Silence enveloped us like a suffocating blanket, stretching out over the vast expanse of people amidst the swirling dust clouds. We stood there, stunned and bewildered, as if frozen in time.
As for me, I found myself grappling with a whirlwind of conflicting emotions. It was difficult to make sense of it all; my mind felt like a jumble of tangled wires, unable to process the chaos unfolding before me. Amidst the sea of faces, each bearing a different expression – from tears to laughter – I struggled to find my footing.
"What the fuck..." I muttered under my breath, casting a bewildered glance at those around me. Some were weeping inconsolably, while others seemed to be on the brink of hysteria, their laughter tinged with madness. Meanwhile, a minority did not react at all, rather, they looked intrigued at the incident that transpired before us, some even investigating the dust that lay at their feet.
Taking a deep breath, I attempted to collect my thoughts, but the task proved daunting. I was at a loss, overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of the situation. It was as if I had been thrust into the middle of a nightmare, with no clear path forward.
"Okay...okay. Think, Al," I murmured to myself, the words feeling hollow and meaningless. Despite my efforts, I couldn't shake the feeling of helplessness that engulfed me. I didn't know what to do, who to turn to, or even where I was.
All I had were the haunting words of Chronos echoing in my mind, a constant reminder of the surreal reality I now found myself in. With a heavy heart, I tore my gaze away from the circus around me and fixed my eyes on the towering structure looming in the distance, its imposing presence a reminder of the unknown ahead.
'He said that tower would give us answers… But before knowing it, we need to know ourselves.' With that, I only had a single word in my mind.
"Status"
As that word escaped my mouth, A vibrant violet status menu popped up in front of my face, just as if I was in a video game.

" I guess he wasn't lying about the gaming part," I pondered, analyzing my current status.
As my gaze scanned the list, my brow furrowed in confusion.
"What's all these question marks? And what's 'Riftting'?" The skill lacked a description or even a level, which concerned me. How was I supposed to use it? Was I unable to because my Magic stat was non-existent, or had Chronos given me a glitched system?
Setting aside those questions for the moment, I delved further into the system that now bound me and countless others.
"Quests?"
With a mumble and thought I flipped to the next page.

As I read through the quest details, a sinking feeling settled in the pit of my stomach. Kill 10 entities in the World of Beginnings? What exactly qualified as an entity? Were they harmless creatures like green slimes in video games, or could they be something more dangerous? The ambiguity of the task left me feeling uneasy and uncertain about what lay ahead.
Lost in thought, I realized that I had been transported to a strange place called Aetheria—a realm that still existed within Earth's domain. The revelation only added to my confusion. How was it possible that I was still on Earth, yet everything around me seemed otherworldly and surreal?
The wording of the quest felt too vague for my liking, leaving me with more questions than answers. Despite my reservations, I knew that I had little choice but to follow the system's directives for now. After all, it had miraculously cured me of my illness and provided me with newfound vitality. But could I trust it completely?
Running a hand through my hair, I weighed my options carefully. My physical condition was no longer a concern, but the uncertainty of my situation loomed large. Would my cancer return if I defied the system's rules? I couldn't afford to take any risks, not when my newfound health hung in the balance.
As I contemplated my next move, the harsh reality of my former life came crashing down on me. The staggering hospital bills, the looming threat of eviction—returning to my old life seemed like a bleak prospect compared to the possibilities that lay before me in Aetheria.
In a twisted way, this surreal realm offered me a chance at a fresh start—a chance to leave behind the burdens of my past and forge a new path forward. Despite the dangers and uncertainties that lay ahead, the prospect of embarking on this quest held a strange allure. Perhaps this was my opportunity to seize control of my destiny and reclaim my life from the clutches of fate.
With a newfound sense of determination, I resolved to face whatever challenges awaited me in the World of Beginnings. After all, what did I have to lose? In this strange and wondrous realm, anything was possible—even redemption.

I powered down my system and surveyed the scene unfolding around me. People activated their systems, their expressions a kaleidoscope of emotions mirroring the profound changes sweeping through them.
A young woman nearby grew rabbit ears, her disbelief palpable. "I'm not human anymore," she exclaimed, her voice trembling.
