Chapter 54 - 54

The situation for the newly formed team did not get off to a good start as they started to do very easy tasks together.

It always seemed like the trio was doing most of the work while Grill sat back rarely ever participating.

The missions they went on were mostly to track down and capture high-value targets that could potentially aid SIT and gain more rare materials.

SIT was intent on expanding its power further so that it could combat ALCHEMI in the future.

Some of the missions that were given did not seem acceptable for Rayne and Hogan to carry out.

There were certain lines that they did not cross no matter what and the new SIT had done many things that made them uncomfortable.

One mission that had been given was to capture several scientists and mages who could aid the research and development of SIT.

The most recent location that had to be attacked was a magic kindergarten branch where a target had to be captured.

Since the children there had the potential for magic, they too were kidnapped by the team of four.

Doing such things brought back painful memories of the past of Rayne and Hogan.

They saw themselves as becoming hypocrites who were doing the kind of things that had been forced upon them.

They wanted to abandon SIT and destroy it but they lacked the power to do so.

They helped create something that was what they had been aiming to combat against.

Their goal was no longer a noble one and they felt great shame every time they carried out a task.

Grill was making a report to the higher-ups while Lexi remained with them both.

Lexi sighed looking at them. "Hey... I never expected this to happen so do not blame me. If you want to fix things then either grit your teeth and endure or risk your lives to get out of this mess."

She had faced many situations where her life was at stake and she knew about the risks involved in making the slightest decision.

Hogan glared at her. "I cannot do this anymore..."

Rayne looked disheartened. "Me neither. What can we do?"

Lexi sighed. "What they least expect of us."
