Summer break had finally arrived, and the days stretched lazily before them.
Qicheng and Yingying found themselves spending more time together, exploring their small town, visiting the bookstore, and sharing stories under their favorite cherry blossom tree.
Despite their deepening friendship, Yingying's true identity remained a closely guarded secret.
One particularly hot afternoon, they decided to visit a local ice cream shop. As they enjoyed their frozen treats, Qicheng noticed Yingying looking around nervously.
"Everything okay?" he asked, concerned.
Yingying nodded quickly, forcing a smile.
"Yeah, just thought I saw someone I knew."
Qicheng followed her gaze but saw nothing unusual. Shrugging, he let it go and continued talking about the latest adventure novel he was reading.
Yingying tried to focus, but her mind was elsewhere. She had spotted one of her family's bodyguards discreetly keeping watch, a reminder of the life she was hiding from her friend.
Later that evening, Yingying's mother called her into the living room. "Yingying, we need to talk," she said, her tone serious.
Yingying sat down, her heart racing. "What's wrong, Mom?"
"There's been some increased activity from those who might wish us harm," her mother explained.
"We need to be extra cautious. I know you enjoy your time with Qicheng, but you must remember to be careful."
Yingying nodded, understanding the gravity of the situation. "I will, Mom. I promise."
The next day, Yingying and Qicheng met at their usual spot under the cherry blossom tree. Qicheng could tell something was bothering her.
"Hey, you seem off today. Want to talk about it?"
Yingying hesitated, the urge to confide in him strong, but she remembered her mother's warning.
"It's nothing, really. Just some family stuff."
Qicheng frowned but didn't push further.
"Well, if you ever need to talk, I'm here for you."
"Thanks, Qicheng," she said, grateful for his support.
As the summer days went by, the sense of normalcy began to feel increasingly fragile.
One afternoon, while they were walking through the park, they were approached by a well-dressed man in sunglasses.
Yingying tensed immediately.
"Miss Xia," the man said in a low voice, "your presence is requested at home immediately."
Qicheng looked confused.
"Who is this guy, Yingying?"
Yingying took a deep breath, knowing the moment she had feared had arrived.
"Qicheng, there's something I need to tell you."
