Chapter 31 - Chapter 31: A Promise of Truth

Meilin's mind was adrift in a sea of thoughts when Zhao Jingshen arrived to take her home. His presence, warm and comforting, instantly brought a smile to her face despite the weight of her thoughts.

"Ready to go, beautiful?" Zhao Jingshen's voice was soft, his eyes twinkling with affection as he helped her gather the rest of her things. His fingers brushed against hers, sending a familiar tingle up her arm.

"Almost," Meilin replied, her heart fluttering at his touch. She couldn't help but admire how handsome he looked, even in the harsh hospital lighting.

As they made their way to his car, Zhao Jingshen's hand found the small of her back, guiding her gently. The gesture, so natural and protective, made Meilin's guilt intensify. She needed to tell him everything, but not yet. Not when he was looking at her like that.

"I've got a surprise planned for dinner," ZhaoJingshen said as he opened the car door for her, his voice bubbling with excitement. "We need to celebrate your discharge and I think you're going to love it."

Jiang Meilin slid into the passenger seat, inhaling the familiar scent of Zhao Jingshen's cologne. Zhao Jingshen was driving them todayAs he got in beside her, she couldn't help but admire his profile - the strong jaw, the hint of stubble, the way his lips curved into a smile.

Neither of them noticed the sleek black car parked across the street, its tinted windows concealing Lian Fei and her nefarious plans.

As they drove, Meilin's phone buzzed with a message from Eight, warning her of their tail. She curved her lips into a smile, a mix of amusement and anticipation coursing through her.

Jingshen caught her looking at him and grinned. "You can take a picture, you know. It'll last longer," he teased, his voice low and playful.

Jiang Meilin's cheeks flushed, and she let out a soft laugh. "Maybe I will," she retorted, her eyes sparkling with mischief. She was a very carefree and open person, she was not usually shy, but there was something about Zhao Jingshen's voice that always sends her heart into overdrive, she had never fallen in love before but, God, She was hopelessly in love with this man. "I'm just trying to figure out where you're taking me for dinner."

"Oh?" Zhao Jingshen raised an eyebrow, a challenge in his voice. "Care to guess?"

When Meilin shook her head, he leaned in closer, his breath warm against her ear. "It's a surprise," he whispered, sending a shiver down her spine with his breath on her skin. "But I promise, it'll be worth the wait."

Their eyes met, and for a moment, the world outside faded away. Meilin found herself lost in Jingshen's gaze, her heart racing. Despite the secrets and dangers swirling around them, in this moment, all she wanted was to stay in this car with him, driving towards an unknown destination and an uncertain future.

As they drove through the city's twinkling lights, Jiang Meilin's heart raced with a mixture of affection and anxiety. She decided to test the waters, hoping to gauge Zhao Jingshen's reaction to her identity reveal.

"So," she began, her voice soft but tinged with playfulness, "what are you going to do about our tail?"

Zhao Jingshen's eyes flickered to the rearview mirror, his expression unchanging, she never ceases to suprise him. "Hmm?"

"You know we're being followed, right?" Jiang Meilin pressed, raising an eyebrow.

He held her gaze for a moment, a small smile playing at the corners of his mouth. "The most important question is, how did you know?"

Meilin shifted in her seat, suddenly aware of how perceptive Jingshen was. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out.

Sensing her discomfort, Zhao Jingshen's expression softened. "You don't have to tell me now if you're not ready," he said gently. "I can wait... No matter how long it takes."

His words hung in the air between them, heavy with unspoken meaning. Meilin felt a lump form in her throat, overwhelmed by his patience and understanding.

"It's not that I don't want to tell you, Jingshen," she finally managed, her voice barely above a whisper. "It's just... I don't even know where to begin." She paused, gathering her courage. "And... I'm afraid of how you might react."

Zhao Jingshen reached over, taking her hand in his. The warmth of his touch had a calming effect on her. "There's no rush," he assured her, his thumb tracing soothing circles on her skin. "Whatever it is, whoever you are, it won't change a thing, Meilin. Besides, I'm also scared you might run away the more you find out about me."

"Me run away, Not a chance." Meilin scoffed "I've got three words for you, DREAM ON, BROTHER."

Zhao Jingshen's laughter echoed in the car, he had initially been scared if involving her in his dangerous life, but it seems, there was nothing to it tgat she couldn't handle.

He took a deep breath, his eyes fixed on the road ahead. "You know! I've fallen so deeply in love with you that I'd follow you to hell itself if you asked me to."

Meilin's breath caught in her throat, stunned by the raw emotion in his voice. "Jingshen, I—"

"Shh," he said softly, briefly placing a finger to her lips. "You don't have to say anything now. To be honest, I've never really been in love before. Even with Lian Fei... it was just an arrangement. What I'm trying to say is, I'm new to this too. These feelings... they're overwhelming, but in the best possible way."

Tears pricked at the corners of Meilin's eyes. She felt simultaneously elated and guilty, knowing the depth of his feelings while still harbouring her secrets.

"How about this," she suggested, her voice trembling slightly. "I'll tell you one thing about me each day until I'm ready to share my whole story. Would that be okay?"

Jingshen's face lit up with a warm smile. "That sounds perfect to me. I'll do the same."

"As for the car following us," he added, his tone reassuring, "Its been taken care of. Don't worry."

Meilin nodded, feeling a weight lift from her shoulders. "Thank you, Jingshen. For everything."

They drove in comfortable silence for a few moments, the city lights casting a soft glow over their faces. Meilin watched Jingshen's profile, marveling at how this man had so quickly become her anchor.

"I'll tell you one thing about myself after dinner," she said suddenly, feeling a surge of courage. "What do you think?"

Jingshen glanced at her, his eyes shining with affection. "I'd be honored," he replied, his voice filled with genuine warmth.

As they neared their destination, Meilin realized that regardless of her past or the dangers that lurked in the shadows, she had found something rare and precious in Zhao Jingshen. His unwavering support and the depth of his feelings were a balm to her troubled soul.

For Zhao Jingshen, the realization of how deeply he had fallen struck him anew. He knew, with absolute certainty, that he would stand by Meilin no matter what secrets she revealed. In his world of calculated risks and strategic alliances, she had become the one unpredictable variable he couldn't live without.

As they pulled up to the restaurant, both Meilin and Jingshen felt a shift in their relationship. Whatever challenges lay ahead, they would face them together, bound by a love that had blossomed in the most unexpected of circumstances.
