Chapter 13 - AN INTELLIGENT SALVATION

Hello, my name is Edgar and today I come to tell you my story. I am a very skilled guy and I've always been interested in electronics and that's why I studied electronic engineering. I really like to assemble and disassemble equipment to see their functions; in this field you could say I'm one of the best, of course, as long as I'm in civilization; later they will understand me

With a few years excelled quite a bit in my school; I was told I had a lot of potential for many things, but I chose electronics. As I told you, I like to see and experiment with electrical devices from a very young age. By the time I was 20 years old, I managed to get a college degree and my family was very happy for me, because, as we are low-income, my parents bet everything on me and, of course, I did not disappoint them.

At the age of 25 I managed to open my electronics company. I worked very hard to be where I am; I never had time for love because I was too busy with my projects to be thinking about it. At the age of 30 I became one of the best electronic engineers and my company rose a lot in the stock market. I was so famous that I was called to give lectures in several companies to their engineers in order to update them and, in one of those trips around the world, the worst happened.

One day, just like any other day, when I was 35 years old, I was on my way to Spain for one of my conferences. We were passing through the open sea in my private plane; by now I was a well-known businessman. When we were halfway to my destination, a big storm came out of nowhere and enveloped my plane with storm clouds. At first I thought it was just turbulence, but I couldn't have been more wrong: the storm became more severe and, little by little, sitting in my seat, I watched as the plane was being destroyed, in fear I just put on my seat belt and, without further ado, I began to pray.

I am not someone so devout, but like all cowardly people, when something strong happens, they just remember God, I am sorry for my hypocrisy, but that's how it is. Back to the story, my plane started to break apart and we were falling rapidly towards the sea. My pilot ran out to tell me something, but the poor guy couldn't because he was sucked out of the cockpit, as one of the walls of the plane broke and I saw how all the stewardesses I had and the pilot flew out.

I was saved because I put on my seat belt, but something in me said I had to look for a parachute, as I knew there was one on this plane. I quickly unbuckled my seat belt and started looking for the blessed parachute, holding on tight. Seconds passed and just as I had the parachute in sight I wanted to get closer, but I saw through the open cockpit door how it was too late and my plane was crashing into the sea.

Everything went dark; I didn't know where I was. For a moment I remembered my whole life; it seemed like I was dying, but I opened my eyes and woke up on a beach. Coughing from the water in my lungs, I managed to pull myself together and slowly got up from the ground. In my mind I thought for a moment that I made it to a beach in a country, but again I was wrong.

When I finished lifting my head, I realized that I was on some kind of island. It was all rainforest in front of me. I looked around and saw that there were pieces of the plane lying all over the place, but the cockpit was gone; most likely the plane was underwater. Running out of options, I decided to grab a knife-shaped piece of metal and walk into the jungle ahead of me. Walking around the island, by the geometries, I realized that it was the size of a big city, of course, with the difference that there was a volcano in the middle of the island. This island was curious, typical island of fantasy stories, but this was not a fantasy, it was my reality. Moving further ahead, I found trees with bananas; I thought this was my salvation, but look how capricious life is: this island was dominated by monkeys and they were very territorial. As soon as they saw me, they started throwing things at me to drive me away. Without further ado, I had to run; I couldn't get near the food.

This was a complete problem; without further ado; I had to find a shelter for the night. In this world of prehistory, a systems engineer like me had nothing to do, but as I never liked to be left behind, I had basic survival skills, so I started to make a fire with dry wood that I found. To my luck, I found a small cave at the foot of the volcano where I could take shelter from the night and the entrance was small, so I could cover it with a piece of wood so that animals would not come in to bother me. This was my first night on this island.

The next day I went looking for food because those animals didn't want to share. The only thing I got were berries and some fruit that was lying on the ground. On this island I heard a roar of a beast; I thought it was a type of feline, I did not know exactly what I was facing. I am not very strong to say the least, as my strength was my brain. I spent days eating small things to survive, but I was not feeling well; the noise of that unknown animal was getting on my nerves and every day I was losing hope more and more.

