Chapter 13 - Chapter 13: The Soul Killer Serpent

Gail exited the room, feeling a sense of calm as Zephyr, his new dog, circled him. The bond with his dog and the guardian's approval bolstered his confidence for the challenges ahead. The path to the sacred temple would test his limits, but he was no longer alone.

Now, Gail had three companions: Zephyr, given to him by the guardian; an amulet obtained by defeating his doppelgänger; and a magical sword. The amulet glowed faintly against his chest, casting a soft light that danced along the walls of the tunnel. The sword, strapped to his side, shimmered with a mystical aura. As he continued along the tunnel path, the system's announcement about Zephyr echoed in his mind. He glanced at the dog, grateful for the companionship. "Looks like we're together, Zephyr," he murmured, and the dog wagged its tail in response, eyes gleaming with loyalty.

The tunnel was long, with stalactites hanging from the ceiling like the teeth of a wild creature. Colorful mushrooms illuminated the way, their bioluminescence casting an eerie, beautiful glow on the rough stone walls. The air was damp and cool, carrying the faint scent of earth and minerals. At a junction, the dog guided him down one of the paths, the sword's pulse had stopped, replaced by Zephyr's guidance. The air grew colder, the tunnel widening into a cavernous space.

Gail felt tired and sleepy, each step growing heavier, but Zephyr's persistent barking encouraged him to keep moving. They reached an open space where the path was blocked by a frozen lake. The ice was a vast, shimmering expanse, reflecting the dim light of the mushrooms like a fractured mirror. Gail saw the continuation of the tunnel on the other side, but they had to cross the icy surface to reach it.

Zephyr stepped onto the ice first, his paws slipping slightly as he moved slowly to show Gail the way. Gail followed, the ice cracking beneath his feet, echoing through the tunnel like thunder. Each step felt precarious, the sound of the ice cracking growing louder and more menacing. He feared the ice breaking beneath him but trusted Zephyr and followed closely.

In the middle of the lake, a sound from the depths beneath the frozen surface caught Gail's attention. He looked down and saw only darkness, a void that seemed to pull at his very soul. Distracted, he slipped, nearly falling, but plunged the sword into the ice to regain his balance. The cold metal bit into the frozen surface, sending a sharp vibration up his arm.

Zephyr barked incessantly as a large crack formed where the sword pierced the ice. A loud noise from the dark depths echoed as if something ancient and powerful had been awakened. The ice began to break, and Gail fell on the ice, the surface fracturing beneath him. Red eyes rose from the lake's dark depths, glowing with malevolent intelligence.

Two-thirds of the ice broke, revealing a terrifying creature with red eyes. A giant, black snake emerged, its scales gleaming like polished obsidian, reflecting the dim light of the bioluminescent mushrooms. Each scale was intricately patterned, shimmering with a dark iridescence that made it seem as if the creature was cloaked in a living shadow. Its eyes burned with a fierce, otherworldly light, glowing a deep crimson that pierced through the darkness like fiery beacons.

The system appeared before Gail:

[Soul Killer Serpent]

[Level: 10]

[This creature kills every human and does not let him reach the temple]

The snake's body was massive, coiled tightly beneath the ice. As it uncoiled, the sheer length and girth of the creature became apparent. It was easily as wide as a tree trunk, and its length seemed to stretch endlessly, vanishing into the dark recesses of the frozen lake. The ice cracked and groaned under the snake's immense weight, sending spider-web fractures across the surface.

The snake's movements were fluid and deadly, each undulation of its body causing the ice to shift and crack further. It moved with a sinuous grace, its body flowing like liquid at midnight. The sound of its scales scraping against the ice was like a whispering hiss, sending chills down Gail's spine. The snake's head, large and triangular, lifted above the surface, its forked tongue flickering out to taste the air.

As the snake raised its head higher, the full menace of its appearance became clear. Its jaws were lined with rows of razor-sharp teeth, each as long as a dagger and glistening with a deadly venom that dripped onto the ice, sizzling and steaming where it touched. The creature's breath was cold and fetid, a mix of decay and ancient power that made the air around it feel heavy and oppressive.

The snake's red eyes locked onto Gail filled with an intelligence that was both ancient and malevolent. It was clear that this was no ordinary serpent, but a creature of pure darkness and malice, awakened from its slumber beneath the ice. Its gaze seemed to penetrate Gail's mind, rooting him to the spot with a primal fear.

