Chapter 168 - The Unseen Threat

The morning of the festival dawned bright and clear, but the cheerful atmosphere couldn't shake the lingering tension among Ryo, Aiko, and their friends. The threat of the Shadows of the Eclipse weighed heavily on their minds, making every shadow seem more sinister and every unfamiliar face a potential threat.

Despite their unease, they threw themselves into the festivities, helping to set up stalls, hanging decorations, and practicing their performances. The entire school was a flurry of activity, with students and teachers alike buzzing with excitement.

Ryo and Aiko, though vigilant, made sure to stay in the spirit of the event. They spent their free moments together, laughing and teasing each other in an effort to keep the mood light. Ryo even managed to win a plush toy for Aiko at one of the game stalls, much to her delight and mock annoyance.

"You're just showing off now," Aiko teased, clutching the plush tightly.

"Of course," Ryo replied with a smirk. "Can't have you thinking I'm not capable of winning you over."

Aiko rolled her eyes but couldn't hide her smile. It was these little moments that kept them grounded, even as the threat loomed ever closer.

As the day progressed, they split up to cover more ground, each keeping an eye out for anything suspicious. Ryo patrolled the food stalls while Aiko checked the performance stages. Kenta and Hana kept watch near the main entrance, and Yuki roamed the crowded paths, using her natural charm to blend in and gather information.

The festival reached its peak in the afternoon, with the main stage set for the highlight performances. The crowd gathered, filling the area with excited chatter and anticipation. Aiko was slated to perform a traditional dance, and Ryo found a spot near the front to watch, his eyes never leaving her.

As the performance began, Aiko moved with grace and precision, her every step captivating the audience. Ryo couldn't help but feel a swell of pride and affection for her. But amidst the admiration, his instincts remained sharp. He scanned the crowd, looking for anything out of place.

Then he saw it a glint of metal among the spectators, just a fleeting flash but enough to set his heart racing. Ryo pushed through the crowd, keeping his eyes fixed on the spot where he had seen the glint. His hand instinctively moved to the small, concealed weapon he carried for protection.

He reached the edge of the crowd and saw a figure slipping away, heading towards the back of the stage. Without a second thought, Ryo followed, his mind racing with possibilities. He had to find out who this was and what they intended to do.

Aiko, meanwhile, finished her performance to thunderous applause. She took her bow, her eyes scanning the crowd for Ryo. When she didn't see him, a flicker of worry crossed her mind. She quickly made her way backstage, where she spotted him moving swiftly through the shadows.

"Ryo!" she called out, but he didn't hear her.

Determined to catch up, Aiko followed, weaving through the bustling performers and staff. She finally caught sight of him just as he reached the figure a hooded person, turning to face him with a sinister smile.

"Ryo, be careful!" Aiko shouted, closing the distance.

The figure raised their hand, revealing a small device that emitted a blinding flash. Ryo staggered, momentarily disoriented, but managed to regain his footing. The figure, taking advantage of the confusion, bolted towards the exit.

Aiko reached Ryo's side, her hand on his arm. "Are you okay?"

Ryo nodded, his vision clearing. "Yeah, but we can't let them get away."

Together, they sprinted after the figure, their hearts pounding. The festival's cheerful atmosphere now seemed distant and irrelevant. They had to catch this person, find out what they were planning, and protect the amulet at all costs.

The chase led them through the school's narrow alleys and back into the crowded festival grounds. The figure moved swiftly, but Ryo and Aiko were relentless. As they closed in, the figure stumbled, giving Ryo just enough time to tackle them to the ground.

Aiko caught up, panting slightly. "Who are you?" she demanded, pulling back the hood to reveal a young, stern-faced man.

"You're too late," he hissed, a malicious gleam in his eyes. "The Eclipse will rise, and there's nothing you can do to stop it."

Ryo and Aiko exchanged grim looks. The real battle was only just beginning.
