The tunnel was silent except for the faint dripping of water from unseen cracks in the walls. ShadowKat stepped forward, her silhouette illuminated by the dim, flickering lights above. Anole pushed himself off the wall, his reptilian features twisting into a smirk as he flexed his massive right arm, the muscles rippling under scaled skin. His sharp claws tapped against the ground with every deliberate step.
"You're sending her to fight me?" Anole asked, his tone dripping with mockery as his gaze swept over Kitty. "What's the matter? The rest of you too scared to step up?"
Kitty smirked, hands on her hips. "I don't need backup for this. You're all scales and no bite, big guy."
Anole chuckled darkly. "Cocky little thing, aren't you? This won't take long."
Without warning, he charged, his large frame surprisingly quick. Kitty waited until the last second before phasing through his outstretched claws. She pivoted smoothly, re-materializing behind him and aiming a kick at his exposed side.
Anole spun, his massive arm intercepting her attack mid-air. He grabbed her leg, yanking her upward with ease. "Gotcha!" he growled, his teeth glinting in the low light.
But Kitty slipped through his grasp like smoke, her body phasing just as his fingers tightened. She landed lightly on the ground a few feet away. "Close, but not close enough," she taunted.
Snarling, Anole lunged again, this time swinging his oversized arm in a wide arc. Kitty ducked and phased forward, slipping past his defenses and jabbing at his ribs. Her small fists hit home, and he stumbled back, growling in frustration.
"How are you this slippery?" Anole spat, his claws gouging the concrete as he steadied himself.
"Practice," Kitty replied coolly, circling him. "You should try it sometime."
Anole roared and charged again, his strikes becoming wilder. Kitty dodged and phased through each one, her movements fluid and precise. She darted around him, her attacks small but well-placed. Each time she connected, it was with purpose—a hit to his knee, a jab to his wrist, a strike to his shoulder.
"This is embarrassing," Anole muttered under his breath, his breaths coming heavier now. "How is a kid this good?"
As the fight wore on, Bobby leaned against the wall, his arms crossed as he watched Kitty dart and weave around her much larger opponent. "She's really giving it to him," he said with a grin. "All that training's paying off."
Jubilation smirked, her eyes flicking between the fight and Aiden. "I told you she was working hard. She's been phasing non-stop in practice, running herself ragged. Looks like it was worth it."
"She's definitely gotten faster," Bobby added. "And smarter. Look at how she's baiting him."
Jubilation laughed. "Poor guy doesn't stand a chance. ShadowKat's in a whole different league now."
Anole was breathing heavily, his movements slower and less precise. He swung again, but Kitty sidestepped, his oversized arm slamming into the wall with a loud crack. Before he could recover, she phased through him, emerging on his blind side.
"Too slow," Kitty said, her voice tinged with mockery.
Anole snarled and twisted, aiming a backhanded strike, but Kitty ducked and countered with a low sweep to his legs. He hit the ground hard, the impact echoing through the tunnel. Kitty didn't waste a second. She phased onto his back, pinning his arms with her knees and pressing a hand against the back of his neck.
"Yield," she said firmly, her voice steady despite her rapid breathing.
Anole struggled for a moment, his pride clearly wounded. He let out a low growl before going still. "Fine. I yield," he grumbled, his tone begrudging.
Kitty stepped off him and dusted off her hands as Anole pushed himself to his feet. She glanced back at Aiden, who was already approaching with a slow clap.
"Impressive work, ShadowKat," Aiden said, a small smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. "Looks like all that training's paying off."
Kitty gave a modest shrug, though the pride in her eyes was evident. "Just doing my part."
Aiden turned to Anole, who stood with his arms crossed, his expression a mix of shame and reluctant respect. "Well," Aiden said, his tone light but pointed, "I think you'll be guiding us now, right?"
Anole exhaled sharply and nodded. "Yeah, yeah. A deal's a deal. Follow me."
The group fell into step behind him, their footsteps echoing softly as they ventured deeper into the Morlocks' domain.
....
The group trudged through the damp, musty tunnel, following Anole as he led them to the hidden Morlock hideout. The air was thick with the smell of mildew and something far less pleasant, and Noriko wrinkled her nose in disgust.
"Honestly, this place is a health hazard," she muttered, her voice dripping with disdain.
"You're telling me," Jubilation chimed in, adjusting her jacket. "I feel like I need a hazmat suit just to breathe down here."
Anole ignored their grumbling as he stopped in front of a solid, rust-covered door embedded into the tunnel wall. He knocked twice, and a small, square peep hole slid open with a metallic scrape. Two suspicious eyes peered out at them.
"What's the password?" a gruff voice demanded.
Anole groaned, throwing his head back. "Sheez, Mick, it ain't that serious."
"What's the password?" the voice repeated, unyielding.
Noriko snickered, elbowing Jubilation. "These guys have a password? In a sewer? What are they protecting, mold?"
Jubilation grinned. "Bet it's something dumb, like 'sewer squad forever.'"
Anole shot them an irritated glance. "OH, DAMN IT!" he barked, exasperated. "It's '616 No Rats in Morlock.' Happy now?"
The sound of several locks clicking echoed from behind the door before it creaked open, revealing a short, stocky mutant with yellowish, almost leathery skin. Mick scowled up at Anole before his gaze shifted to the group behind him.
"Who are these kids?" he asked, his eyes narrowing suspiciously.
Anole sighed, clearly at the end of his patience. "The ones Callisto's expecting."
Mick crossed his arms, his expression growing more dubious. "I didn't hear about any of that! I can't let them in. They're kids! What sort of joke is this, Anole?"
"Not a joke," Aiden said, stepping forward with a calm, assertive demeanor that made Mick's suspicion falter. "We're here to talk to your leader about something important. Now, as I told your friend here, you can either guide me to her, or I'll go there myself—by force, if necessary."
Mick raised an eyebrow, his skeptical gaze sweeping over Aiden. "Look, kid, Anole might've been nice enough to lead you this far, but he could seriously harm you lot if it came down to it. You might wanna think twice before throwing threats around here."
Anole let out a frustrated groan, pinching the bridge of his nose. "Mick… why do you always have to be like this?"
Mick turned to him, confused. "What? I'm just saying the truth, man. You're one of the top warriors here. These kids don't stand a chance against you."
Anole looked like he wanted to crawl into a hole and disappear. He jabbed a finger at Kitty, his voice dripping with irritation. "Her. Just her, Mick. She beat me."
Mick's eyes widened in disbelief. "What?! Her? Alone?" His gaze darted back to Kitty, then to Anole. "You're Lizard Boy! You're one of the strongest fighters here!"
"Yeah, yeah," Anole grumbled, crossing his arms. "Can we move on already? Just let them in, for crying out loud."
Mick hesitated, his expression shifting from disbelief to something closer to wariness. He studied the group with newfound caution before stepping aside and gesturing toward the open door. "Alright, fine. My bad, eh? Go on in. Anole will take you to Callisto."
Aiden gave Mick a cheeky wink as he passed. "Good to meet you, Mick," he said mockingly, his tone light but pointed.
Mick scowled but said nothing, stepping back into the shadows as the group followed Anole deeper into the Morlocks' domain.
"You're really making friends down here," Jubilation whispered to Aiden with a grin.
He smirked, his eyes focused ahead. "Just wait. The fun's only starting."
