Chereads / Ambient Mage / Chapter 15 - Move In Day

Chapter 15 - Move In Day

I decided my special was going to be a silent triple cast.

It made sense that I would have a spell in reserve in case I couldn't use my trump card, so I decided now was a good time to show it off.

The triple cast included >, >, and >.

Starlight in itself is a combination spell, so I really was clearing the 'complicated spell' requirement for a high grade.

A silent dual combination cast made of light and star magic, followed by it's opposite attribute, dark, followed by another opposing attribute of the 3rd circle.

Truly it was a monstrous task.

But it fit within the mana I showed in the capacity test, and left me with a lot left in the tank.

The reason I decided this to be my special spell reserve was because the combination of these three spells had a similar effect to the 7th tier spell >.

The spell itself is in it's own attribute, but this watered down combination spell could recreate it's effects pretty faithfully even if the power gap was significant.

But I wasn't just going to cast a weaker eldritch tomb just because I like it.

I would draw way too much attention that way, not just from the teachers and the school, but from the demons and other countries.

So I decided to separate the components and launch them one after the other to absolutely demolish the dummies in the range.

"Number 7, please alert us to your special cast."

"Sorry about that."

I started to gather lots of my mana without letting the judges know.

"I am going to silent triple cast >, >, and > in that order."

Gasps and disbelief spread through the crowd.

Only Aurelia said something.

"Just watch."

And so everyone shut their mouths and began to focus on me.

I gathered quite a lot of mana without casting it, making the judges a little nervous about a potential mana explosion.

However I quickly converted them into three spells >, >, and >.

I combined the first two and launched them, before gathering mana and launching curse at the same time.

After that I launched > right after.

Within 5 seconds the field was decimated.

All 5 of the dummies were set to 7th circle resistance for special cast.

Despite that the middle dummy sustained 19% damage, or the equivalent of a middle 5th tier spell directly hitting a 7th circle mage.

The two around the middle dummy had a respectable 17%.

And the remaining two had 12% and 10% damage.

Aurelia had a much higher damage percentage on the dummy weighing in at 35%.

But my attack wasn't meant to be a precision strike. Yet.

In the end everyone was pleasantly surprised with my performance, with not many others scoring close to me.

The 7th circle truly is something different.

I assume these dummies are created by the engineering department, tweaked by the scholar department, and powered by a few of this academy's 7th tier mages and swordsmen.

Still, even the weakest hit dummy had taken a tenth of the damage required to kill one with direct hits.

This should place the separated version somewhere in the mid 5th tier.

The combined one was roughly peak 5th tier, early 6th tier.

Easily enough to kill any conceptual mage in one direct hit.

Aside from a few others, there were no really special casts.

One girl cast a really well made illusion.

A boy encased himself in a Ice/rock cast that he requested be pelted with 5th tier spells.

The move was a double cast instead of a continuous cast, although I'm sure he could try.

After a few hits, it was determined his cast could withstand 3 5th circle mages continuously firing at him for roughly 30 minutes. Quite the accomplishment.

And lastly another boy cast a light and dark spell combination.

This boy I remembered in full.

'The Spearman of the End'

'Wielder of Gae Bolg'

'User of the Sephiroth'

Gae Bolg was a spear that required the combined mana forms of the light and dark polar spears.

One of them was already in the academy.

The Polar Dark spear: Longinus.

In the hands of the Dean of the academy, it was a natural disaster to it's opponents.

The other, Polar Light spear: Gungnir, was another disastrous weapon.

It was currently not in the hands of the empire or academy, but it was inside an ancient ruins inside the Masvis empire.

In the game he was meant to receive one and gain the other from you.

One of very few 'livewire' characters, named this because they were unpredictable.

They were the only permanent deaths that occurred when in your party.

If normal characters dies, you could try a resurrection potion or resurrection point after going to the church. That would bring them back.

But he was one of the special ones. If he died, nothing short of a restart or loading the entrance to the dungeon, resetting your process would save them.

The game isn't clearable without them.

Well at least not by me, there were records of someone doing it, but the ending was called 'Chaos'.

And that ending while better than the bad ending wasn't much better.

Chaos reigned and people suffered through even worse trials.

Some managed to wriggle free of the demons grasp, but without the safeguard of many supernatural creatures, the humans of the new age began to tear each other apart literally and figuratively.

This character, no Mark Graves, is vital to me because he cannot die.

I assume just like in game, he is not able to be resurrected.

Now I'm not entirely certain if I am able to be, but I have never been able to reach that point.

However him dying is certainly possible if I'm not careful.

I guess the safeguarding of Mark is important.

It is also imperative to note that Mark was an orphan at birth, with an absent father and a mother who died giving birth to him.

Why is this important?

Because he is raised by foster parents.