A man with scales echoed her sentiment, his shock evident. "What do you mean? You're human," he insisted, pointing to his screen.
She shook her head, her confusion mounting. "Not according to mine. I'm a Leporid with a lifespan of 150 years."
The redheaded man, skeptical, struggled to comprehend. "150 years? That's impossible."
As the debate ensued, a scaled man chimed in, revealing his own transformation. "I'm not human either. I'm a lizardman."
The doctor, bewildered, struggled to reconcile this with his understanding of science. "This defies all logic."
The surreal scene continued to unfold. Bones snapped, skin shifted, and people transformed into creatures beyond imagination. A boy became a werewolf, a woman a cat-like being.
Meanwhile, I remained unchanged, unable to unlock any hidden abilities. Frustration gnawed at me as I grappled with the realization that I was the odd one out in this new reality.
Around me, others reveled in their newfound powers or grappled with fear and confusion. Some embraced their transformations, while others struggled to accept them.
As the chaos subsided, I was left with one certainty: I needed to understand my abilities if I hoped to survive in this strange new world.
I let go of my attempts to use my Riftting ability, disappointment etched across my face. It was clear it wouldn't work for now, and I couldn't afford to waste any more time. The looming tower in the distance beckoned me, miles away. With a resigned sigh, I began my journey.
As I traversed the city, I couldn't help but notice the surreal surroundings. Despite its unfamiliarity, the buildings exuded an eerie, abandoned aura, as if anticipating the chaos about to unfold.
Suddenly, shouts and clashes shattered the air. It all started with a stray lightning bolt, igniting a chain reaction of bickering and threats, eventually escalating into a full-blown brawl.
Amidst the chaos, a man with electric blue hair unleashed lightning bolts at a woman, triggering a fiery retaliation. Nearby, a bakeneko attempted to flee the chaos, only to be ensnared by someone with the strength of a serpent.
"This is insane," I muttered to myself, quickening my pace. I felt like a mere observer in a surreal novel, a side character amidst the turmoil. I needed to steer clear of these battles; I was too vulnerable.
As I hurried through the streets, the violence escalated. Glass shattered, and the air crackled with tension. I couldn't help but lament the unfairness of the situation, feeling the explosions and impacts reverberate through my being.
I had to escape before things spiraled further out of control.
Breaking into a run, I focused on the distant tower, my only beacon of safety. The streets blurred as I sprinted, oblivious to the chaos around me. None of it mattered; all that mattered was reaching the tower.
With each stride, the tower drew nearer. But I wasn't alone in my pursuit; others had the same idea. It seemed that the tower held answers or refuge, drawing an ever-growing throng of desperate souls.
As the crowd surged forward, chaos erupted. People with newfound abilities exploited their powers to gain an edge, leaving destruction in their wake.
Amidst the chaos, I spotted a boy with feline grace darting through the crowd, agile and nimble. Envy gnawed at me as I watched others effortlessly overcome obstacles with their supernatural gifts.
But I couldn't dwell on envy; I had to stay focused on my goal.
As I neared the tower, a sense of relief washed over me. But my relief was short-lived as I noticed the crowd at its base, frozen in hesitation.
"Why have they stopped?" I wondered aloud, seeking answers amidst the confusion.
A towering figure, emanating an aura of authority, turned to me with a friendly smile. "Chronos warned us not to proceed. That's why they've halted."
I followed his gesture and saw a giant golden transparent clock hovering ominously above in the sky, its hands frozen.
"Ah," I uttered, feeling a mix of relief that everyone was being kept in check, but apprehension as we could've been aged to dust at any moment just like the others from earlier.
"I'm Theseus," the older man said, extending a large hand toward me. His grip was firm yet welcoming, his demeanor a stark contrast to the chaos around us.
"You mean like the Greek god?"
"Well, demi-god to be specific," He replied with a smile.
"Never met anyone with that name before."
"It used to be a common name where I'm from. I suppose it's rather rare now," He mumbled, a hint of nostalgia coloring his tone. Wanting to break the awkward tension, I introduced myself.
"Right… My name is Alistair," I replied, shaking his hand.
