Vesna's eyes fluttered open, adjusting to the darkness that enveloped the room. A hint of something cold and unfamiliar lurked in her gaze, a shadow that didn't belong in her usually warm expression.
Beside her, Ziyan slept peacefully, his body a comforting warmth against her side. His arm draped heavily across her stomach, his warm breath tickling her shoulder. As if sensing she was awake, Ziyan unconsciously tightened his embrace, nuzzling his face into the crook of her neck.
Vesna turned her head, her eyes drawn to the glass balcony door left slightly ajar. Through the opening, she could see the full moon hanging high in the inky black sky. Its pale, silvery light spilled into the room, creating long shadows that danced across the floor and walls. A soft breeze stirred the gossamer curtains, their gentle rustling barely audible over the symphony of crickets and the occasional hoot of a distant owl.