These foster parents while doing their best for him, instill him with fear of being in power, scared of being shot down for being too powerful.

While realistic, these worries were unnecessary.

It's not like they were trying to give him the phobia to begin with, they just wanted him to live normally, or at least as best as they could within their means.

They worked to their death, to get Mark to achieve his dreams, literally.

They skimped on money and bought precious little for themselves so Mark could attend this academy.

They would die within a week into the academy's beginning.

So now my dilemma begins.

Do I save them?

I would have to travel to the outside of the capital, as Mark's home lies in a larger village south of the capital.

I guess I'll talk to them and see how they feel.

But not today.

Today I've got more important things to take care of.

Mainly the dorm situation and the need to meet some characters.

In line to recruit are:

Mark Graves

Aisha Campania

Morgan

Also later known in game as

Morgan Genoa, as she receives the inheritance of the great mage Genoa.

Mark Graves and Morgan are both commoners, while Aisha is a noble.

I believe Morgan is in the Medez hall, while the other two are in the Estelle hall with me.

I should look into the boy who encased himself in Ice and rock.

If he managed to learn to control metal magic, even without the attribute affinity, he could encase himself in > or even better >.

Although the second is a offensive skill, when used on the caster, is essentially a way to completely block any attack.

Now there are some attacks that can bypass this, but they aren't manifesting in the physical plane, so the move could be said to be impenetrable by physical manifestation of mana, whether it be magic or aura.

But that's for a later date.

Right now I need to focus on the dorm scene.

"Alright kiddos, your dorm assignment has been posted."

"After settling in go to the attendance office to receive your academy card."

"It's important you carry it with you at all times"

"Do not worry, it cannot be stolen or replicated."

"Trust me people better than me have tried and failed."

"Anyways, I will not be seeing you as much as classes begin and will be seeing you only during periodic check ins on your magic power growth and if you misbehave."

"So good luck and enjoy your academy experience."

With that Rachelle leapt off the platform and left to her office.

Naturally I went to my dorm posting first.

Of course I was in the Estelle dorm, but who exactly was I roomed with and how many.

The Estelle Hall is 8 floors tall each with their own quirks.

The 3rd and 4th floors are for female and male students respectively, there are 10 rooms in each floor and they are massive.

This means I'll have 1 roommate got it.

Guess I'll have to run to the dorm lobby to get first dibs on a room and choosing my roommate.

Naturally I chose the room closest to the mana elevator, with Mark as my first pick.

Since I arrived first in the boy's section my room request was granted, now all that mattered was getting Mark to agree.

As I began to set my stuff down the door opened.

And I saw who else but Andras Lotenheim.

"Please tell me you aren't my roommate."

"No way."

"Mark jumped at the chance to be your roommate."

"So wait where is he?"

"I have no idea, I was just passing by."

Thank Nyx above I didn't get transmigrated just to fall into classic tropes.

More importantly Mark was my roommate, so mission accomplished with that.

After setting my stuff down I waited for Mark to arrive.

Just 10 minutes later, he arrive back at the door.

"What happened earlier?"

"Oh I realized I left something back at the square and went to go get it."

"Alright. I'm Lucas."

"I'm Mark."

"Nice to meet you, I hope you're okay with training since I'll be getting up early in the morning to train now that I'm here."

"No problems here, but I'll be a little slow to it since I'm bad at waking up."

"Oh no, I wasn't telling you to accompany me, just asking if you were okay with training since some people can't stand others training."

"Oh no, you're alright, if I'm really up for it, even if I wake up I can just go back to sleep."

Wow we were synchronized just then.

"Anyways now that we're acquainted I'm off to retrieve my academy card."

"Oh me too."

"Alright see you there."

"What does that mean?"

As we left I opened the end of the hall's window and jumped out much to the surprise and horror of Mark.

I casted > to slow my fall and > to accelerate myself.

These two magic usages should be okay since they don't violate any school rules, they're under the 3rd circle and they aren't attack magic.

As I reached the front desk of the academy I noticed the alarming amount of students at the center.

Some must've skipped moving into the dorm and headed straight for the card. Smart.

But not bad for me since I know how these cards work.

For those with high aptitude and high potential in their combat course they are awarded a Blue card.

For those who have only a high aptitude or high potential a black card.

For those with neither a white card.

And for those lacking in either subject, they received a red one.

The other colors were relegated to specific people.

Like the top ranker.

Naturally your card would change according to your situation, but for now all that mattered was I was receiving a blue card, and could go to the blue card line.

There were only 78 people in either combat course that would receive a blue card.

And most of the knight course students were at their dorms currently, and of those here, they weren't of the Estelle hall.

Naturally there were some magic course blue card holders, but there weren't too many.

As I got my card I took time to closely scrutinize it.
