Chapter 4 - A Glimpse of Lirien

Arin's heart pounded in his chest as he gazed at Lirien. He felt a strange sense of unease, as if he was staring into the eyes of a stranger. Lirien's gaze was piercing, and for a moment, Arin wondered if she could see the turmoil brewing inside him.

Lirien's expression changed from surprise to curiosity, and she began to walk towards them. Ryker stepped forward, his hand on the hilt of his sword.

"Wait," Arin said, holding up a hand. "I mean no harm, Princess."

Lirien halted, her eyes never leaving Arin's face. "And who might you be?" she asked, her voice like a gentle breeze.

Arin took a deep breath. "I am Prince Arin of Eridoria. I... I was curious about you."

Lirien's gaze narrowed. "Why would you be curious about me?"

Arin hesitated, unsure of how much to reveal. But something about Lirien's directness put him at ease. "I'm to marry you, Princess. I want to know what kind of woman I'm getting myself into."

Lirien's expression turned thoughtful. "You want to know what kind of woman I am?"

Arin nodded. "Yes. Are you kind? Are you cruel? Are you... happy?"

Lirien's laughter was like music, and Arin felt his tension ease. "I am many things, Prince Arin. But happiness is not one of them. At least, not recently."

Their conversation was interrupted by the sound of approaching footsteps. A group of El'gorothian guardsmen appeared, their faces stern.

"Lirien, it's time for us to return to the palace," one of them said.

Lirien's eyes flicked towards Arin before returning to the guardsman. "Of course, my lord. Prince Arin, it was... enlightening speaking with you."

Arin felt a pang of disappointment as Lirien turned to leave. But then she paused and looked back at him.

"Meet me in the old oak grove at midnight, Prince Arin. Come alone."

With that, she disappeared into the crowd, leaving Arin feeling stunned and confused.

What do you think is happening next?
