Chapter 36 - Chapter Thirty-Six: Descent into Oblivion

Evelyn's hand was slipping from my grasp, the tendril of darkness coiling tighter around her leg, pulling her ever closer to the edge of the fissure. My heart raced, the weight of the situation pressing down on me like a physical force. The dark substance, now writhing and pulsing with a malevolent energy, seemed almost eager to claim us both.

Although I tried resisting.

"Hold on!" I shouted, my voice strained as I fought against the inhuman strength of the tendril. But Evelyn's eyes were wide with terror, her breath coming in panicked gasps.

"I— I can't!" she cried out, her voice trembling. "It's too strong!"

The fissure beneath us rumbled, the darkness within it seeming to beckon, like an abyss that promised nothing but eternal despair. The statue continued to shift, its stone form cracking and splintering as it began to take on a new, more grotesque shape. The air was thick with the stench of decay, and the whispers in my mind were a deafening roar.

I tightened my grip on Evelyn's hand, gritting my teeth as I pulled with all my strength. "You're not going anywhere!" I growled, determined to keep her from being swallowed by the abyss. But the tendril was relentless, and my strength was beginning to wane.

Evelyn looked at me, tears streaming down her face, her voice barely more than a whisper. "If you don't let go, we'll both die. Please let go of my hand."

"No," I said, my voice firm despite the fear gnawing at my insides. "I won't let you go."

But even as I said the words, I knew the truth. The darkness was too strong, too powerful. It was only a matter of time before it claimed us both.

Just as I thought all hope was lost, the book—still floating above the fissure—began to glow with an intense, otherworldly light. The runes on the cover flared to life, and the dark substance recoiled as if in pain, its grip on Evelyn loosening just enough for her to scramble back towards me.

"Now!" I shouted, seizing the moment and pulling her free of the tendril's grasp. We stumbled back, gasping for breath as the dark substance thrashed and writhed, seemingly repelled by the light emanating from the book.

Evelyn's eyes were wide with shock as she looked at the book, now glowing brighter than ever. "What's happening?" she asked, her voice trembling.

"I don't know," I admitted, staring at the book in awe. "But it's our chance. We have to destroy it."

The statue let out a furious roar, the sound reverberating through the chamber and shaking the very walls. The dark substance surged forward again, but this time it seemed almost hesitant, as if the light from the book was holding it back.

We didn't have much time.

"Let's go!" I urged, pulling Evelyn to her feet. We rushed towards the book, dodging the thrashing tendrils of darkness that still tried to snatch us up. The closer we got to the book, the more intense the light became, and I could feel the whispers in my mind growing fainter, their hold on me weakening.

The book hovered just above the edge of the fissure, the light it emitted creating a protective barrier that seemed to keep the darkness at bay. But as we approached, I could feel the malevolent energy around us growing stronger, the air thick with a sense of impending doom.

"How do we destroy it?" Evelyn asked, her voice filled with desperation. "What if we can't?"

"We have to try," I replied, though I had no idea how we were going to accomplish it. The book was the key to everything, but its power was beyond anything I had ever encountered. Simply touching it had nearly overwhelmed me before. But now, it was our only hope.

The statue's eyes flared with rage as we reached the book, its stone body shifting and cracking as it began to move towards us. The ground shook with each step it took, the sound like thunder in the enclosed space.

"We don't have much time," I said, reaching out towards the book. The moment my fingers brushed the cover, the light intensified, and the dark substance shrieked, recoiling from the fissure and retreating back into the shadows.

But the victory was short-lived. The statue let out another roar, this one filled with pain and fury, and the chamber began to collapse around us. Stone columns cracked and crumbled, the ceiling above us threatening to cave in. The fissure widened, the darkness within it churning violently, as if trying to break free.

Evelyn grabbed my arm, her eyes wide with fear. "We need to get out of here! Now!"

But I knew we couldn't leave—not yet. Not until the book was destroyed. I could feel its power, ancient and overwhelming, pulsing beneath my fingertips. It was like holding a storm in my hands, a force that could either save us or doom us all.

Taking a deep breath, I focused all my energy on the book, willing it to be destroyed. The light flared again, brighter than before, and I felt a surge of power coursing through me, connecting me to the very essence of the curse.

But then, without warning, the light dimmed, flickering as if struggling to maintain its strength. The whispers in my mind grew louder, more insistent, and I realized with a jolt of fear that the darkness was fighting back.

"We have to end this!" I shouted, my voice filled with determination. "We have to—"

Before I could finish my sentence, the ground beneath us gave way with a deafening crack, and we were suddenly falling, plummeting into the abyss below. I felt myself darkening out, although I tried my best to stay stable but it wasn't working.

The last thing I saw before the darkness consumed us was the book, glowing weakly as it tumbled down after us, the light flickering out just as the void swallowed us whole.
