Chapter 221 - The Investigation Begins

The next morning, Ryo awoke with a renewed sense of purpose. The foreboding letter from the previous night still weighed heavily on his mind, but he was determined not to let it disrupt their lives any further. He shared his thoughts with Aiko over breakfast, and they both agreed to begin investigating the origin of the letter.

Their first step was to retrace their steps from the past few weeks, trying to remember if they had encountered anyone unusual or if anything strange had happened that could be connected to the letter. But as they went over their time in India and their return to Japan, nothing stood out. Everything had seemed normal—until the letter.

"I think we should check with the postal service," Aiko suggested, pushing her half-eaten toast aside. "Maybe they can tell us where the letter was mailed from."

Ryo nodded, though he wasn't optimistic. The letter had no postmark, which was unusual in itself. But it was worth a try. After breakfast, they headed to the local post office.

The clerk at the post office was polite but unhelpful. Without a postmark, there was no way to trace where the letter had come from. Ryo wasn't surprised, but he couldn't help feeling frustrated.

As they left the post office, Aiko suggested they visit the local police station next. "It's probably nothing, but maybe they've seen something like this before," she said.

At the police station, they spoke with a detective who listened to their story with a serious expression. He examined the letter carefully, his brow furrowing as he read the cryptic message.

"It's strange, I'll give you that," the detective said, handing the letter back to Ryo. "But without any concrete threats or evidence of a crime, there's not much we can do. I'll make a note of it, though, and keep an eye out for anything similar."

Ryo thanked the detective, feeling a mixture of relief and frustration. He had hoped the police might have some answers, but it seemed they were no closer to finding out who had sent the letter or why.

As they walked back to their apartment, Aiko linked her arm with Ryo's. "We'll figure this out," she said, her voice steady. "Maybe it's just someone trying to mess with us. If it is, we'll make sure they regret it."

Ryo smiled at her determination. "You're right," he said, squeezing her hand. "We'll get to the bottom of this."

Back at home, they decided to take a more technological approach. Ryo scanned the letter and ran it through a few online tools that could potentially match the handwriting to known samples. They also searched for any similar messages online, hoping to find a connection.

Hours passed with no luck. The handwriting was unique, and no similar messages popped up in their searches. The frustration grew, but Aiko kept their spirits up, making jokes and teasing Ryo whenever he started to look too serious.

As the day turned into evening, they decided to take a break. Aiko suggested ordering their favorite takeout and watching a movie to unwind. "We can't let this take over our lives," she reminded him. "We need to keep living, too."

Ryo agreed, and they spent the rest of the evening enjoying each other's company, the mysterious letter momentarily forgotten. But as the night grew late, Ryo couldn't help but wonder what their next step should be. The investigation had only just begun, and he had a feeling that the mystery was far from over.
