Angel's eyes dropped, her voice barely audible. "I...I don't know, Anita. I care about you, I love you, but...Rachel and I, we have a history. A complicated one."
Anita's heart felt like it was shattering into a million pieces. "A history? You call that a history? You're still in love with her, aren't you?"
Angel's nod was almost imperceptible, but it was enough to confirm Anita's worst fears.
"I thought we had something real, Angel," Anita said, her voice cracking with emotion. "But it was all a lie, wasn't it? You were just using me to get over Rachel."
Angel's eyes snapped up, her face anguished. "No, Anita, that's not true. I swear, my feelings for you are real. But...I can't deny what I feel for Rachel either."
Anita's laughter was bitter. "You can't deny it? You're still in love with her, Angel. And I'm just a distraction, a placeholder until you can figure out your feelings for her."
The truth was like a knife to Anita's heart. She knew she had to let Angel go, no matter how much it hurt.
