Chapter 44 - Talking in the Moonlight

The garden was bathed in the soft glow of the setting sun, casting a golden hue over the tranquil scenery. Birds chirped gently in the background, and the fragrance of blooming flowers filled the air. Chance sat alone on a stone bench, his mind heavy with the burden of recent events and the weight of his unprecedented journey through time. The kingdom was safe, for now, but the cost had been high.

Suddenly, a rustle of silk broke the stillness, and Chance looked up to see the Western Princess, Rossy, approaching him. Her regal bearing and the subtle grace with which she moved were a stark contrast to the turbulent emotions swirling within him. As she drew nearer, she offered him a warm smile, one that seemed to chase away the shadows of his thoughts.

"May I join you?" Rossy asked, her voice soft and melodic.

"Of course," Chance replied, scooting over slightly to make room for her on the bench.

Rossy settled beside him, her dress flowing elegantly around her. For a moment, they simply sat there, side by side, absorbing the serene beauty of the garden. Then, she turned to him, her eyes reflecting the depth of her admiration.

"You were incredible today, Chance," she began, her voice filled with genuine praise. "Your bravery, your strategy... you saved the entire kingdom from the Crown Prince's tyranny. I have never seen anyone fight with such passion and determination."

Chance met her gaze, his heart warming at her words. Yet, a shadow of doubt flickered in his eyes. "Thank you, Rossy. But the cost was high. So many lives were lost today. I sometimes wonder if the price of victory is too steep."

Rossy placed a gentle hand on his arm, her touch both comforting and grounding. "Every great victory comes with sacrifices. It is the burden of those who lead. But you must not bear this weight alone. You have saved countless lives today, and for that, you deserve to be honored."

Chance sighed, his mind racing with thoughts he had long kept to himself. "There's something you should know, Rossy. Something that might change how you see me."

Intrigued, Rossy leaned in closer. "What is it, Chance?"

He took a deep breath, gathering his thoughts. "I am not from this time. I am a physicist from 500 years in the future. My journey here was the result of a scientific experiment gone wrong. Everything I have done, everything I have achieved... it was all because of an accident."

Rossy's eyes widened in surprise, but she didn't pull away. Instead, she listened intently, her expression one of unwavering belief. "Tell me more," she urged gently.

Chance nodded, grateful for her understanding. "In my time, science has advanced beyond anything you can imagine. We have machines that can fly, vehicles that can travel faster than the speed of sound, and devices that allow us to communicate with anyone, anywhere in the world, in an instant."

Rossy's eyes sparkled with fascination. "That sounds incredible. Please, continue."

"I was working on a project involving black holes and quantum mechanics," Chance explained, his voice taking on a passionate edge as he delved into the details. "We were attempting to understand the fundamental nature of the universe, to unlock the secrets of time and space. But something went wrong. There was an explosion, and I was thrown into a black hole."

He paused, his eyes distant as he recalled the moment that had changed his life forever. "When I awoke, I found myself here, in this time. It was disorienting, to say the least. I had to learn how to survive in a world so different from my own, to adapt to new challenges and new ways of thinking."

Rossy listened, enraptured by his tale. "And yet, you have done so much good here. You have used your knowledge and skills to help this kingdom in ways no one else could. That is truly remarkable."

Chance smiled, though it was tinged with sadness. "But there is a pattern, Rossy. Every woman who gets close to me meets a tragic end. It's as if my presence brings misfortune to those I care about. First, there was Keiko, then YoYo. Both were lost because of my actions, because of this journey through time."

Rossy's expression softened, her heart aching for him. "You cannot blame yourself for the cruelties of fate, Chance. You have done everything in your power to save and protect those you love. That is all anyone can ask for."

Chance shook his head, his eyes filled with a mixture of determination and sorrow. "I wish it were that simple. But I cannot ignore the pattern. And now, with you..."

He trailed off, unable to voice his fears. But Rossy understood. She placed her hand over his, her touch warm and reassuring. "I trust you, Chance. I believe in you. Whatever the future holds, I am willing to face it by your side."

Her words filled Chance with a sense of hope he hadn't felt in a long time. He looked into her eyes, seeing the sincerity and strength there. "Thank you, Rossy. Your faith means more to me than you can imagine."

For a moment, they sat in silence, the bond between them growing stronger. Then, Chance continued his story, sharing more about the world he came from. He spoke of towering skyscrapers that seemed to touch the sky, of computers that could process information in the blink of an eye, of medical advancements that had eradicated diseases once thought incurable.

Rossy listened with rapt attention, her mind painting vivid pictures of this futuristic world. "It all sounds so wondrous," she said softly. "To think that humanity could achieve so much."

Chance nodded, a wistful smile on his lips. "Yes, but with great advancements come great responsibilities. The potential for both creation and destruction is immense. It is a delicate balance, one that we must constantly strive to maintain."

Rossy squeezed his hand, her eyes filled with admiration. "And you, Chance, are someone who understands that balance. You have seen both the wonders and the perils of progress. That makes you a better leader, a better person."

Chance felt a warmth spread through him at her words. "I hope so, Rossy. I truly hope so."
