicious, food. She eagerly drank huge gulps of the liquid, clawing at her surroundings to get a grip. Once the liquid no longer caused her to float, she buried her face in the wall and took as big of a bite of it as she could manage, teeth struggling for purchase at first but eventually winning. She swallowed the chunk of the wall whole as the liquid began to trickle out of the opening. Still dark. But it didn't matter to her, as her stomach's absolute demand had her full attention now. What a delicious enclosure she had been in, she thought, mildly curious about what it was that she was even eating. Well, that didn't matter either. It tasted divine and filled her stomach. When was the last time she'd eaten something so good? A few decades ago, before the Invasion began? Wow, it had been so long. That made her throw herself even more savagely at the enclosure, which was now almost gone. When would she get the chance to eat something like this again? It would surely go bad soon, as everything did. She should enjoy whatever this was while it lasted.
Finishing up her original enclosure, she found herself sprawled inside a bigger one that was just as wet and smelled just as divine, so she began to gnaw at it as well. Wow, it was good. Whatever this new food was had a different texture and taste, one that she couldn't quite describe but enjoyed very much. The speed of her eating slowed down and she found herself feeling sluggish. Ah, that was a good meal. Tears of joy came to her eyes as she curled up next to the wall, which was colder than it had been earlier. When did that happen? Oh, well, she thought, as her thoughts drifted away into sleep, I guess I'll figure that out later.
Dreams of food filled her mind as she rested. Cakes and pastries hung like fruit from trees, which lined both sides of a beautifully paved stone pathway. Wait, was the pathway paved with biscuit cookies?! It was! And the trees themselves, looking more closely at them, Hannah found that their bark was flakes of chocolate and their leaves made of hard candy. Little wildflowers grew in abundance off the path, petals formed of taffy and greenery of entwining rope candies. A field of green cotton candy existed instead of grass, and nearby, a steaming steak stood propped up by meat skewers in each corner, forming a shade structure. In the shade of the miraculously not-dripping steak, an elegant round table made of shaped hard breads and a huge, plain hard-cooked pizza crust supported a scrumptious-looking display of even more food. Entranced, Hannah sat on the chip chair, which immediately broke under her weight. She laughed at herself for choosing that one. Getting up, she broke off a piece of the chip and found it was her favorite flavor, sour cream and onion. Delicious!
She crossed to the other chair, which was made of solid white bread. This one supported her weight just fine. Turning her gaze to the display of food on the food table (she was amused at her own humor, a food table made of food! haha), she was finally able to appreciate the beauty of the display. A tower of delicious appetizers, entrees, and side dishes stood before her, at least three feet tall, and absolutely packed with food. There were several kinds of meats, soups, salads, and desserts, all arranged in a beautiful spiral pattern that wound around the conical tower to the top.
Hannah stared in awe at the sight, tears coming to her eyes. Everything in front of her (and all the scenery) was foods she hadn't seen in years. Hot, fresh meals prepared using modern technology had become a luxury after the Invasion began, since using electricity drew the attention of the Aliens. She, and everyone else, had been subsisting on raw vegetables and whatever breads and meats could be prepared using fires. This sight was an impossible miracle. It brought a rush of nostalgia and bittersweet joy, filling her with longing for a world that was long gone.
