"Sometimes, I'm forced to think you are pregnant." those words weren't that loud to my ears but then came the sunlight pouring on my face. Yes, I slept with my face against the window side, but such a sudden embrace of sunshine wasn't something to write home for.
I didn't move my eyelids in response to the sudden gush of light on my face, rather, I turned to the other side of the bed, and on opening my eyes, I saw her by my study table. How she managed to move that fast to my study table after moving the curtains and throwing the windows open was such a thing to be wary of.
"Maria." I cried. "How dare you wicked wench?"
She said nothing. She was probably waiting to have me respond to what she said earlier and not worry about the sunshine on my face.
"Why do you love disturbing my sleep, Maria?" I asked, a little serious but playful, yet, she offered me a mere snub, leaving me no other choice but to go on with my query. "Maria!"
She turned to me, her face stern in pretense. I knew she wasn't being any serious, but she was merely playing the mother role that was assigned to her by my father
"I said something you are yet to respond to, ma'am." She made it to the window and drew the curtains to the center. "I asked if you are pregnant."
I tossed a pillow at her, but she dodged it, so, I tossed a second pillow at her and caught her arm, but she brushed it off and never bothered to toss it back at me. She was serious with her query, and I wasn't ready to tender a response to it.
My meal was waiting on the table, a lot of things in one tray, and a big jug of hot chocolate. I liked chocolate, she knew that, so, she made a whole meal of chocolate and the rest. There was the spray, the one you smear on bread before eating, and the solid one I could just munch on.
"I thought you were supposed to leave all those in the dining room?" I asked.
She raised a brow and drew the curtain to the far end of the window again. the sun gushed in once more, but this time, I smiled back at the pretty sun. it was no longer a surprise, and it was one of the things I needed for good health.
"I brought it here because, from the day you returned home drunk and horny, you've been sleeping past your usual time." she folded her arms. "How long does it take a lady to take in, I guess it doesn't exceed two nights."
I laughed. She was cheering me up for no reason with those words of hers, but I was shocked to hear her say I came back drunk and horny. Who knows what I did when I came home that night that made her say such?
"Drunk, yes, but horny, you are wrong." I rolled out of bed and made for my study table where the breakfast was laid out in a tray. "Chocolate."
She came close to me and crossed her hand around my shoulders like I was her sister. The whole attitude of hers didn't just mount the camel because of my father's stern orders, but because I already took her as someone who was as close as a sister, or a friend.
I wouldn't have preferred someone who would worship me like a god and treat me like an empress, I preferred a friend, and either my father himself or my mother had arranged for someone who doesn't give a shit about what and who I am.
"I worried for you that night, you were calling his name and asking him to kiss you." She whispered. "Tell me, who is Alessandro Greco, the special Orthopedist?"
I pointed a finger at her and laughed. she might have cooked the whole query up probably because of what my driver who was there in the hospital the day I read what was on the white doctor's tag.
"Oh, you and the driver boy discussed this, huh?" I asked her.
She made faces and held back my hand when I reached out to grab a piece of chocolate from the chocolate bar in the trey. I looked her in the face with my wry look.
"Who is he?" she asked. "Your lover, who exactly?"
I shrugged her arm off my shoulders and sat on my seat, ready to devour the breakfast, the way breakfast in bed is devoured even before brushing is considered.
"Greco," I took a piece of chocolate. "He is the doctor in the big hospital who fixed my leg, and I never asked him to kiss me, so, be sure of the gossips you hear before you offer them to my desk."
She smiled and leaned in on my shoulder so that her breath met my neck and her voice was clear in my ears. "You were drunk, your clothes were badly rumpled, you were calling his name and forcing yourself on the security man who brought you home in your car."
Her voice was hushed and wicked, not friendly in any way, just shunning and judging me for my misdeed which I was not in any way aware of. How could I be that stupid for god's sake?
"Can you explain that?" she asked with a still voice. "I made sure the security man had no phone with him. He is a good guy, and he didn't know you. The night at least was enough cover for your mess."
She left my side and made it to the door, she was done spoiling the morning with the news of how stupid I was two nights ago, and the breakfast, the taste had long gone with those reports and queries of hers. I managed to take a bite of the piece of chocolate in my hand.
