Chapter 6 - Chapter 6

"Reality"

I sat down with Prince inside the trench. We've been in the trenches for about a week now and nothing has happened. For the past week we've just been sitting, cleaning our weapons, being on lookout, playing cards, eating, sleeping, and then repeating. It wasn't that bad, until today.

As we sat and cleaned our weapons, Prince looked at me.

"This isn't as bad as I thought.. It's actually quite boring."

"Yeah, Very boring."

"INCOMING!" A voice from the front shouts, It sounded like Elliot. We then heard a whoosh followed by a loud explosion.

Prince and I immediately threw ourselves down as explosions rained down onto our position, one explosion would go off, followed up by another. I didn't know where they were landing but it was close, very close, the soil being thrown into our dugout from the constant shelling of Artillery. I could faintly hear the screams of my squadmates as the artillery rained down onto us, it was terrible. My ears were ringing and I couldn't hear my own screams as we were relentlessly bombed without mercy. After what felt like an hour but was only a minute, it ended.

I looked over at Prince who was still alive. He sat up and looked at me. I could see his lips moving but I couldn't hear his voice. The bombing had made me go temporarily deaf. I pointed at my ears, and shouted, hopefully I said the right words. Prince and I both checked ourselves, we were covered in soil, but were fortunate enough to not sustain any shrapnel injuries. We got up and both ran towards our equipment which we left next to us. In my head I kept making remarks on how much of an idiot I am to take my equipment off in a warzone. We both picked up our rifles and ran towards the front, on the way, we saw Miller and Elliot dragging our squadmate Dylan away, his face was covered in blood and he was screaming, my hearing was slowly recovering from the relentless bombardment, I could hear, but just barely.

We looked ahead and saw the rest of our squad at the front, the trench was a complete mess, shell craters littered the area, trees had collapsed and some of the emplacements we had made were either damaged or completely obliterated. As Prince and I ran up, We saw Ashton who tapped our shoulders and motioned us to the left eastern flank of our trench.

I moved up towards an appropriate position, there were some collapsed trees in front, some sandbags and the remains of an emplacement we had made serve as cover, Prince taking up position alongside me. We waited for further orders, but knew that the Separatists were coming, we didn't know where or when, but we knew they were coming. After a few minutes, Elliot and Miller ran back up to the front, taking up a position, Miller shouting:

"DYLAN IS GONE."
