Chapter 23 - Short, simple and straightforward

He had just finished setting up her room. The room he made sure he was there to supervise because he hated mistakes. Especially when this was being prepared for someone special. Damon was more than kind enough to have some interior decorators from Hell help turned this massive space of his house into something that's fit for a queen. And so far, they did more than a good job as he observed from the shadows. It was just as he imagined, and the best part of all this is that it is the next room to his. They get to be together and at proximity just like he wanted.

If he read Hale's report correctly on her, she likes to read. So, he had something close to a standard library made just for her. Anything, he would do anything to make her anticipated stay in his house comfortable and luxurious. It's the least he could do for her.

They strolled down the hallway to his brother's office. His golden, gloved hands behind him as they entered the dark office. The decorators have long gone and everything was set. The only thing left was the selection letter to reach her as fast as possible so that she could be brought to him.

He sat on one of the many chairs in the office, his gloved hand placed under his left cheek as he leaned to his side watching his brother do some paperwork.

His lips moved side by side before asking, ''How many more days do I have to be with her?'' He was tired of being cool about this. He remembered his brother saying he shouldn't be up to a week, and now it is more than a week.

Damon looked up at him with an amused smile. ''The letter should have hit her mail by now. We just have to wait.''

''For what?''

''A response. Either a yes or no from her.''

Rayven rolled his eyes. That shouldn't be a problem. He already has a sure feeling of what her response will be. After all, she has been wanting this even before they get to know each other. Now, is her chance. A soft smile highlighted his dimples, bringing an unknown warmth to him.

He saw his brother rose from behind his large desk.

''Done so soon, brother?''

Damon nodded as he grabbed one of his coat and began to put it on. ''Festus called to see me at the abyss.''

Festus another one of Damon's many acquaintance. The abyss…let's just call it the seat of power of all Redeemed fallen angels from the house of mammon here on earth. It was an organization approved by the angels, and it includes the entirety of the House of Mammon where they all gather once in a while to discuss, deliberate about various things. It was one of those meetings Rayven do not bother attending. He was sure they all think he doesn't even exist.

''I should return to you in the next four days. I'll be taking our jet.''

Rayven doesn't mind. Whatever he has, belongs to his big brother. He is just as important to him as his life. He would never forget how he saved their lives when they were all so young during the war. Rayven stared at his other gloved hands.

''What about that…function you planned on attending for the both of us the day after tomorrow?''

Rayven noticed how the smile vanished from his brother's face as he changed his shoes into a more corporate one.

''Ah, what am I saying? It is not that necessary for you to go, brother. I will be waiting for your safe return from the abyss than worry about some event.''

The smile was back on his lips as he stood up, done with wearing his shoes. ''Don't worry about that, brother. I will have someone attend in your place.''

Rayven was relieved. He was the one who received the invitation but begged his brother to go on his behalf as usual. He has always been a good representation of him worldwide. He can't imagine his world without him as his protector from the horrors of the outside world.

Damon paused at the door of his office to stare back at him, ''I would be back before you know it.''

Rayven smiled but frowned when he left without his plaque. How would he enter the abyss without it?

He stood up and walked towards his desk. If he is lucky enough, he could still have someone send this to him before he reaches the airport. He searched with his gloved hands for his plaque on his desk and drawers. Bringing out so many papers and documents. He thought of heading towards the room to look when a popup message appeared on the screen of his laptop he must have forgotten to log out from rushing to reach where he was going.

He would have minded his business if not that it wasn't a message from the double HS.

He settled on the chair behind the desk as his fingers hovered over the inbuilt mouse, deciding on whether he should or should not read it before his brother's return.

Rayven opened the message anyway as his curiosity got the best of him. And it says;

Dear Damon Alexander from the house of Mammon, we report based on the response we received from the human you chose to redeem your brother; Rayven from the house of Mammon. She has expressed her wishes to…and below is a screenshot of her reply to her our mail…

(The night she received her selection letter)

I should be happy about this.

Ebony thought, pacing back and forth in her room. Mr. Cuddlebubbles, meowing at her restlessness. Her hair was tied into a loose knot, and she moved around in her pajamas…her selection letter glaring still from her opened laptop sitting on her reading desk.

''I mean…it is what I have always wanted to do ever since I grew my first teeth.''

Mr. Cuddlebubbles meowed again from the bed.

''But why am I…''

She pulled her chair back to sit on it once more chewing harshly on her fingernails. She sighed several times and pulled at her hair in complete frustration. Her legs shaking as she covered her mouth, still not believing her eyes.

''God, why…'' She was on the brink of bursting into tears, shaking her head at the reality of her situation. Maybe she didn't think this through or expect this to happen to her so suddenly. She wasn't ready for this! How is she going to redeem a demon she has always wanted to help if she failed to prepare herself before she had the chance too? Physically she wasn't ready as it was one of her ways to bringing him to redemption.

And…

Oh, god.

She moved some of her hair covering her face down to her neck, feeling her spine tingling with anxiety.

Not when she is just starting to develop real feelings for someone this had to happen.

She closed and opened her eyes multiple times hoping the selection letter would just vanish or receive another mail saying it was a silly prank being pulled on her.

But why so soon anyway? She began to wonder. She specifically made it clear in her profile not to be considered so soon as it will buy her enough time to be prepared for Rayven and his redemption. But this is all just too sudden and overwhelming.

She gulped as what to do hit her hard like a hammer on the head. Thank god she has a choice in this to agree or disagree. It would have been so ugly if she didn't.

She cracked her knuckles, sat straight and brought her laptop closer as she clicked on the arrow that says reply.

I would love to redeem you…in fact it has been my dream and priorities for years…but I don't think I am ready for this now. Pick someone else and by the time she fails, I would have been prepared and ready to be yours to redeem…

She groaned as that didn't sound right. What would they think of her if her reply was that? It wasn't good enough. She erased her words and thought of saying something short, simple and straightforward.

Something that doesn't give away too much of her weakness and how unfaithful she is becoming to achieve that simple goal.

She arrived at something and pressed the keys to her laptop, typing out her reply.

It was a short and simple; No.
