Chapter 10 - A Friend in the Forest

The sun filtered through the dense canopy, casting dappled patterns on the forest floor. Emma, now adept at navigating her way through the myriad pathways of her forest home, decided to take a leisurely walk. Her newly acquired flight ability had given her a new perspective on the world, but today, she craved the familiar scent of earth and foliage.

As she strolled, her senses attuned to every rustle and chirp, Emma felt a sense of peace. However, this tranquility was soon shattered by the faint sound of hurried footsteps and labored breathing. Her ears perked up, and she turned towards the noise, curiosity piqued.

Rushing through the underbrush, Emma came upon a distressing scene. A small elf girl, no older than seven, was sprinting away from a snarling Forest Hound. The girl's clothes were torn and dirty, her face streaked with tears. Emma's protective instincts kicked in immediately.

**Forest Hound:**

**Health: 100/100**

**Strength: 10**

**Agility: 15**

**Intelligence: 5**

**Luck: 10**

**Description: A low-level beast known for its persistence and pack mentality.**

Emma knew this fight would be easy. She charged at the hound, unleashing a burst of her Fire Breath. The hound yelped and tried to dodge, but it was too slow. The flames engulfed it, and with a final whimper, it collapsed.

**You have gained 50 EXP.**

The elf girl, panting and wide-eyed, froze. Instead of relief, her face was painted with terror. She began to back away slowly, her small frame trembling.

"Wait," Emma thought desperately. "I don't want to scare you."

Emma observed the girl's appearance closely. She had large, emerald green eyes, wide with fear, and a cascade of silvery-blonde hair that reached her waist. Her delicate ears, characteristic of her elven heritage, were slightly pointed. The rags she wore were stained with dirt and tears, barely protecting her from the forest's chill.

**Elf Child:**

**Name: Lyria**

**Health: 50/50**

**Strength: 5**

**Agility: 8**

**Intelligence: 15**

**Luck: 10**

**Description: A young elf girl, lost and alone in the forest. She has been through a lot and is in desperate need of help.**

Lyria, as the system identified her, started to cry, backing away further. Emma's heart ached at the sight. She had to find a way to show Lyria she wasn't a threat.

"Draconis, any ideas?" Emma asked her ever-helpful system.

**Perhaps try communicating through writing, Emma. Use your claws to write in the dirt.**

Emma nodded, even though Draconis couldn't see her. She carefully extended a claw and began to scratch words into the soft earth.

"I won't hurt you."

Lyria's eyes widened as she read the message. Her tears still flowed, but curiosity began to replace some of the fear.

Emma wrote again, "Are you okay?"

Lyria hesitated, then nodded slowly, her small voice quivering as she spoke. "Who...who are you?"

Emma thought for a moment before writing, "I'm Emma. I'm a dragon, but I don't want to harm you."

The elf girl's eyes were still wary, but she stopped retreating. Emma took this as a good sign and continued.

"Why are you alone here?" she scratched into the dirt.

Tears welled up in Lyria's eyes again. "My parents...they're gone. They died, and...and I got lost. I've been alone for days."

Emma's heart broke for the child. She couldn't imagine the fear and loneliness Lyria must have felt. Determined to help, she wrote, "You don't have to be alone anymore. I'll protect you."

Lyria looked at Emma, her eyes searching for any sign of deception. Finding none, she nodded, though the tears still flowed freely. Emma wished she could do more than write in the dirt to comfort the girl.

"Are you hungry?" Emma wrote. Lyria nodded, her small stomach grumbling in response.

Emma remembered a berry patch nearby. She led Lyria there, making sure to move slowly so the girl could keep up. The child eagerly picked and ate the berries, her face lighting up with a small, tentative smile.

As they sat by the berry patch, Emma decided it was time to learn more about Lyria's situation. "Can you tell me more about what happened?" she wrote.

Lyria hesitated, then began to speak, her voice barely above a whisper. "We were traveling through the forest when we were attacked by monsters. My parents tried to protect me, but..." She choked back a sob. "They told me to run, so I did. I've been trying to find my way out, but I just keep getting more lost."

Emma felt a surge of protectiveness for Lyria. She couldn't let this little girl fend for herself any longer. She had to make sure Lyria felt safe and cared for.

"Would you like to stay with me?" Emma wrote. "I can keep you safe."

Lyria looked at Emma, her eyes wide with hope and fear. "Really? You'd do that for me?"

Emma nodded, writing, "Yes. You don't have to be alone anymore."

Lyria's tears began anew, but this time they were tears of relief. She threw her arms around Emma's neck, her small frame trembling with emotion. Emma was careful not to move too suddenly, worried she might accidentally hurt the fragile child.

"Thank you, Emma," Lyria whispered. "I...I don't know what I would have done without you."

Emma nuzzled the girl gently, her heart swelling with a mix of emotions. She had never expected to find herself caring for a lost elf child, but she knew it was the right thing to do. She had the strength and the ability to protect Lyria, and she was determined to keep her safe.

As the sun began to set, casting long shadows through the forest, Emma and Lyria made their way back to the cave Emma had been using as her home. It was cozy and safe, with enough room for both of them. Emma used her claws to gather some soft leaves and moss, creating a makeshift bed for Lyria.

Lyria lay down, exhausted from her ordeal. Emma settled beside her, keeping a watchful eye on the entrance to the cave. She would protect this child with everything she had.

Before Lyria drifted off to sleep, she reached out and touched Emma's claw. "Goodnight, Emma. Thank you for saving me."

Emma smiled, a warmth spreading through her. "Goodnight, Lyria," she wrote. "Sleep well."

As the night enveloped the forest, Emma watched over Lyria, feeling a sense of purpose and fulfillment. She had found someone to care for, someone who needed her. And in turn, Lyria had given Emma a new sense of meaning and companionship.

For the first time since her reincarnation, Emma felt truly at peace.

And with that, the dragon and the elf child fell into a peaceful sleep.
