Chapter 22 - Chapter 5 - First Quest

The sun rises as Gavin is seen working out, doing pull-ups using the roof supports in his room. He soon finishes up as he gets down, wiping off some sweat as he also then stretches a bit, before then changing into a new set of clothes,

"sigh A perfect start to a good day, hopefully..."

Gavin says to himself with a sigh and a smile, as he prepares himself and opens the door to leave his room.

Gavin goes downstairs to be greeted by the busy guild in the early morning, filled with adventurers looking for some tasks and missions to do to earn some money and other rewards.

Gavin goes up to the counter as the guild assistant greets him,

"Good morning, Gavin!"

The guild assistant greets him,

"Good morning, miss... uh, I actually never knew your name... sorry."

Gavin replies, as the guild assistant giggles,

"It's okay... I'm Evangeline, but you can call me Eva. No need to be formal."

The guild assistant tells Gavin as she introduces herself,

"Oh, I see, well then, see ya around, Eva, I'll go get something to eat."

Gavin says to her as he waves her goodbye as he prepares to leave, but Eva calls him back,

"Wait, we actually have something for you today!"

Eva calls Gavin back, as Gavin looks back at her,

"Huh, what is it?"

Gavin asks her as he walks back towards the counter.

"Well, today's your first official day as an adventurer, right? So, don't you think you'll have to go on your first mission?"

She tells him as Gavin remembers that he's an adventurer now,

"Oh... oh, right! I just remembered, thanks for reminding me, Eva!"

Gavin thanks Eva with a smile, causing her to get flustered once more,

"Uh, uhm... th-thanks... ah, I mean-! No problem! Just my job, haha! Themissionboardisthatway..."

Eva replies quickly as she hides her face in embarrassment, while Gavin gets kind of weirded out.

"Uh, yeah, thanks..."

He says once more as he goes over to where all the adventurers are, the mission board.

Gavin squeezes his way through the crowd of busy adventurers crowding around the mission board. He soon manages to make it through, as he finally stands before the mission board, which is completely filled to the brim by quests, tasks, missions and request from the townspeople for rewards. However, the missions that give out more money seem to be the ones that get taken the most.

Gavin tries to look through the mission board for a simple, low-paying quest for a simple start, to also not catch any more attention, when he notices an odd-looking request paper under all of the other papers. He picked it out, it looks like a very old paper, and no one ever bothered to pick it up.

"Why would nobody get this?"

Gavin said to himself, as he reads through the request description.

"Rescue request... please save my son who vanished in the deep caverns of the Shi Mountains... huh."

He reads out the request, as he then goes back over to the counter for confirmation by Eva.

Eva sits by the counter, finally calmed down after earlier as she puts her job smile back on, as Gavin arrives back at the counter,

"Hey, Eva."

Gavin greets her, as Eva smiles back at him,

"Hello, Gavin, sorry for my sudden reaction just a bit ago, I don't know what's going on with me recently, hehe..."

Eva apologizes, as Gavin just chuckles,

"It's alright, heh... Anyway, I've chosen my first quest."

Gavin tells her, as he pulls out the old piece of paper and places it on the table, as he slides it over to Eva who picks it up and checks it out.

"Hm..."

Eva mumbles as she reads the request, when she suddenly gasps.

"Gavin."

She says after reading the request,

"What?"

Gavin replies in confusion.

"This... this request you chose... it's practically undoable."

Eva explains, as Gavin only gets more confused,

"What, why?"

He asks her, as Eva proceeds to explain why.

"Well... the reason why this paper was never picked out is... it's basically impossible. You see, one of the previous employees here told me, that a long time ago, a mother ran into here screaming for help, that her son was missing, and said that he was last seen going to the Shi Mountains, and no one listened to her, as Shi Mountain is a place filled with powerful, high-ranked monsters! All around A-Rank to even SSS-Rank."

Eva explains as Gavin listens closely,

"Huh... and absolutely no one wanted to help? Not even the stronger guys."

Gavin asked, as Eva shook her head,

"No, as at that time, there weren't much high-ranked adventurers, and they were all busy doing other dangerous missions. And no one else would take it, as the mother didn't have much to offer, only offering around $100 for such a dangerous mission, and so everyone just ignored her. She kept coming back, but every time, it's the same, no response. And one day, she just came here, placed the paper and left, and no one ever saw her again. It was said that she went to try and save her son herself."

Eva kept explaining the story, as Gavin only listened in pity,

"Damn... that's really sad."

He said, feeling bad for the poor mother,

"Yeah, and that paper just has been sitting there for 20 years."

Eva says, as Gavin 's eyes widen in a bit of shock,

"Twenty!?"

Gavin exclaims as Eva nods,

"Yeah, so I'd recommend you just put that back, or if you could, just throw it away."

She says, as she gives the request paper back to Gavin, who stares at it as he holds it within his hands, hesitating as to what he should do...

"I've decided what I'm gonna do..."

Gavin says with a seemingly serious, dedicated tone,

"Huh?"

Eva replies in confusion, as Gavin takes a deep breath,

"I'm gonna do this quest, and hopefully find this child, and the mother, and rescue the both of them, whether if they're dead or alive!"

Gavin declares, as Eva's eyes widen in shock.

"What? Gavin, are you crazy!?"

She tells Gavin, as Gavin only gives her a confident smile,

"Nah, I'm just trying to do the right thing."

He tells Eva, causing her to blush once more at Gavin's heroic attitude, as she then turns away to hide her face.

"A-alright then, w-whatever you say... B-but just know that you will get the exact rewards that the request will offer, right?"

Eva asks Gavin if he's sure about this, as Gavin just chuckles and turns away,

"I don't care about any rewards, these people didn't deserve a fate like that. I'm gonna go find them and make sure they're safe, or at least, give them a proper burial."

Gavin says confidently, as he gives Eva the request paper, as she then nervously confirms it as Gavin's official mission.

Gavin then walks away towards the door, ready for his first mission, as he turns back to Eva once more,

"Don't worry about me, alright? Because after all, I'm like, pretty damn strong."

Gavin tells Eva with a confident smile, causing her to get flustered even more.

"A-alright! G-good luck on your quest, Gavin!"

She tells him before hiding under the counter, screaming inside.

As Gavin is about to exit the guild, the doors suddenly slam open, as Miyuki suddenly shows up, looking all confident as she walks toward Gavin,

"Oh, great, it's her again..."

Gavin thinks to himself, as the witch girl stands in front of Gavin, looking up at him as she then takes a deep breath,

"Gavin Andersonn!"

She shouts at him,

"Don't shout, I'm right here-"

Gavin replies as he gets immediately cut off,

"I, Miyuki Sorugawa, am inviting you to a party! O-or... am asking to join your party..."

She says confidently, before getting shy as she feels embarrassed asking Gavin something like that. Gavin's face then switches from an annoyed, nonchalant face, to a widened eyes and mouth of shock.

"What."

He says, as the entire guild also screams in confusion at the S-Ranked adventurer's sudden invitation.
