These people bared their fangs at us, clearly with the intent to hurt us. I kept my sword on my bedside, grabbing it for potential battle.
Four cloaked figures surrounded us. In a room subtly lit by the moonlight, I was hit with deja vu.
Although the situation was similar it carried more alarm.
Am I capable of fighting these people? Would it be okay to rely on Amelia again?
"Amelia take care of the two next to you I'll fight the other two."
She nodded and raised her hand alarming the foes.
They rushed at her and she closed her eyes reopening them as a sword materialized in her hand.
Her eyes were once like sapphires then turned to ruby. Her pupils sharpened like a snake's eyes.
It was then that I realized that she wasn't human. I turned my attention to the two people in front of me.
I pointed my blade at them and they swung at me. Their movement could have been more active and active. It made unhanding them very easy. They may not be very good with swords. I couldn't wrap my head around how easy it was to fend them off.
The four figures were easily defeated with three killed and one captured.
Mai and Riche barged into our room a few minutes later. They said that they were also attacked by the 'assassins'. After further investigation, we found they were part of the rebellion that was quickly growing in the slums. It was awfully bright for the night sky so I looked out the broken window.
"Uhh, Everyone look outside…"
Past the window, there were fires everywhere. Many of the buildings near us were lit in flames.
On the streets, many people were slaughtered by these men in uniforms. Shoot, there was a whole scrimmage.
We all rushed down to the first floor of the inn. The rebels already cleared out many of the rich living there. We fought more of the rebels and escaped the inn.
The outside was just chaos.
Knights were fighting the rebels, the rebels killing the civilians. Their goal was to completely eradicate the rich living above them.
The best option was to leave the city, but the exits were blocked off by the rebels. The merchant that hired Mai and Riche was killed off. Near the center of the city where the mayor lived became an execution ground. The figures in power were hanged and displayed for everyone to see.
We mingled among the rebels and their supporters by changing our clothes. On the execution sight, there was an uproar. A few of the rebels followed a young girl who was cuffed. She was led to the stand where the noose was.
What could a girl who looked no more than 12 do? I wanted to help her but I couldn't risk the other's safety for my selflessness. Then Amelia placed a hand on my shoulder. I looked back at her and saw her calming blue eyes. I relaxed.
I ran through the crowd and the rebels tried to stop me but I weaved past them and made my way to the stand.
When I reached the stand the young girl looked at me. She already had the face of defeat. Her eyes didn't share a hint of glitter. I wasn't sure what to say then, but I had to try something.
"Are you sure you want to die here?"
The girl's brown hair was dirty and damaged. Her own body seemed to be beaten. But she looked up at me. She tried to speak but nothing came out.
So I asked again.
"Do you want to die here?"
She shook her head. I crouched down and smiled.
"Then let me take you away." I cut off her cuffs and picked her up.
I leaped past the crowd and began to run.
The reason why the rebels didn't stop me from saving the girl was because they couldn't
There was an invisible wall stopping them.
The rest of our group caught up and we began to run to one of the exits. Even though it was blocked off by a large group of people, there was no issue.
Mai bashed through the crowd making a path to the outside. We made our way outside and kept running until we reached a nearby forest.
The rebel's main goal wasn't to kill off every single person but to take over the entire city. The fact that they tried to kill the young girl meant she held some sort of power within the city.
If that's the case then who is the young girl?
The questions had to wait till tomorrow. Mai set up the invisible wall to deter any unwanted guests. As we slept I quickly began to miss the soft mattress from before.
As morning arose so did we. Everyone got up and prepared to leave the Salius territory. The young girl I saved was named Lilith.
I thought she was the daughter of the mayor but it seemed I was wrong. She was an orphan and was adopted by some random noble. The reason she was targeted was because she was known as a witch. She killed one of the leaders of the rebel army. It wasn't clear how that happened though.
That wasn't our main issue. We left the city without any supplies so we had to secure food and water.
Amelia volunteered to look for food and Mai went to search for water.
I was in charge of protecting Riche and Lilith. It felt awkward how Riche seemed to know me more than I knew myself. So I had to address some things.
"Since we are at a moment of peace I have something to tell you, Riche."
She turned to face me and met my eyes eager to hear what I said.
"It seems that I've lost my memories. When you and Mai first came up to me I had no idea who you two were. Even now, I am not sure how I know the two of you."
This information seemed to rattle Riche a bit. She seemed more worried than surprised.
"I had a feeling that was the case. You looked at us as though strangers. We never actually spoke to each other before but I still knew you and you knew me. You used to live in the Kingdom of Elengaud and I was the princess there."
Wait. But that would mean. That crater… that Elengaud. I lived there.
Two years ago to be exact. I not only lost my memories of being in Elengaud but also the two years after that.
That's enough to make anyone go mad. But I feel like I could get those memories back.
"How did Elengaud become that crater?"
Riche made a sorrowful face. Oh right, she was the princess there. That must be a very sensitive topic.
"Nevermind I'm sorry."
We sat in silence for a while. Lilith slept through the awkwardness until both Mai and Amelia returned. There was a freshwater river 30 minutes away from there. Amelia brought a few birds and a strange-looking boar.
Riche and Mai prepared the food and we ate like kings.
We made our way to the river and drank the water, then followed the river to a lake.
Just before I could reach the lake, Mai and Riche stopped me.
"We're gonna clean ourselves and we need you to leave. You can scour the surroundings if you want."
Ugh. Of course. I told Litlith to go with them and then I left.
The forest was very thick and cramped with trees. It was fun though.
This experience was far more than just hiking and camping. I was living.
I should try to learn magic. But apparently, I already know it. So I guess the goal is to remember how to use magic.
