Chapter 13 - The Woods Again?

–(Scott)–

Stiles does not know when to shut up, was my first thought when the two equally buff people closed the door on us. The guy next to Mark must be his guardian since they seemed friendly with each other. Mark looked truly relaxed and with his guard down.

"Is it just me, or did he get taller and bigger?" Stiles said.

"You know, now that I think about it, he did. But maybe we're just sleep-deprived; it's midnight after all. I wanted to get a full night's sleep since we have tryouts on the first day back tomorrow, but someone had to drag me out of bed…"

"So anyway, I heard that they only found half of the body."

"And so you decided to drag me into the woods to find the other half?"

"Yeah! It'd be so cool."

"Yeah, cool…" I need more friends.

We got into his jeep and drove near the area where the search was happening. As we ventured into the forest, I found it increasingly difficult to breathe. Climbing a small hill, I asked Stiles to slow down, but he pushed on. I took out my inhaler and took a puff.

"Hey, who did you say they have in custody again?" I asked.

"Oh, they haven't caught anyone yet."

"So we're in the middle of the woods, in the middle of the night, looking for half a body with the murderer still on the loose?" Scratch that I need new friends. I should've just stayed home like Mark.

"See, when you put it like that, we probably shouldn't have gone into the woods."

Stiles eventually stopped and pushed me behind a tree. I was about to ask why when he covered my mouth with his hand, and I saw the reason: searchlights hit the area where we were standing.

Stiles dropped his flashlight in the spotlight.

"come out from behind the tree" one of the sheriffs calls and Stiles does.

"Hands in the air," one of the searchers said, and Stiles raised his hands.

"Stiles, is that you?" one of them called. "Ah damn, this one's mine. Is Scott with you? You two are practically attached at the hip."

"No, he wanted to get some sleep for practice tomorrow," he lied.

"Scott, come out! Scott?" he called out, but I stayed behind the tree.

I waited for what felt like forever for the search group to leave before I felt confident enough to move.

When they finally left, I started to make my way in the direction I thought was home. I heard a sound and froze.

I convinced myself it was nothing and continued on my way until I heard what sounded like a howl followed by movement in the bushes behind me. I quickened my pace and then started to sprint as fast as I could. I ended up in an open field.

I reached for my inhaler, but it wasn't in my pocket. I must've dropped it when I was running for my life. Great. As it got more difficult to breathe, I saw something slowly crouch in the field. It lunged at me, and I turned my body in a futile attempt to run. That's when I felt a searing pain and fell to the ground.

As my vision began to black out, I saw it run away. I saw two giant shadows, about 7 feet tall, making their way to me before I finally blacked out.

–(Mark)–

Can I catch a fucking break? It's 2:00 AM when James wakes me up because he's heard the howl of a werewolf on the hunt and wants us to check it out since there shouldn't be werewolves hunting in this area.

As I began to change clothes, he told me not to bother and to shift in the backyard. We set off toward where he heard the howl. As we neared the area, James picked up a scent and began to lead us to it.

When we reached it, we found the upper portion of a body. Great, more therapy, but I didn't really feel much. James and I heard someone running with labored breath. We headed off toward the sound. I caught a familiar scent… Scott's.

I picked up my pace, knowing that if something had Scott running, it couldn't be good. By the time I caught up to him, I saw a werewolf with red eyes throwing itself at Scott and biting his hip. It went for another attack but sensed us and turned before deciding it couldn't take us on. We cautiously approached Scott, who turned his head to us before passing out.

We shifted back, and I made sure he was still breathing.

"So… is he like one of us now?" I asked in a rarely calm tone, having just seen a friend attacked.

"If he survives the bite, yes, he will be a werewolf but not one of us. And the bite doesn't always make a werewolf; it can cause different supernaturals too."

"What do we do with him now?"

"We'll take him back to his house and leave him on his bed. The rest is for him to deal with if he survives."

"Will he be able to tell I'm a werewolf?"

"Yeah, he'll see that you smell different from people, but he'll probably think he's just imagining it."

"So that's it? No introducing him to the para world?"

"Hey, if you want to take that on, go ahead, but that alpha probably making plans for him now that we stopped him from killing. I say leave him be, and if he approaches you about it, just answer the basics and try not to get involved with his pack problems."

"Fine." I shifted back into a werewolf, placed Scott on my shoulder, and started running back to his home.

The window was luckily open. I couldn't fit in, so I shifted back into a human, dragged him in, and laid him on his bed. Would you look at that first time naked in someone's room and it's not for fooling around. I quickly placed the gauze I found in his room on his wound before crawling out and going back home to finally get some sleep. Tomorrow is going to be a long day.
