Gabriel assumed Eveline would never want to know after what happened back then. But hearing her ask about it made his heart tighten.
It was tough for him to explain because he did not have an answer in particular.
Looking down, he grasped her hand and moved it closer to his lips, kissing it.
"Your death was a major blow for me and I lost the reason to live." His voice trembled as the image of her pale body came into his head. It was distressing that he had difficulty breathing.
Eveline panicked and leaned in to kiss his cheek before nuzzling her nose against his face.
"I couldn't see myself living without you, Eve, so I walked away the very moment when the realization hit that you don't exist."
Her eyes welled up with tears, and her heart was in shambles as she continued to console him with her presence.
"I knew I wouldn't make it without you, so I went to the top of the hospital building.
