Chereads / The Black Opal / Chapter 4 - A welcome addition

Chapter 4 - A welcome addition

At present Bayn and Papalymo sat together in the dining room where Lyse had placed their food earlier.

After the abrupt welcome Lyse had given Bayn, Yda went upstairs leaving the pair alone.

Recovering from his stupor the lalafell dug in a mighty pretzel the size of his skeleton.

Though to his chagrin the former Imperial Soldier sat at his side of the table staring at his lap.

"You look like a child caught sneaking sweets before supper." Papalymo said sarcastically.

Bayn fidgeted but gave no verbal response.

Papalymo let out a sigh of annoyance before returning to his pretzel.

Tried as he might though the lalafell could not leave the awkward silence for long.

"If it's Yda you're worried about don't. Lyse's reaction expected as it was, isn't unsalvagable. She won't be kicking you out anytime soon. Yda pulled too many strings to get you here to send you back now." Papalymo explained before returning to his pretzel.

Uneasy as the half-garlean felt, he could find no words to reply. It was not until footsteps could be heard from the stairway did Bayn finally lift his head up. Yda entered the dining room looking tense, but no worse for wear.

"Are you well?" Papalymo asked.

"As can be-Oh!" Yda took in the aroma of all the bags on the table rushed to the table with excitement inspecting all the bags.

"Take your fill, Lyse only bought everything they had at the Last Stand." Papalymo said.

"Of course!" Yda said stuffing a burger in her mouth.

Papalymo proceeded to engulf another pretzel, this one bigger than the last one.

The pair ate in tandem taking part in multiple delicacies across the table.

Bayn however only sat in silence, peaking behind him.

"What's wrong, Bayn? There's plenty to go around." Yda said.

Bayn frowned as he fidgeted towards Yda.

"What about your sister?" He asked.

"Oh don't worry she'll be too hungry to stay stubborn for long." Yda said, non-chalantly.

Bayn peaked back at the stairway and his frown only grew.

Before he could speak, Yda began putting out food in front of him and Bayn couldn't find his voice. In the corner of his eye, he saw a pretzel no smaller than the ones Papalymo consumed. While it didn't look like the lalafell had moved, his intentions were clear.

With no way to object, Bayn slowly ate the feast at their behest, sampling, sandwiches, hamburgers, oddly shaped and sized pretzels, and some kind of bread roll he had never seen before.

"(If dad could see this…)" Bayn thought as he began to sample the giant pretzels, much to Yda's delight.

At some point, Bayn could feel a burning sensation at his back. One is obvious to Yda and Papalymo, but they gave no acknowledgement to it.

A few minutes more the presence got closer…and bitter.

Bayn looked at Yda and Papalymo. The pair said nothing.

Bayn reluctantly mimicked their actions and continued to eat.

Lyse knelt at the side entrance to the dining room, glaring holes into Bayn.

Lyse knelt there for what seemed like an eternity, before finally moving closer.

As her gaze only intensified, Bayn could feel his skull near-catch fire as Lyse was only an inch from his back.

To his relief the intensity died down as she continued to the empty seat next to Yda.

Bayn expected them to say something, but without so much as a word Lyse began digging in into the food while maintaining her animosity.

The young blonde snarled with every bite and drank bitterly.

The quartet ate in relative peace, feasting away till the sun went down.

Yda let out a satisfied sigh, rubbing her belly with a smile on her face.

A weary Papalymo slumped in his chair, head tilted sideways.

Lyse drank down the last of her glass, as she leaned backward, and kicked her head back to the ceiling with a loud yawn.

Bayn ate the last bite of his hamburger and with a long sigh did the same.

The table was cleared. Every last bit.

"That was a wonderful feast." Yda said graciously.

"That was dreadful..." Papalymo muttered grimly.

Bayn yawned and slowly slumped in his chair.

Yda smiled and put an arm around the half-garlean and her sister, pulling them to her.

"There's no better way to get acquainted!" Yda said. Lyse sneered silently, while Bayn started to nod off. "Papalymo we're going to show Bein his room." Yda said. Much to Lyse's chagrin.

"Very good then." Papalymo slurred his words as he lost consciousness, followed by a belch.

Bayn tired as he was, offered no resistance as Yda led him upstairs with Lyse in tow. Quiet as she was she never took her eyes off Bayn.

As Yda opened the door, and pulled Bayn inside as Lyse stayed outside the doorway. It was a pretty sizable room for a person or two. Bedding that was unused but not dusty. A cabinet and desk in the corner, and what Bayn could only guess was a lamp at the edge. The windows were closed at present.

"Hope you find it to your liking. If you need anything and we are not around you can go to Lyse the next room down." Yda said as a scowl erupted on Lyse. "Otherwise, Papalymo and I are in the room farthest down. After dragging him up from his coma." Yda muttered.

"I can get him, you can go ahead and rest while I clear the table." Lyse said.

"Thank you. You, okay then Bayn?" Yda asked.

"Yeah...thank you." Bayn said quietly admiring the room.

"Take the time to get comfortable, Lyse is right next door if you need anything." said Yda, as she caressed his shoulder before exiting. She thanked her sister again, ignoring the scowl planted on her face.

As Lyse looked back into the room watching the boy just stand there, she closed the door with a sneer.

Then silence.

Not two days ago was Bayn, formerly Rem, Slobasch was a prospected Pilus among the XIVth legions ranks. Respect, comrades, and loyalty were all his. A better life for him and his father.

Yet so easily did this boy throw it to the wayside to save the life of one woman.

To that effect; finally home after months of aiding her homeland, the woman in question now rested in her bed, acknowledging the burdens she had placed on her loved ones knowing she forever owed her life to another. For Yda Hext bringing her saviour into her home was the natural thing to do.

Her Lalafel partner seemed over-content and gut-wrenched on the outside. Inside, he was full of as much turmoil as his Hyuran companion and apprehensive about their guest to say the least. Only among family and friends would you ever catch Papalymo Tatalymo stuffing his feelings with stuffed pretzels.

As for the younger sister, she grabbed the Lalafel, tossed him into the same room as her sister, and began clearing the plates off the dinner table. Her sisters' words rang loud in her mind still.

If Bayn wasn't part Garlean would she be treating him as she did now?

Thinking on it only made her angrier. As she washed them off Lyse nearly broke a corner off a plate and slouched over the counter. Yet, that begs the question.

Lyse in her own words doesn't believe in anything such as half-garleans.

Lyse Hext had spent over half her life having Garleans take from her, family, country, home after home. She nearly lost her sister, just like everything else, and who did she have to thank? An imperial saved her idol, the only blood family that remained for her.

If nothing like half-garleans existed that would be a full-blooded garlean saved Yda, a thought she found more asinine, fueling her frustration.

Bayn taking in all he had done could only let himself fall into the bed given to him. There was much to process.

When he saved Yda it was triggered by a vision of her life with a child.

Yet there was no child to be found here.

"(Does her daughter not live with her?)" These were Bayns last thoughts before drifting to sleep.