"Alister? That's a strong name. You know its origins?"
"Well, not really. It was just something my mom named me."
"Well, the origin of it is Greek. It comes from Alexander, which means defender of the people."
"Oh? Thanks. Never knew that."
"Of course." He nodded. As he did, a system window popped up once more.
A familiar voice then echoed in our minds. "Hello again," Chronos said, his image appearing on the screen.
"Crap… Is he gonna kill more of us?" someone in the crowd whispered.
"I doubt he would go through all that effort to lead us here if that was the case. Something else is going on."
"Is he going to explain the hows, whats, and where's now? I mean…. In more detail this time," another asked, their voice trembling with fear.
Chronos' image regarded us with an indifferent gaze. "I see that many of you have arrived. Since that's the case," he began. "This is the start of your true begging. The system has awakened these abilities to aid you on your journey. On this journey, your lives depend on the actions you take moving forward from here on out."
I glanced around, seeing the mix of fear and determination on the faces of those around me. Theseus turned to me again, his expression serious. "Alistair, what are your thoughts on this situation? This system… It's suspicious, don't you think? I feel as if there's something he's not telling us," He crossed his arms and scowled.
"Yeah… I feel the same way. But it's not like we have a say. I mean, at any moment, we can get wiped out just like the people from earlier did. I think we should listen," I uttered which prompted him to nod in turn.
As everyone stared at their screens, Chronos began to speak. "As you can see behind me, this is the tower. At its base is a teleportation gate to other realms beyond Earth. On every floor, you will see a tower just like this one." He gestured behind him, emphasizing the enormity of the structure.
Chronos then started walking towards the tower, and the video followed him closely. "Ascend," he commanded, and a holographic screen materialized in front of him.
The screen displayed a welcoming message:
[Welcome to the Gate of Ascension]
[Before entering the tutorial, please select a weapon.]
As Chronos waved his hand, a variety of weapons appeared on the screen: swords, spears, bows, axes, maces, daggers, hammers, staves, whips, and even unconventional weapons like chakrams and boomerangs. The array was vast, each weapon glinting as if it were freshly forged.
Chronos scrolled through the options until he landed on a sickle. With a decisive tap, a basic-looking sickle materialized in his hand, its blade sharp and menacing for its size.
He then began to mumble words in a strange language which caused the sickle to fly out of his hands, hovering in mid-air. As it did, strange yellow Greek runes appeared in the air, surrounding and wrapping around the weapon, then melding into it, exuding a bizarre pulsing energy that seemed to warp the space around it.
Once the runes were completely merged with the weapon, the sickle elongated into a scythe and greatly increased its blade length while also turning its shaft black and its blade a mysterious gold color.
He turned back to the screen, addressing the crowd once more. "Although many of you have now awakened bloodlines and abilities, do not get overzealous and underestimate the utility of a weapon. Although it may not appear to be much as of the moment, having a weapon is an absolute necessity, something that can save your life in the tower."
Chronos swung the scythe effortlessly dissecting space in front of him, leaving behind a bleeding rift that dropped the jaws of many watching. "Heed my warning, for it is the only one I will be giving. Mana, the essence of your abilities, can run out. When that happens, a weapon can be your lifeline. Moreover, many abilities can be channeled through a weapon, amplifying their power and effectiveness."
He paused, allowing his words to sink in. "Weapons can also be enhanced by rune masters or blacksmiths on higher floors in exchange for gold which can make the weapon many times more powerful and even durable. In the heat of battle, when your energy is depleted, a well-chosen weapon can turn the tide in your favor."
Chronos then swiped his scythe again, mending the rift in space he created effortlessly. "Choose your weapon wisely. The weapon you select now will be with you until you find something better. Treat it as your most prized possession."
With that, the system window closed, but another one opened right after.
When it got to this part, a window popped up in front of me, displaying a simple question:
[Are you ready to go to the teleportation gate?]
[Yes / No]
I hesitated, my gaze darting around the room to gauge the reactions of the others. Excitement, confusion, skepticism—it was all there, written on their faces. Nervously, I shifted my weight from one foot to the other, unsure of what to make of the situation unfolding before me.
