They couldn't hear each other because Joshua's question was so heavy in the air.
Claire could see the storm brewing in his eyes, the conflict raging within him, and it frightened her.
The intensity of his gaze made her feel like she was standing on the edge of a cliff. His hand was still on her waist, but it was less tight.
"Joshua, please," Claire begged, her voice shaking as she looked into his eyes for any sign of the man she used to love. She only saw a storm of pain, anger, and deception, though.
"Why did you do this to us?" Joshua repeated, and his voice cracked a little, showing how much pain he was in.
But before she could answer, before she could even think of the words that might make him feel better, his face turned serious again.
