Chapter 337 - Night Attack 2

"Pirates? How could it be pirates?"

The officials were all shocked. It had been a long time since pirates had been seen on the western coast of the royal directly governed territory. Where did these pirates come from?

In the distance, the firelight grew brighter and brighter, as if the invaders were deliberately setting fires, and there seemed to be no effective resistance.

"Sir, should we go to reinforce the troops stationed at the port?"

Amidst the chaos, Captain Mark of the city guards remained relatively calm.

Dylan responded, "Reinforce? Uh... yes, go to reinforce them..." but he quickly changed his mind, "No, you and your men cannot leave. Our task is to guard the warehouse district."

He made a firm decision and ordered, "Quickly, strengthen the defense here. We cannot let the pirates get through."

"Yes, sir." Mark could only comply, seeing that the vice lord's body was slightly trembling.

Although he spoke firmly and calmly, Dylan was actually very anxious. He had never encountered such a situation before.

Under Captain Mark's command, the city guards organized the laborers to block the street entrances, build barricades, and prepare for a possible assault. Of course, everyone hoped that the pirates would just take what they could and leave, not coming this way.

However, Lady Luck did not favor them. The firelight gradually spread towards them, and the noise in the air became increasingly intense. The sounds of shouting, civilian screams, and the clash of chaos all combined, assaulting the psychological defenses of those behind the barricades.

Many people were at a loss. The laborers showed clear signs of panic, and even the soldiers stationed there felt fear. Most of them had never experienced a battle of life and death.

Another scout sent out to gather information ran back in a panic, his chest heaving and breathing heavily as he reported to Dylan and Mark, "Not good... not good. The navy at the port... the navy is finished."

Everyone's hearts sank, as West Port was a port city. The navy stationed here also served as city guards, and the soldiers in the warehouse district had been transferred from the navy. If the navy was defeated, it meant that the city had lost most of its defensive forces, and the few outposts scattered around the city would not make much of a difference.

Dylan was both scared and angry. Even if the higher-ups had collapsed, the lower-ranking soldiers were too useless. How could they be defeated so quickly? Had they become complacent from their comfortable lives?

As the highest official here, it was time for him to show some resolve. He took a deep breath and shouted to the prepared crowd, "Citizens of the kingdom! It is time to demonstrate our loyalty to His Majesty the King! We must hold this place no matter what, even if it is just a pile of rubble, we cannot let the pirates take it!"

He paused, silently cursing the pirates. If they wanted to loot, they should go somewhere else and not come here.

Then he continued to shout, "Citizens of the kingdom..."

Clap, clap, clap! Applause suddenly erupted from an unknown source, followed by a slightly mocking voice, "What an inspiring speech, what a loyal subject to the kingdom!"

"Who? Show yourself!" Dylan was furious, looking around for the source of the voice.

"There! On the roof!"

One of the officials beside him pointed upwards, alerting the vice lord.

Dylan quickly looked up and saw a figure on the roof of a nearby building, medium height, dressed in black, with hair fluttering in the night wind. The figure, along with the full moon hanging in the night sky behind him, resembled a mysterious hero from some novels.

"You! Who are you?"

Captain Mark stepped in front of Dylan, taking a protective stance and quickly drawing his sword, pointing it at the figure and shouting loudly. His reaction was quite fitting.

"Me?" The figure in black smiled and answered slowly, "I am the pirate you mentioned."

"Pirate?"

The crowd's faces went pale. Rather than being afraid of the figure's identity, they were surprised by his audacity. He had left his comrades behind and dared to come here alone.

"How dare you! You're looking for death!" Captain Mark was furious. The audacity of the figure on the roof was astounding.

He grabbed a bow from a nearby subordinate and shot an arrow at the rogue.

"Die, fool!"

As soon as he finished speaking, something that shocked everyone happened. Everyone saw that the arrow accurately struck the figure in black, but it passed through him as if hitting air and struck the tiles behind him.

"Oh dear! It seems this knight's aim is not very good. You still need more practice, hahahaha!"

The mysterious figure mocked.

"You! Just a mere illusion!"

Captain Mark was enraged and loudly ordered his subordinates, "You, climb up and take down this rogue!"

Several people frantically looked for ladders. Others stared at the figure on the roof with faces ashen, some rubbing their eyes, unable to believe what they had just seen. The arrow from Captain Mark had clearly hit the figure's body, yet it had passed through without any obstruction, and the figure seemed perfectly fine. Such an absurd thing was inconceivable.

Witchcraft! Magic!

These words suddenly popped into everyone's heads.

Recalling the mysterious assassination of the naval high command two days ago, it must have been the pirates who colluded with a sorcerer, incapacitating the naval command system first and then taking advantage of the chaos to land and invade.

And the person standing on the roof—a sorcerer!

Nathan stood on the roof, grinning at the panicked crowd below.

"Everyone!" He spoke, "Before your ladders arrive, how about we have a chat?"

"Chat?" Dylan was confused.

Nathan continued, "It seems your warehouse is hiding quite a few valuable items! How about this: you hand over everything in the warehouse—along with the weapons you have—and we will let you leave safely."

He clapped his hands as if applauding his own idea, "Everyone wins, what do you think?"

"Not a chance!"

Dylan was furious. The important supplies destined for the front lines were about to be stolen by pirates who appeared out of nowhere. He would certainly face consequences when he returned to the capital.

"This is the property of the Kingdom of Aldor. Not a single bit of it shall be taken!"

"Oh?" Nathan squinted, maintaining a smile but with an ominous undertone, "Then we can only blame ourselves..."

As soon as he finished speaking, the sound of countless footsteps echoed, and figures began to swarm at the entrance of the street.
