Benjamin didn't wash his hand after scrubbing Tommy; instead, he brought it to his nose to sniff it, his back to the bathroom door.
For over a week now, he had noticed Tommy had a strong street scent, a fragrance that was so pleasant to Benjamin's senses even though it was not supposed to be.
Even during his week-long trip for the interstate contest, when he couldn't see Tommy, that scent had somehow accompanied him.
It wasn't his father's threats to finish the contest that kept him there; it was the illusion that Tommy's scent was stronger than ever in that faraway place.
But now, the scent he longed for wasn't present in the hand he used in scrubbing the kid. All he could smell was the pomegranate aroma of his soap.
