Chapter 66 - Going to the organization.

Chance hurried back to the laboratory, his mind set on destroying the time machine he had poured his heart and soul into over the past four years. The gravity of his decision weighed heavily on him, but he knew it was the right thing to do. The machine was too powerful, too dangerous, and in the wrong hands, it could wreak unimaginable havoc. He couldn't allow it to be used by the Freemasons, a shadowy organization whose influence and reach far exceeded his worst fears.

As he approached the entrance to the lab, Chance had no idea that his every move had been under surveillance. The Freemasons had been watching him closely ever since his unexpected return from the Ming Dynasty. They had seen him search the library, they knew he had discovered the existence of their secret society, and they anticipated his next move. Unbeknownst to him, the lab was no longer a safe haven. The room where the time machine was housed had been staked out by the Freemasons, who were determined to take control of his invention.

The evening air was thick with tension as Chance walked into the dimly lit hallway of the lab. The fluorescent lights flickered above, casting eerie shadows on the walls. He took a deep breath, his determination steeling him for the task ahead. But as he reached the doorway to the main lab, a towering figure emerged from the shadows.

A man, clad entirely in black and standing at least 195 centimeters tall, blocked Chance's path. His face was obscured by a hood, and his eyes glinted with a menacing intensity. The man's presence was imposing, and the air seemed to grow colder around him.

"You're not going anywhere," the man growled, his voice deep and threatening.

Chance's heart raced. He knew he was in trouble, but he couldn't back down now. He attempted to sidestep the man, but his opponent was quick and powerful. With a swift, brutal movement, the man grabbed Chance by the arm and executed a perfect over-the-shoulder throw. Chance felt himself lifted off the ground and then crashing down hard onto the cold, unforgiving floor.

Pain shot through his body as he lay there, gasping for breath. "Ah, that hurts," Chance groaned, trying to push himself up. "I guess all those hours in the lab have made my bones stiff."

Chance struggled to his feet, only to be met with another comically powerful shove that sent him sprawling back onto the floor. He glanced up at the tall man, who looked as intimidating as a supervillain. Chance couldn't help but think how absurd it was—here he was, a physicist, not an action hero, trying to fight a giant in what felt like a scene from a low-budget action movie.

"Okay, okay, let's talk about this," Chance said, trying to buy time as he awkwardly crawled backwards. "I mean, I'm sure we can come to a reasonable—"

Before he could finish, the tall man grabbed him by the collar and hoisted him up with alarming ease. "Enough talking," the man growled, shaking Chance like a ragdoll. "You're coming with us."

Chance's feet dangled helplessly as he was carried across the room. "This is really unnecessary," he protested, his voice shaking. "I'm a scientist, not a wrestler!"

Just then, another figure appeared, holding a large, burlap sack. "You've got to be kidding me," Chance muttered, rolling his eyes. "A sack? Really? How cliché can you get?"

Chance barely had time to react before the sack was pulled over his head, and everything went dark. The rough material scratched against his face, and he struggled briefly, but his strength was waning. The last thing he heard before slipping into unconsciousness was the low, ominous laughter of his captors.

And the ring engraved with the emblem of the Freemasons—it was unmistakable. Chance's mind flashed back to the moment he had seen an identical ring on the professor's bookshelf. At the time, it had seemed inconsequential, but now the pieces were falling into place. The ring was not just an ornament; it was a symbol of allegiance to a secretive and powerful organization.

Chance had been bewitched by the aura of authority and mystery that surrounded the ring, and the realization sent a chill down his spine. He now found himself at the mercy of the very people who had been manipulating events from the shadows. Unbeknownst to him, he was being taken directly into the heart of that clandestine organization, where his fate would be decided by those who operated beyond the reach of ordinary men.
