Chereads / The Heartbeat Of A Monster / Chapter 12 - Hatred

Chapter 12 - Hatred

Rayven slowly let go of his mask and placed it on his bed. He opened the doors that led to his enormous balcony and smiled. The night air that greeted him was cool and friendly. He leaned on the railings with his eyes closed, dreaming.

"Moonlight, don't be deceived. It's the only way for a demon like myself. Other things might be possible for a human."

"But why hasn't that worked for Rayven?"

The way she pronounced his name and how her eyes seemed so hopeful…he loved it. He opened his eyes and turned to the dull ray of moonlight at a corner of his balcony. He tried to imagine her here with him again. Her beautiful form and hopeful eyes. Her small smile…Rayven moved closer as the image of her became clearer under the moonlight. He caressed her cheeks blinking in satisfaction. He cocked his head and thought of what it would feel like to bring her in his arms.

He wanted that boldness. To kiss her on the lip to show her just how much he approves of her. He has never seen anyone so hopeful about his redemption. Even him couldn't match the light in her eyes when she spoke her mind to him.

His imagination of her had her eyes closed to him. He wanted to see those eyes again. Stare into it all day. Eyes so firm that his redemption his possible through her.

"Moonlight, I can't wait anymore until you come to me. Shall I bring you over to me now and have you in my arms until daybreak? Then, you can tell me all night about your plans on my redemption."

She smiled, still not opening her eyes. Dark clouds moved to cover the moon above him and she disappeared. He reached out to the darkness to see if he could hold her again. But nothing.

Rayven stepped back and left his room as quickly as he could. He marched down the dark hallways of his house to Damon's room. They need to bring her to him as soon as possible. He wasn't sure if he could be less restless if she is not here with him again. He made a grave mistake.

"Damon?" Rayven paced round his brother's room and frowned when he was not there. He checked his study hoping to see him reading a book as usual. He paused when his private study was empty too.

Where is he? Did he return to that dreadful party?

Rayven's footsteps echoed down another dark hallway. He was grateful to have no light in his path. I should have just brought her along with me the moment we met.

"Damon!" He continued to search for his big brother in his big house. Something dark and scary flooded his thoughts which made him walk faster searching for his brother. A memory he has tried so hard to suppress. A monstrous one that forced him to run until he found him.

Rayven hissed at the sight of light that illuminated a part of the hallway. His eyes followed where it was coming from. He moved closer to the room, which had its door wide open.

"You said I would get thrown out of your big house if he did."

He frowned at the sound of that voice as he got closer, careful not to let an inch of him have any contact with the light.

"Did he also see me when I was spying on you sneaking out of the house this evening?"

Her voice…it didn't sound like the one from his workers he has come to master, nor did it sound like someone he knew. Who is this? Talking so freely in his house? How is she here?

"I will have you sleep on the streets tonight, human. Maybe a taste of homelessness would teach you to obey the rules."

His eyes widened a bit at the sound of his brother's harsh voice. Who dares anger his brother so much?

"Damon," He called out when he got closer. The room grew silent until his brother appeared before him looking surprised.

"What? Did you see a ghost ?"

Rayven frowned in disapproval, moving his head and eager to see what creature dares talk to his brother in such manner.

"Serves you right. Not a single light in the hallways. I hope it chews out your brain, demon."

Rayven blinked losing control.

"What is that in the room with you, Damon?"

Damon was close to explaining things to him when Veronica stepped out looking pissed with her arms folded across her chest. Rayven eyed the creature from head to toe in disapproval and wondered for how long it has been living with him without him being aware of.

"Who are you talking too Damo...?" Her hands dropped to her sides as a gasp rolled out of her lips in surprise and in awe. She gazed at his form trying his best to hide in the dark and her eyes began to water at the sight of him. Even in the dark, he looked beautiful. Much more gorgeous than the crazy picture of him tearing down the internet. She stood frozen in awe at the sight of him. That was when Rayven knew he wasn't wearing his mask.

She blinked, and he was gone. Like he wasn't just before her moments ago.

"Wait!" She tried calling out to him but failed. Veronica's lips fell apart as she gripped her chest in an attempt to stop her heart from falling out of her chest. "My God, did I just see him?" She whispered to herself in disbelief. Her eyes went to Damon, who was ready to chop her head off with his hateful glares. "Is he even real? Tell me my mind just played a dirty trick on me right now."

Damon growled. Not liking where things are dissolving too.

Veronica held a bunch of her hair as a crazed smile of achievement appeared on her face. "My, my. Did I just get lucky? Just wait until I tell the whole world that they are being deceived. He is not just unnaturally beautiful. He is insanely stunning. And not real."

A force so strong forced her back inside and pinned her to a wall. A large hand fisted around her neck so tight that Veronica struggled to breathe.

"What…what…" She choked as she tried to get this demon off her. Damon looked murderous. It was crystal clear on his face that he wanted her dead right there and now. Veronica began to panic as she tried her best to free herself, but she was not strong enough. "Constantine would bring the angels upon you if you do this!" She spat out when he refused to let her go.

But Damon didn't look like he cared. He just wanted her dead. She has seen too much, and her stupid brain didn't tell her it was wise to be discreet about it right in his presence.

He had known from the beginning that she was trouble. But seeing his brother's face so quick was something he didn't expect.

And now, she was going to pay for it with her life.

"Are you insane?" She forced out as she was this close to passing out or worse, dying.

Damon only tightened his grip around her neck, wondering how long it will take for her to give up. "You would…really murder someone…just for seeing your brother's face?" She tried to free herself when his hold on her neck was starting to get increasingly painful.

"The moment I die, Constantine would make you and your creepy little brother remember what hell really is."

Damon released her and stepped back. Not because of her threats but because he doesn't want his brother to be terrorized by her death. He has already gone through so much. He would rather not create more inconveniences in his life again. He knew he fucked up big time when he allowed her into their home. He regretted ever saying yes. He watched her lay on the floor, trying to regain her breaths. Damon lowered himself beside her and seized her again. This time bringing real fear to her eyes when she noticed how his eyes darkened into frightening slits.

"I will accept that humans do make mistakes every so often. But be warned, I won't let you see the next minute the moment you tell a soul anything about my brother. He won't spare you himself if he finds out that you go about flapping your tongue to the world about what you've seen and what you know. Keep everything that happens inside this house a secret including Rayven and you would be able to see Constantine again. Are we good?"

Veronica's heart was beating fast. What exactly is wrong with these people?

She moaned in pain when his hands tightened around her upper arms, daring her with his eyes to rebel.

"Veronica. Are. We. Good?"

She has never felt so much hatred for someone before in her life so quickly. Who the damn hell does he think he his to treat her like this? Wait until she writes one hell of a letter to Constantine about her delightful experience here.

"Yes. I won't say anything. Now, let go."

Damon narrowed his eyes at her one last time before he released her and stood to his feet. He spared her one look of annoyance before he left and closed the door behind him.

No wonder, Constantine made mention of his heartbeat committing su!cide the moment he was redeemed. Who wouldn't want too, after dealing with a devil like him?