Zephyr barked furiously, his hackles raised, but the snake barely acknowledged the small dog. Instead, it focused entirely on Gail, sensing the amulet's power and the sword's magic. The snake let out a low, rumbling hiss that vibrated through the air, a sound that was both a warning and a promise of imminent violence.

The creature lunged at him, its fangs slashing through the air with deadly precision. The attack was swift and brutal, the snake's massive jaws opening wide to reveal rows of gleaming, venomous teeth. Gail barely had time to react, raising his sword just in time to block the strike. The force of the impact sent a shockwave through his arms, the sheer power of the creature's bite threatening to shatter his defenses. Gail skidded backward on the ice, his boots scraping against the slippery surface as he struggled to maintain his footing.

He fought bravely, summoning all his strength and courage. With a determined shout, he lunged forward, swinging his sword in a wide arc aimed at the snake's vulnerable underbelly. The blade clanged against the serpent's scales, sending sparks flying, but barely left a scratch. The snake's hide was tougher than any armor, each scale a shield that deflected his blows with ease. Gail gritted his teeth, his breath coming in ragged gasps, but he refused to give up.

The beast was too powerful, its attacks relentless and unyielding. It struck again and again, its body coiling and uncoiling with a terrifying speed and agility. Each time Gail blocked or dodged, the snake's tail would whip around, striking him with the force of a battering ram. The air was filled with the sounds of their battle: the hissing of the snake, the clang of metal on the scale, and the cracking of the ice beneath their feet.

Gail's arms grew heavy, his muscles screaming in protest with every swing of his sword. Sweat mingled with the icy air, chilling him to the bone. He could feel his strength waning, his movements growing slower and more desperate. The snake sensed his weakening resolve, its red eyes gleaming with triumph. It reared back, preparing for a final, deadly strike.

With a desperate cry, Gail thrust his sword upward, aiming for the creature's head. The snake dodged with a fluid grace, its body twisting out of the way. It retaliated with a vicious snap of its jaws, catching Gail off guard. The fangs grazed his arm, tearing through his sleeve and leaving a searing trail of pain in their wake. Gail cried out, dropping to one knee as he clutched his wounded arm.

The beast loomed over him, its shadow swallowing him in darkness. Its eyes burned with a malevolent intelligence, knowing it had him at its mercy. Gail's vision blurred with pain and exhaustion, the world narrowing to the monstrous visage before him. He tried to raise his sword once more, but his strength was gone. The weapon slipped from his grasp, clattering uselessly to the ice.

At that moment, as the creature prepared to deliver the killing blow, Zephyr intervened. The loyal dog barked furiously, launching himself at the snake with fearless determination. Zephyr's teeth sank into the serpent's thick hide, and although the bite did little damage, it distracted the beast. The snake hissed in irritation, momentarily shifting its focus to the persistent dog.

Gail seized the brief respite, mustering the last of his strength. He grabbed his sword and, with a primal scream, drove it into the creature's eye. The blade pierced the soft tissue, and the snake recoiled in agony, thrashing wildly. Gail was thrown backward by the force of the snake's convulsions, landing hard on the ice.

The creature's pained hisses filled the cavern, echoing off the walls. It thrashed and writhed, its massive body breaking the remaining ice and causing the entire surface to shatter. Gail lay on the ice, wounded and exhausted, watching as the snake retreated into the dark depths from whence it came, its eye bleeding profusely.

As he lay there, unable to move, Zephyr came to his side. The dog grabbed Gail's clothes with his teeth, dragging him toward the tunnel's exit. The dog's determination gave Gail the strength to keep moving, even as the ice continued to crack and shift beneath them.

They reached the other side of the tunnel just as the ice gave way completely, the monster's anguished hisses echoing behind them. Gail collapsed on the stone floor, breathing heavily. He looked at Zephyr, his faithful companion, and managed a weak smile. "Thank you, Zephyr," he whispered, his voice hoarse with exhaustion.

Zephyr barked softly in response, wagging his tail. Despite the harrowing encounter, they had survived, and the path to the sacred temple still lay ahead. Gail knew that the journey would only get more difficult, but with Zephyr by his side, he felt ready to face whatever challenges awaited them.