"This is just a game," a man scoffed dismissively, his tone dripping with arrogance. His hand shimmered with a watery aura, droplets dancing around his fingers as if on cue.
Another voice chimed in, filled with a similar bravado. "Why bother with a sword when I can command the wind itself? Shields are for the weak. If it's a fight we're facing, I'll summon a storm to wash away any opposition." The man's laughter grated on my nerves, a stark reminder of the callousness that seemed to pervade this newfound reality.
As people boasted about their newfound powers and enhancements, I couldn't shake the feeling of unease that settled in the pit of my stomach. It was as if they were oblivious to the horrors that had unfolded just hours ago, the lives lost in a blink of an eye.
'This is crazy.'
I wanted nothing more than to distance myself from the chaos, to retreat into solitude where I could process the magnitude of what had occurred.
Amidst the chatter, one individual's boast stood out among the rest. His arrogance was palpable as he proclaimed himself a god among mortals, his words dripping with hubris. It was a stark reminder of the dangers that lurked within this new world.
"Yeah, I'm getting the hell out of here," I muttered under my breath, my decision to leave solidifying with each passing moment. The system window vanished, confirming my choice to seek refuge elsewhere.
Suddenly, a radiant aura enveloped me, bathing me in its warm embrace. Before I could bid Theseus farewell, the world around me blurred and shifted, transporting me to a new location.
I found myself standing in a circular chamber, the soft glow of ambient light illuminating the sleek, metallic walls. My heart pounded in my chest as I approached the raised platform at the center of the room, its surface pulsating with a faint blue light.
Taking a deep breath to steady my nerves, I stepped onto the platform and whispered, "Ascend."
A window materialized before me, its vivid violet hue casting an eerie glow in the dimly lit chamber. The message displayed in bold letters, demanding my attention.
[Welcome to the Gate of Ascension]
[Before entering the tutorial, please select a weapon.]
As the detailed menu materialized before me, showcasing an impressive array of weapons, a sense of slight hesitation washed over me. I had never wielded a weapon before, and the thought of choosing one now felt daunting. While others could rely on their newfound abilities, I knew that a weapon was my only means of defense in this strange new world.
My eyes scanned the list, searching for something that felt right. At first, I entertained the idea of selecting a gun, but the options presented were far from what I had anticipated. A slingshot, a bow and arrows, throwing knives—each accompanied by unfamiliar accessories that left me feeling uncertain of my abilities.
As I continued to scroll through the list, one image caught my attention and brought a flicker of excitement to my heart. The Scorpion Chains? Memories of late-night gaming sessions flooded my mind, transporting me back to the immersive worlds of my favorite video games. Forgotten Realms: Shadow of Yesterday—a title that held a special place in my heart, now becoming a reality before my eyes.
With a mixture of trepidation and anticipation, I tapped on the image, eager to learn more about these weapons that had once been nothing more than pixels on a screen. As the description and stats appeared before me, I couldn't help but feel a surge of excitement at the prospect of wielding these legendary weapons in real life.

I read through the details of the Scorpion Chains, feeling a surge of excitement. The weapon seemed both versatile and lethal, perfect for someone like me who didn't have a grasp on supernatural abilities. With a decisive tap, I selected the Scorpion Chains.
Instantly, the chains materialized around my hands and arms, their cool metal sending a shiver up my spine. They felt almost alive, the links shifting and moving with my slightest motion. But before I could even attempt to test them out, the room around me began to shimmer. The platform beneath my feet glowed brightly, and I felt the now-familiar sensation of being transported. The world around me blurred, and I was enveloped in a warm, tingling aura.
When the light faded, I found myself standing in a desolate, barren landscape. The sky was a sickly greenish-yellow, casting an eerie glow over the cracked, dry ground. The air was thick with the stench of decay and rot, making me gag involuntarily. All around me, the landscape was dotted with skeletal remains and twisted, lifeless trees.
"God… did they just teleport me into a goddamn sewer?" I mumbled, reflexively covering my nose. As I did, A system window popped up in front of me, glowing with a vivid violet hue. It displayed a message in crisp, bold letters
[Welcome to the World of Beginnings]
[Survive, adapt, and ascend the tower. Your journey starts here. Complete quest to leave.]