One more day passed on this island; I was desperate, I didn't know what to do anymore because of the noise and that's when I found it. That annoying beast noise that haunted me every day; was a huge jaguar. It seems that beast was the only one on this big island. Since I arrived I have not moved much from the place where I fell so as not to meet more beasts, so I guess this gigantic animal owned the territory where I was. When I saw it, I quickly hid in the bushes and prayed that this gigantic animal would not find me. The beast passed me by, as it seems that my scent had already merged with nature, but backing away as a typical cliché, I broke a branch and the beast became aware of my presence and I started to run.

Running away from the gigantic animal, dodging its claws, I dodged through the trees so it couldn't grab me. With skill like never before in my life I managed to escape while the monkeys at the top of the trees looked at me and shouted, as if encouraging me, and I came out into the open. I immediately thought of my cave, but I was a bit far from it. I quickly began to climb up part of the volcano to escape from this beast. As I was climbing, I looked back to realize that the animal had come out of the forest and was insistently chasing me. Relentlessly, I began to climb and the beast became aware of my presence and began to climb as well. As it climbed, I threw rocks at it in order to slow it down on its ascent.

In one of those that I was throwing rocks at it, I managed to hit it in the head and the animal slipped and fell, giving me more advantage to escape, but like a demon, the damn beast had not lost interest and continued chasing me this time with more insistence. It was a brutal chase for about 30 minutes. I managed to delay the beast with stones that I dropped on its head and managed to reach the top of the volcano. It was very hot; this volcano was inactive, but inside there was lava; to be more precise, it was calm. I tried to find a shelter to hide in. Already without much energy, I did not know where to run and I was already very tired. I approached the edge of the volcano and looked down and, at that moment, the beast had risen and was walking slowly towards me because the animal knew it had nowhere to run. Resigned, the only thing left for me was death, but I did not want to die at the hands of this animal.

Already without strength in my person, I looked at the bottom of the volcano and decided that it would be better to die at the hands of the volcano and not at the hands of this animal. My mind was filled with negative thoughts of how I, someone great, had managed to be in this situation and I had no choice but to take my own life. Very sad, I backed step by step towards my end; the gigantic animal sensed what I intended and quickened its pace. It quickly lunged towards me, but it was too late; I threw myself backwards towards the volcano with my hands open, as if accepting my fate, already resigned and pained by my miserable fate. The animal did not calculate its jump well; since it was desperate to catch me, it ended up falling with me. For obvious reasons, the animal fell faster due to the weight of its body.

I crashed into some rocks and my few clothes that I had were already shredded from all the time and now they are even more torn from the fall. Because of the movement in the air, the damn jaguar managed to scratch me on my back a little and threw me to the edge of that magma pool below. I didn't fall into the lava thanks to the jaguar, but I got hit and passed out. Before I closed my eyes, I saw how the jaguar plunged into the lava and was burning and moving to get out.

When I opened my eyes, I felt a burning in my leg; it turns out that my foot was covered by some lava that I guess the jaguar had thrown with so much movement trying to get out of the lava. My left leg was gone. You may wonder why I didn't bleed to death; because the wound on my back was superficial and the same lava cauterized my leg wound. Already with little energy, I managed to get out of the mouth of the volcano.

It took me half a day to get to the forest and, being there, I fell to the ground again. I tried to get up, but I could no longer get up. Resigned, I let myself be carried away by death and began to close my eyes. Anyway, I had already decided to die on top of the volcano, but in my mind I remembered everything I had achieved, I thought how my great knowledge had gotten me out of many problems, and I started to get angry because I had gone through so much and this island was not going to finish me. I opened my eyes again, gathered my strength to go on and started walking on all fours, well, 3, shedding a little tears; I prayed for help.

