Chapter 23 - Chapter 23

As Hiro gazed into the dragon's mouth, the dragon's enormous jaw of the dragon snapped in a macabre and terrifying display, its mouth yawning open like gates of some fiery hellscape. A red glow emanated from within, the flames writhing and undulating like writhing and undulating like the wriggling bodies of the thousands of living serpents.

Fangs, long and razor-sharp, glistened in the dancing light, the dragon's tongue, long and forked, flickering in anticipation of the searing inferno it would soon unleash. As the dragon's mouth continued to gape open, the inferno within reached a crescendo, the heat washing over Hiro like a tangible wave of pure destruction. The fire licked hungrily at the jagged fangs, the teeth glinting like beacons of molten death in the flickering light.

The air in the void seemed to boil with the intensity of the dragon's rage, the entire chamber a crackling, hellish furnace fueled by the beast's primal fury. Fear surged through Hiro like a lightning strike, a primal instinct to survive seizing his body in its grip. With a desperate cry, Hiro raised his arms facing the dragon, a wordless plea for mercy wrung from his soul.

'' Stop!'' he bellowed, his voice trembling with fear and desperation, the sound reverberating through the fiery void. And then to his immense relief, the dragon obeyed. With the suddenness of a bursting storm cloud, the dragon's tensed energy seemed to dissipate, its muscles suddenly became relaxed and a low rumbling sigh escaped its chest along with that was smoke that came out of its nose.

The dragon took a step backward, its claws digging into the nothingness beneath its feet, its form shrinking in stature as it lowered its massive frame to the ground. The flames within its gullet dimmed, the fire subsiding to a smoldering, sullen glow as the dragon stretched out its enormous length, reclining like a powerful tyrant resting upon a throne of darkness.

With an almost imperceptible movement, the dragon began to coil its enormous, the dragon began to coil its enormous body, like a serpent preparing for slumber. Its tail, long and sinuous, snaked around its powerful torso, the scales glinting like jewels in the dim light of the dying flames. With each turn, the dragon grew smaller, its body compressing into an intricate coil knot of muscle and bone, until at last, it lay still, its breath shallow and even. its eyes closed, the fire within its belly extinguished, the dragon slumbered once more.

Hiro, his heart pounding against his ribs, began to take tentative steps toward the sleeping dragon, his fear mounting with each movement. His hands, clammy with sweat, gripped each other for reassurance as he whispered, his voice trembling with anxiety, '' Hello.'' The dragon, its form still and unmoving, offered no response, its breathing slow and even in the weighty silence of the void. Hiro continued his cautious approach, his eyes fixated on the beast's closed eyelids, his mind racing with questions and doubts.

Hiro, his voice quaking with apprehension, continued to speak to the dragon, his words tinged with nervous excitement. '' Your brother, Cryn, told me about you.... about why're in my body,'' he explained, his gaze fixed on the dragon's closed eyelids. At the utterance of his brother's name, the dragon stirred, its eyes snapping open, revealing a depthless, crimson gaze that seemed to pierce the darkness. The creature remained unmoving, its gaze fixed on Hiro's trembling form, its expression inscrutable.

At the sight of the dragon's fiery gaze, Hiro recoiled, his body jerking in a spasm of reflexive fear. His arm shot upwards, a futile shield against the beast's predatory stare, his breath quickening as his feet shuffled backward, the reptilian power of the dragon washing over him in waves. '' He told me about your other brother, the one you've always had to kill every hundred years.''

The dragon, its crimson eyes fixed on Hiro, remained motionless, its power still coiled up. Again, Hiro began to move towards the dragon, With each step, Hiro moved closer to the dragon, his body trembling with a mixture of fear and adrenaline. His voice, weak and uncertain, asked, '' So, why haven't you done the merging yet?''

The dragon, its eyes flickering with a primal, feral intelligence, gave no immediate response, its mind seemingly grappling with some unseen dilemma. Hiro, his heart pounding in his chest, swallowed hard, his gaze darting around the dragon's formidable form. He knew the creature could destroy him with ease, yet something compelled him to continue.

Hiro, the sting of uncertainty clouding his judgment, pressed on with his question, the fear in his voice replaced with a bitter edge of defiance. '' Are you too weak to merge with me?'' he asked his words a challenge to the dragon. '' If  you are the king of all mystical creatures like your brother told me then you shouldn't be weak.'' '' Are you scared of your brother?'' he continued '' Are you scared his power might be greater than yours this time around ?''

The dragon's eyes narrowed, a low rumble of displeasure emanating from its throat, but still did not move. Hiro, his heart racing, pressed on, his voice rising with the intensity of his emotions. Hiro, emboldened by the dragon's silence, pressed on, the word tumbling from his mouth in a torrent of accusations.'' How can you call yourself a King when you hide inside a small boy, afraid to reveal yourself?'' he challenged, his voice trembling with the raw intensity of his emotions. '' You are nothing but a coward, a monster who fears his own shadow.''

The dragon, its body tensed with suppressed rage, let out a guttural roar that shook the very foundations of the void. its eyes blazed with a fury that seemed to scorch the darkness itself. The dragon, its colossal form unfurling from its coiled repose, began to rise with a slow methodical deliberation.  Each segment of its serpentine body, each powerful muscle, tensed with an implacable strength. The dragon's eye, now fixed on Hiro's trembling form, glinted with a predatory hunger, the raging inferno threatening to burst forth in a fiery deluge.

In one sudden, violent movement, the dragon slammed its powerful hind legs onto the void surface, the impact reverberating through the emptiness of the void. The force of the dragon's movement sent tremors through the air, ripples of energy radiating outwards in ever-widening circles. Hiro, his instincts screaming at him to flee, found himself involuntarily drawn towards the dragon, his feet skittering as if pulled by some unseen force.