The message disappeared, leaving me alone in the eerie silence of the Deadlands. I looked around, trying to get my bearings. In the distance, I could see the faint outline of the tower, its peak barely visible through the thick, toxic fog.
As I took my first steps toward the tower, a new system window popped up in front of me, startling me slightly. The transparent screen displayed a quest notification, its text glowing.

After closing the menu, I began walking forward, my footsteps echoing faintly in the stillness of the Deadlands. The ground was uneven and treacherous. I even almost tripped a couple of times, but I pushed on, determined to find… Well, to be honest, I didn't know what I was looking for. The best option I had was to find a place that wasn't so open so that I could practice using my chains.
Not even a minute into my trek, I felt the ground beneath me give way.
"Shit," I uttered as I began to sink rapidly in the ground.
In an instant, I became weightless plummeting into darkness beneath.
"Oh Shit!!!! Fucking Shit!!!!!" I screamed at the top of my lungs praying for wings to pop out my back like they did for other people, but nothing.
The fall seemed to stretch on forever, the walls of the cavern rushing past in a blur. Jagged rocks tore at my bloody hospital gown and skin, each impact sending sharp jolts of pain through my body as I became more and more scratched up.
I tried to brace myself, but the speed of my descent was overwhelming. The air whipped around me, the sound of my rapid breathing mingling with the distant echoes of my fall. Suddenly, I collided with a ledge, the impact jarring my bones and sending me spinning into a new trajectory.
With a sickening thud, I finally landed on the cavern floor. A sharp, excruciating pain shot through my right ankle, and I knew instantly it was broken. The sound of the bones snapping echoed in my ears, the pain radiating up my leg and making me gasp for breath. The agony was nearly unbearable, and for a moment, I could do nothing but lie there, writhing in the dirt and rubble.
"Fuck… Agh." I tried my hardest not to shed a tear from the pain. This was the first time I had ever broken a bone in my 29 years of life, so my painc was at an all-time high, but I had to remember, I didn't know where I was or what was lurking in the shadows. I had to grit my teeth and fight the urge to shout.
As the initial shock began to subside, I forced myself to sit up and take stock of my surroundings.
It took a while for my eyes to adjust, but eventually, they did.
The cavern was immense, its ceiling stretching high above me, lost in shadows. Stalactites hung like teeth from the roof, glistening ominously in the dim light that filtered down from the hole I had fallen through. The walls were rough and uneven, covered in a slick, greenish moss that seemed to pulsate with a faint green.
The floor of the cavern was littered with debris—rocks, decaying body parts of unknown origin, and remnants of what looked like ancient, decayed structures. Pools of stagnant water dotted the landscape, their surfaces reflecting the weak light and casting an otherworldly glow. The air was damp and cold, carrying the metallic tang of blood and erosion.
Through the oppressive silence of the cavern, I heard a faint, distant sound. At first, I thought it was the wind, but as I strained to listen, I realized it was the sound of screaming people, possibly others who had teleported around my general location.
The cries echoed through the cavern, a haunting chorus of torment and despair. They seemed to come from every direction, making it impossible to pinpoint their source.
My heart pounded in my chest as the reality of my situation sank in. I was trapped in this underground hell, my only way out potentially leading deeper into darkness. I glanced down at my swollen, broken foot, the sight of it making me wince. Moving was going to be incredibly painful, but I had no choice.
I took a deep breath, trying to steady my nerves. I tore a strip of fabric from my gown and fashioned a crude splint, which I had never even done before and only seen on online videos in the past to alleviate boredom.
Using nearby sticks and rocks to stabilize my ankle as best I could, every movement sent fresh waves of pain through my leg which told me it was more than just my foot that was broken, but I held it in and pressed on.
After about 10 minutes, I managed to pull myself to my feet.
The cavern stretched out before me, a labyrinth of shadows and echoes. The screams continued, a constant reminder of the dangers lurking in the depths.
With a grim determination, I began to limp forward, each step a painful reminder of my vulnerability. The glow of the moss provided some light, but it was far from adequate. Shadows danced at the edges of my vision, and every sound seemed amplified in the cavernous space.