Already thinking that no one was going to help me, I fell back to the ground, but great was my surprise when I saw those same strange monkeys bringing me water in a kind of cup made of plant leaves and some fruit. It seemed that before their eyes I had killed their enemy and they were thanking me. Who knew? That these creatures knew human customs, it seems they had evolved in their own way; I couldn't tell you what kind of island I ended up on.

The next morning, already a little better because my stomach was full thanks to my new friends, I decided to leave this island any way I could. With some wood I made myself an orthopedic leg; it took me a little while to get used to this new leg, but as always I got by with my intellect. The funny thing was that the monkeys themselves were very attentive to my movements and learned what I was doing. I even taught them how to make fire, trying to explain to them how dangerous this stuff was. Apparently they were very intelligent; it seems that this island was lost in time and these monkeys are like relatives of ours who have intelligence. After some time with them, we got along very well and I spent pleasant moments with them; I had already lost track of time, I did not know how long I had been on this island, but I did not care about that.

One night, while I was resting, I remembered my mother when I saw a couple of monkeys with their young, and I thought about how to get off this island and I remembered the cockpit. Maybe it is at the bottom of the sea, I said to myself. Early in the morning I decided to dive into the sea. Of course, I made a different kind of leg out of wood so that I could swim; I made it like an oar so that I could swim well. It makes me laugh just remembering; it must have been days ago. I don't remember it well, but I managed to find the cockpit. Happy, I managed to get some parts out and, after a while, I managed to put together a kind of frequency radio to be able to communicate with anyone passing near this island. Days went by and I was with my monkey friends until a transmission sounded on the radio. It was one of those miracles: one of those seaplanes came by that was trying to cross the ocean. I know it was suspicious, but I had no choice, so I spoke to them and told them my situation. Thank God they spoke English and we were able to communicate.

I jumped for joy and my monkey friends looked at me surprised by my behavior. I quickly went to the beach, but before I left I said goodbye to the monkeys and they wanted to follow me. I managed to talk some sense into them and persuaded them not to follow me, as I had a bad feeling.

When I went out to the beach I saw how that hydroplane, which was a bit big, landed a few meters from the island and a small inflatable boat came to pick me up. In the boat came some very suspicious men with guns; I thought the worst. Climbing into the boat, I looked back and saw how the monkeys were watching me from the top of the trees without being seen by the others who helped me. They quickly raised their hands as if to say goodbye and left. When I arrived at the plane, I was greeted by a man who looked like a mafia boss and I saw out of the corner of my eye that there were packages in the shape of bricks; yes, it was drugs.

I just pretended I didn't see anything and when the man who looked like the boss spoke to me, I got scared, but he was very nice and that surprised me. He asked me if there was anything interesting on the island. I, thinking about the intelligent monkeys, remembered the moments with them and decided not to say anything, because the hand of man only spoils things. Without further ado, they just dropped me off at a port in the U.S. country and dumped me on a dock. Later, I managed with the help of a passing man to communicate with my company and my nightmare was finally over.

It all happened so fast, it was as if I had woken up from a nightmare and stayed completely still in my place. I thanked the man who lent me the phone and then I stayed still for hours until I was picked up. This experience helped me to see my world better. I had been completely dedicated to technology and when it was taken out of my hands I didn't know what to do; I decided that I had to open my knowledge and began to study many more things. I left technology for a while and opened my mind to other things. It turns out that I survived 2 months away and they had given me up for dead. I recovered my things, little by little I managed to spend more time with my family and I got a wife and it has been a while and I am going to have a son and I promise that I will teach him everything to survive in this cruel world called life.

I just have one last message for you: don't focus only on one thing, open your ideas more. Remember that at any moment you may need more than you already know and don't fall into despair when the situation is difficult. I almost died, but luck did not abandon me. You will see that there is always a light at the end of the tunnel and don't forget that you will always receive help from those who least expect it and that has been all from me. Thank you for listening to my story and good luck, survivor.
