Chapter 2 - Chapter Two: The Calm Before The Storm

The estate of Lord Hae Jung Min hummed with vibrant anticipation as preparations for the New Year ceremony unfolded. Women delicately crafted lanterns in shades of vivid red and gold, their laughter blending with the melodious tunes of traditional instruments echoing through the air. The scent of blooming flowers perfumed the atmosphere, promising a year of prosperity ahead.

Amidst this joyful bustle stood Lady Do Hwa, a picture of grace matched only by her gentle demeanor. In her arms, she cradled her toddler son, Hae Min-jun, whose chubby face beamed with innocent curiosity. By her side, her radiant eight-year-old daughter, Hae Mi-hyang who eagerly offered to hold her baby brother.

"Let me carry Min-jun, Mother," Mi-hyang suggested with sparkling eyes. "It'll make your work easier."

Do Hwa smiled warmly, passing the baby into her daughter's capable hands. "Thank you, my little flower," she replied affectionately. "You're always so helpful."

Mi-hyang's heart swelled with pride at her mother's praise as she gently rocked Min-jun, watching her mother skillfully fold the delicate paper lanterns. Around them, other women chatted and sang, their skilled hands weaving lanterns with practiced ease.

Across the courtyard, the men gathered in the study, engaged in animated conversation over cups of fragrant tea. At the head of the group sat Lord Hae Jung Min, a figure of wisdom and strength whose presence commanded respect. He glanced out the window, catching his daughter's eye, and offered her a reassuring smile filled with paternal love.

Mi-hyang's gaze drifted to the pond, where her elder brother Hae Sang-woo played with his friends and cousins, their laughter was echoing through the air. Sang-woo, with his boyish charm and spirited nature, was the Hae family's pride—a young man destined for greatness.

In that moment, Mi-hyang felt a profound gratitude for her family and the wonderful life they led. She cherished her mother's gentle strength, her father's wise guidance, and the boundless energy of her siblings.

Yet, amidst the warmth of familial love, an unnamed unease began to stir within her. Everything appeared perfect, but unseen shadows of fate were already gathering, foreboding and inevitable.

As the sun dipped toward the horizon, casting a golden glow over the estate, Mi-hyang's gaze wandered to the forest edge beyond the walls. The tall trees stood silent and mysterious in the deepening dusk, their secrets hidden in the gathering shadows. A shiver ran down her spine, quickly dismissed as she refocused on Min-jun, who giggled happily in her arms.

For now, her world brimmed with joy and love, seemingly unbreakable. Little did she know, the tranquil facade would soon shatter, and her life would change forever. The happiness she cherished would soon be tested by the dark forces lurking just beyond the edge of her peaceful world.

As evening descended, the estate glowed with the soft light of lanterns. The entire family gathered for dinner in the grand dining hall, the air thick with the rich aromas of a feast prepared with love and care. Lord Hae Jung Min presided at the head of the table, his eyes twinkling with paternal pride as he observed his family enjoying the meal.

"This New Year's Eve celebration will be grander than ever," he announced, his voice resonant with authority. "We will invite our friends and allies to join us in welcoming the new year."

The family responded with enthusiastic murmurs of agreement. Do Hwa, always considerate and compassionate, smiled at her husband before adding, "Let's prepare extra food, not just for the celebration, but also for the less fortunate in our village. Sharing our blessings is our tradition."

"An excellent suggestion," Lord Hae Jung Min agreed, nodding. "No one in our village should go hungry this New Year."

Dinner continued with lively conversation and laughter, weaving bonds of family and tradition into a painting of warmth and joy. After the meal, Do Hwa gathered the children around the hearth, their faces illuminated by the flickering flames.

"Let me tell you a story," she began, her voice melodious and soothing. "It's about a magical flower that can be both a poison and a cure."

The children leaned in eagerly as their eyes widened with anticipation as Do Hwa wove her tale. She described a flower of unparalleled beauty hidden deep within an enchanted forest. Its petals shimmered in the moonlight, possessing the power to heal the gravest wounds or bring swift death, depending on its use.

"The flower teaches us that power itself is not evil," she concluded, her eyes reflecting the fire's glow. "It's how we choose to use it that matters."

The children sat spellbound as their imaginations were ignited by the possibilities of such a flower. As the story ended, a sense of wonder lingered in the room before weariness eventually claimed them. One by one, they left to their rooms, the day's activities having taken their toll.

Mi-hyang lay in bed, staring at the ceiling. Despite her exhaustion, sleep left her. An inexplicable sense of unease gnawed at her, refusing to let her rest. She slipped out of bed and quietly made her way to her mother's room, seeking comfort.

Do Hwa was there, gently rocking Min-jun to sleep. The baby boy's peaceful face was a stark contrast to Mi-hyang's troubled expression. Do Hwa noticed her daughter at the door and smiled warmly. "Can't sleep, my little flower?"

Mi-hyang shook her head, her eyes welling with unshed tears. "I feel strange, Mother. Like something bad is going to happen."

Do Hwa reached out, drawing her daughter close. "Sometimes our minds play tricks on us, especially after a busy day. But know you're safe here with us, and nothing bad will ever happen."

They talked quietly, Mi-hyang sharing her worries while her mother listened patiently, offering words of comfort. As they spoke, Lord Hae Jung Min entered the room, his expression serious. A glance passed between husband and wife, an unspoken understanding.

"Mi-hyang, it's time for bed," he said gently but firmly. "Your mother and I need to discuss some important matters."

Mi-hyang nodded, sensing the gravity of her father's tone. She helped her mother settle Min-jun into bed, tucking him in with loving care. Do Hwa kissed her daughter's forehead. "Sleep well, my little flower. Tomorrow is a new day."

As Mi-hyang left the room, she glanced back to see her parents deep in conversation, their voices low and urgent. A knot of worry tightened in her stomach, but exhaustion finally claimed her. She returned to her own bed and soon sleep enveloped her.

As the night deepened, the estate settled into a tranquil silence. Yet, beneath this peaceful facade, unseen shadows of impending danger crept ever closer. Unfelt and unheard, the wheels of fate turned, setting events into motion that would shatter their peaceful life.

Mi-hyang continued to dream fitfully, her mind swirling with visions of the magical flower and darker, ominous images. Tossing and turning, she found no rest even in sleep. Yet, for now, the looming danger remained distant—a specter lingering in the shadows, waiting for its opportune moment to strike.

As dawn approached, the estate lay quiet, unaware of the storm brewing on the horizon. The family slept, blissfully ignorant of the dawn approached, the estate lay quiet as its inhabitants were still lost in slumber, unaware of the trials that awaited them. The morning light began to filter through the windows, casting a gentle glow over the rooms where dreams of hope and love continued to prevail, despite the looming darkness that surrounded them.
