Chapter 103 - The School Garden Project

The following week, Ryo and Aiko plunged headfirst into their first major project: revitalizing the school garden. It had been neglected for years, overgrown with weeds and surrounded by broken fencing. Both felt it was the perfect starting point to rally the students and create a tangible improvement.

They began by gathering a group of enthusiastic volunteers, including Kenta, Hana, and a mix of underclassmen and seniors who were eager to help. The first task was a thorough cleanup, and on a sunny Saturday morning, the team assembled, armed with gloves, shovels, and determination.

"Alright, team," Ryo called out, clapping his hands to get everyone's attention. "Today, we're going to clear out the weeds and remove any debris. Once we have a clean slate, we can start planting new flowers and vegetables."

Aiko stood beside him, holding a detailed plan she had drawn up. "We'll divide into groups. Some of you will handle weeding, others will work on fixing the fence, and the rest can start preparing the soil for planting. Let's make this garden something we can all be proud of."

The students cheered, energized by the clear direction and the prospect of transforming the space. Ryo and Aiko led by example, diving into the work with enthusiasm. Ryo tackled the stubborn weeds with Kenta, while Aiko supervised the fence repairs with Hana.

As the morning progressed, the garden began to take shape. The weeds were gradually cleared away, revealing patches of fertile soil beneath. The broken fence was dismantled, and the materials were set aside for reuse.

During a short break, Ryo and Aiko regrouped with their friends under the shade of a nearby tree. Kenta took a swig of water, wiping his brow. "This is hard work, but it feels good. I can already see the difference."

Hana nodded, smiling. "It's going to be beautiful when we're done. I can't wait to see the flowers bloom."

Aiko looked around, pleased with the progress. "We're off to a great start. Once we finish the cleanup, we can start planting next week."

As they returned to their tasks, Ryo noticed a few younger students struggling with a particularly stubborn patch of weeds. He walked over, offering guidance and encouragement. "Try using the spade to loosen the soil first. It makes it easier to pull the roots out."

The students followed his advice, and soon the weeds were cleared. They looked up at Ryo, gratitude evident in their eyes. "Thanks, Vice President. That really helped."

"No problem," Ryo replied, smiling. "We're all in this together."

By the end of the day, the garden was completely cleared, and the soil was ready for planting. The team gathered for a final debrief, their faces tired but satisfied.

"You all did an amazing job today," Aiko said, her voice filled with pride. "We've laid the groundwork for something truly special. Next week, we'll start planting, and before you know it, this garden will be a vibrant part of our school."

The students cheered, their spirits high despite their exhaustion. As they dispersed, Ryo and Aiko lingered, surveying the garden.

"This is going to be incredible," Ryo said, his voice filled with anticipation. "I can already picture the flowers and vegetables growing here."

Aiko nodded, her eyes shining. "Me too. And it's just the beginning. We're showing everyone what we can achieve when we work together."

As they walked away from the garden, side by side, they felt a deep sense of accomplishment. Their first project was well underway, and the bond between them and their fellow students had grown stronger. With every step, they were not just transforming the school garden but also fostering a spirit of collaboration and community. And in the process, their own relationship continued to flourish, grounded in mutual respect, shared goals, and an ever-present sense of teasing affection.
