What happens when a whale falls?
Before that, let's first describe what a 'whale fall' is.
A 'whale fall' is literally meant a whale falling, quite comedic no? Just think about it, how can a whale fall if it lives in the ocean? However, the truth is something much more horrific, yet awe inspiring.
A 'whale fall' occurs after a whale dies. When the carcass of the majestic giant slowly falls to the sea bed, succumbing to the inevitability and begins its descent towards the oceanic cemetery. While it is sinking, it's body becomes a massive beacon in the dark depths of the abyss.
Eventually, its body will be discovered by deep sea creatures whose senses are finely tuned towards detecting the scent of death. Sharks, hagfish, the masters of the deep, turns the carcass of the whale into a bountiful banquet of blubber and muscle, which eventually turns the once majestic whale into just mere bones. Yes, it is quite sad for the once majestic whale to be turned into ocean floor food.
Afterwards, the cleanup crew comes. Small opportunistic animals comes in to clean any residual scrap ensuring that not a piece of organic material goes to waste.Â
As time passes by, small bacteria breaks down the organic matter within the bones of the fallen whale. This releases hydrogen sulfide in the water, creating a chemical oasis within the ocean floor. From this, a miraculous transformation occurs. Organisms adapted to life sustained from this chemical emerge. This chemosynthetic garden flourishes, a testament to life's resilience and adaptability in the harshest of environments.Â
Over time, the bones themselves may become covered by sediment or eroded away. Yet, the impact of the whale fall lingers. Its nutrients have been redistributed, its legacy imprinted upon the deep-sea ecosystem. Species may have evolved and adapted in response to the brief but bountiful gift of the whale's remains, marking a chapter in the ongoing story of life in the ocean depths.
Now, this is a story of a young man who happens to lived during the falling of a 'whale', or in his story, a god. This is a story of his adventures, his victories, and his losses during the fall.Â
